Nintendo's Year Of Luigi Brings New Games And DLC

Nintendo is calling 2013 the Year of Luigi, with a number of games lined up that star or feature the green-clad Mario brother. Company boss Satoru Iwata revealed the facts in this morning's installment of Nintendo Direct, speaking a bit on Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon before turning to a lineup of previously unannounced games.

On the 3DS side, two titles are pegged for summer 2013: Mario Golf: World Tour and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. The former is the work of Mario Golf developer Camelot and it seems to be pretty much what you'd expect. Luigi is joined in the game by Mario, Wario, Waluigi, Bowser, Donkey Kong, and likely others. In one course seen during the demonstration, pint-sized golfers compete in a garden that features a giant Goomba.

Killer Is Dead Confirmed For Summer 2013 Release

XSEED issued a press release this morning detailing its 2013 slate, and sure enough, Grasshopper Manufacture's Killer Is Dead is listed among the upcoming titles. Previously confirmed for release in Japan only, we now know for certain that XSEED will publish the game in North America for a summer 2013 release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles.

That's not all for XSEED in 2013, however. Joining Killer Is Dead this summer is the Nintendo 3DS RPG Rune Factory 4. A pair of PlayStation Vita titles will follow in the fall: Valhalla Knights 3 and Ys: Memories of Celceta. Next up, however, is Ys I & II Chronicles, an enhanced remake of the first two games in the series that is set to hit PCs sometime in February.

Nintendo only recently confirmed the 3DS game Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon for a March 24, 2013 release, and now the publisher confirms that the upcoming game will include a multiplayer mode (local and online). A press release reveals that up to four players can work together as they take on paranormal entities in the game's ScareScraper.

Hunter Mode puts each player in control of a different-colored Luigi, with teams working against a timer to hunt down ghosts. Teams can earn various bonuses and upgrades, and they'll eventually face a boss of some kind at the top floor of every 5-, 10-, or 25-floor tower. You can learn more about the mode in the above trailer.

The press release also confirms that the game will be available both on disc and via a download from the Nintendo 3DS eShop, both for $39.99.

LEGO City Undercover Release Dated, Plus More From Nintendo

TT Games' open world crime drama LEGO City Undercover, one of the more highly anticipated Wii U launch window titles, is now officially confirmed for a March 18, 2013 release on Nintendo's latest release calendar. Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon follows a week later on March 24, also the same day that Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity is released for Nintendo 3DS.

That's not all. March 5 sees the 3DS release of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate, which mixes up the traditional 2D side-scrolling of portable and classic Castlevania games with the 3D environments and action of MercurySteam's 2010 console revival. Also coming to the 3DS in 2013 is LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins, a prequel to the March Wii U game that hits stores on April 21.

Hit the jump for the full rundown of upcoming Nintendo platform releases, ripped straight from the announcement.

Mega Man, SMB: The Lost Levels Come To 3DS eShop

It's a good day to be a Nintendo fan, with the latest 3DS eShop update making a pair of bona fide classics easily downloadable. Capcom's original Mega Man game is now available in the eShop, with the subsequent five releases in the series to follow in the coming months. Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels is also new in the 3DS eShop this week. Both games are available for $4.99 apiece.

Elsewhere in the world of Nintendo, Wii U owners can take advantage of an ongoing eShop holiday sale on the new platform. Three downloadable titles -- Little Inferno, Trine 2: Director's Cut, and Chasing Aurora -- are all available at reduced prices; $9.99, $15.99, and $7.49, respectively. For those who'd like to take a break from the new console's disc-based launch titles, this eShop trio is a solid bunch.

Nintendo 3DS XL Bundle Packs In Mario Kart 7

With Thanksgiving conclusion signaling the official start of the holiday season, deals like Nintendo's new 3DS XL "Limited Edition" bundle are starting to emerge. If a 3DS XL is a thing that you want, you can pony up $199.99 and get yourself the portable gaming device along with a pre-loaded copy of Mario Kart 7.

The regular price for a 3DS XL currently sits at $199.99, which means that there's no point in buying JUST the handheld when this bundle also includes the game. The package includes a Blue/Black 3DS XL and Mario Kart 7 comes pre-installed. Not a bad deal at all.

Transformers: Prime is the upcoming third-person action game featuring the Autobots and Decepticons fighting over a meteor made of dark energon. If this sounds familiar, it's because the game takes place during the events of the new Transformers: Prime cartoon. Check out the game's launch trailer below, in which Megatron shows off a new weapon and Team Prime defends against the oncoming onslaught.

New Super Mario Bros. 2

The latest Nintendo Direct video stream brought news of two new DLC packs for New Super Mario Bros. 2, both of which are now available in Japan's 3DS eShop (via Kotaku). Details are sparse at this time, but the two packs are: Gold Mushroom Harvesting Pack (2-of-5 difficulty) and Record Challenge B Pack (3-of-5 difficulty).

This amounts to the second DLC drop for NSMB2, following the three packs that were released earlier in October 2012. The earlier DLC arrived in Japan on October 2 and then in the U.S. on October 4 (with a $2.50 apiece price tag), so you can probably expect a similar release plan for this new content as well.

In Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two, the choice will be yours to decide if you want to use paint to bring things into existence, or thinner to remove things from the world. The concept of paint and thinner is explained in the all new gameplay trailer for Epic Mickey 2 below, which shows Mickey and Oswald using the magical paint brush to access all new areas of the Wasteland, and to bring new characters to life.

Nintendo DS (and 3DS) owners will be shouting "Thundercats, ho!" later this month when Namco Bandai releases Aspect Digital Entertainment's Thundercats DS game on October 30, 2012. Most recently pegged for a September release, a new trailer confirms the October date alongside a few brief flashes of Thundercats doing their thing on the pint-sized DS display.

Reports describe Thundercats as a straightforward brawler in which you play as Lion-O and friends as they take on the evil Mumm-ra's forces. The game is based on the recently launched reboot series rather than the classic cartoon. Let's harbor no illusions here: this isn't going to be a game that shakes the world, but it looks like a fun, fan-pleasing diversion for Thundercats enthusiasts.

Borderlands 2 Detailed -- All New Characters, Guns, and Vehicles

Unsurprisingly, Madden NFL 13 was able to take the top spot as the top selling game of the month, but it was Borderlands 2 number two spot on the list that really caught our eye.

“Borderlands 2, with its bazillion guns-a-blazing, exceeded the first month’s unit sales of the first game which launched in October 2009 by 234%," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. Fifa Soccer 13, New Super Marios Bros. 2, and Guild Wars 2 rounded out the top five.

The bad news is that video game sales continued to slide in September, declining 24 percent year-over-year in September 2012 from $1.11 billion to $848.3 million according to the NPD Group. The number is a bit misleading though, as they only represent new physical retail sales of hardware, software and accessories which only account for about 50 percent of the total amount consumers spend on games.

Had NPD included digital format sales, as well as add-on content downloads including microtransactions, subscriptions, and mobile apps the number would be at about $1.6B, meaning people are still spending just as much money (if not more) on games this year as they were last year, just in different ways.

As for consoles, the Xbox 360 was the highest-selling home console for the month with 270,000 units sold. Nintendo also had a bright month, as the overall sales of the Nintendo 3DS increased 89 percent year-over-year. “Nintendo 3DS XL continues to galvanize our Nintendo 3DS business,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Hardware sales are up, software sales are increasing exponentially and the attach rate is growing stronger every month."
