Shinobi 3DS

Shinobi has finally ninjad (not an actual word, yet) its way to the Nintendo 3DS. The game is true to its roots, but with all the good comes the bad. The bad being this game is painfully difficult. Here' what we had to say:

"This retro design philosophy also extends to the game’s save system, which is to say there isn’t one. There is an option to save so you can safely turn off the system between play sessions, but it’s a temporary file that is erased when it is loaded again. This wouldn’t be a noticeable issue if the game could be reasonably completed in a single sitting; however, levels are quite long for a handheld game, averaging anywhere between ten and twenty minutes to complete. And that is without taking into account restarting the level when Jiro’s lives inevitably run out. Even the beginner mode, which provides unlimited lives, can seem like an insurmountable feat in the later levels. Shinobi doesn’t play nice with the pick up and play style of gaming that is best suited to handhelds."

Nintendo 3DS Gets A Flame Red Paint Job On September 9

UPDATE: Nintendo has an official statement on the matter. As expected, the Japan announcement applies here in North America as well. "The upcoming Nintendo 3DS system update is in the final stages of internal testing and will be available by December 8. We will make additional announcements about the availability of this system update in the future."

ORIGINAL POST: Nintendo revealed late last month that a planned November update for the 3DS would add some new features and treats, like 3D video recording, photo sharing and new StreetPass game content. With November coming to a close this week, you might be wondering where the promised update is at. Nintendo Japan has an answer for you: it's delayed.

An update on the company's Japanese website reveals that a bit more prep time is needed, but we should be seeing the new firmware arrive "before December 8" (via GameSpot). It's possible that this release timeframe is specific to the Japanese market; we're checking with Nintendo for confirmation.

Metroid 2: The Return Of Samus Coming To Nintendo eShop On Thanksgiving

Here's a quick update for you fans of classic Nintendo games. While the company continues to make good on its promise to release a regular flow of downloadable games to the online eShop, the bulk of the selection so far has left some people wanting. This Thursday's release ought to please a few though: Metroid 2: The Return of Samus.

Nintendo confirms the news in a morning press release, revealing that the Game Boy classic will be coming in its original 2D form. No 3D Classics treatment for this one. The Legend Of Zelda-Themed Nintendo 3DS Is Something You Want

Remember that slick-looking Zelda-themed Nintendo 3DS that popped up earlier this month, the one that was only due for a release in Europe at the time? Yeah... well it's coming here to the US of A as well, Nintendo confirms in a morning press release.

Starting this Thursday, November 24 -- also known as Thanksgiving -- you'll be able to pick up either the Zelda 25th Anniversary 3DS, bundled with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, or a flame red 3DS bundled with Super Mario 3D Land, for the suggested retail price of $199.99 apiece. In either case, the bundles offer a decent savings on a $180 handheld plus a $35 game.

Nintendo 3DS Gets A Flame Red Paint Job On September 9

Nintendo is beginning to get its online gaming act together in recent months, though oddly it's the newly released 3DS handheld that's leading the charge. It's a newer release than the company's Wii and so it's not bound to the same somewhat rigid online infrastructure as the five year old console. Next up for the 3DS? Paid DLC.

Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed the news himself in an interview with AOL Games. "In terms of what the next system update will allow, it will allow developers to sell add-on content, and whether that's for a physical game or a digitally released game," he said.

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword

Nintendo has a lot going on this week. Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword comes out on November 20 -- days away -- and to get you hyped, Nintendo wants to give you the chance to play the game early. But that's not all. The  Big N is also partnering with those gaming wags over at Penny Arcade for a web-comic, as well as attending the L.A. Auto Show to "unveil an exclusive collaboration" with West Coast Customs for a Mario Kart vehicle "that bridges together the iconic video game racing series and one of the most recognized names in the custom automotive industry."

Busy week, right? Details on all three initiatives under the "Read More" tag.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Release Date Set For February 16

Even though this has been detailed already, I'm still not really clear on how Theatrhythm Final Fantasy works. Which is actually pretty typical; have you EVER been clear going in on how a FF game works? The rhythm-based game from Square Enix was announced only a few months ago, and now it has a release date set: February 16, 2012.

The news comes directly from Square (via Andriasang), and since the game is still only confirmed for release in Japan then it's a safe bet that that's the only region the date applies to as well. Here's hoping for a North America confirmation soon; I've reached out to Square for comment, but no word back yet.

Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 and the Nintendo 3DS (and the DS) led US hardware sales for the month of October according to the NPD. Microsoft's console saw a 20% growth from last October and 3DS/DS sales were up 25%. According to Microsoft they sold 393,000 units last month allowing them to continue their reign as the top console in US for 2011.  Nintendo and Sony have not released their specific console numbers for October at this time. Overall October was a good month for hardware sales.

“On an average sales per week basis, October 2011 unit sales of 3DS, DS, PSP, Wii and Xbox 360 platforms all saw an increase over September 2011, which was a 5-week retail month (Oct'11 was a 4-week retail month).”

Is there a new console in your future?

Super Mario 3D Land

The next core Super Mario Bros game to rock your world is Super Mario 3D Land. The title uses the Nintendo 3DS to its fullest. Mario's debut on the 3DS should be owned by anyone with the handheld. Here's why.

"The concept behind Super Mario 3D Land is to take the core gameplay of classic Mario titles (question mark bopping, goomba stomping, coin collecting), but give Mario the ability to travel in three dimensions instead of just two. If this sounds like Super Mario 64 or Super Mario Galaxy, it's not. Super Mario 3D Land is more focused. Instead of sprawling levels with multiple objectives, it's all about getting from the start to the ending flag pole in one piece. There's occasionally some minor exploration when it comes to finding hidden coins, but for the most part it's a point A to point B affair."

Check out all of our Super Mario 3D Land review.

The Legend Of Zelda Hits The Big 80's

This is a big 25th anniversary year for The Legend of Zelda, with a totally new console game, multiple portable re-releases, a concert tour and an oh-so-sweet Zelda-branded Nintendo 3DS. That's probably all we'll see in 2011, but Skyward Sword producer Eiji Aonuma brings good tidings for 2012 and beyond in his recent GamesRadar interview.

In response to a question about whether he'd ever considered looking back at the earliest games in the series, Aonuma called out series creator Shigeru Miyamoto's own recent movements in that direction. "Even Mr. Miyamoto himself has been talking recently about going back to the 2D Zelda games," he revealed.
