GDC 2010

Rumor: Portal 2 Announcement During GDC 2010The consensus at this point is that the cryptic images and messages that have surfaced by way of Valve’s brilliantly intricate AGR (augmented reality) Easter egg hunt involving their beloved puzzler Portal point to an official announcement of Portal 2, or even perhaps the long awaited reveal of Half-Life 2: Episode 3 in the near future. Well, that announcement could be coming sooner than we previously thought.

Exhibit the first (and only): one of the pieces of creepy teaser artwork discovered by highly skilled Valve community fiends mentions that GLaDOS, the cake-teasing computer from Portal, has now been upgraded to version 3.11. Interestingly, Valve head Gabe Newell is scheduled to receive the 2010 Game Developers Choice Pioneer Award during GDC next week in San Francisco on...get ready for this...March 11.

Coincidence? Blatant indication that announcements are afoot? Just another reason to pose rhetorical questions? Anything’s possible.

What I do know for sure though is that G4 will have ground troops all over GDC getting the skinny on everything the event has to offer. Like you’d expect anything less.

Valve aren’t the only ones interested in teasing gamers via cryptic images and hidden messages. Take a look at this new teaser image for Deus Ex 3 just released by Eidos Montreal:

New Deus Ex 3 Teaser Image...Teases

Eidos’ posting isn’t entirely clear, but it appears that either there are clues hidden inside the image that sharp-eyed observers will be able to pick out, or Eidos plans to reveal more details about Deus Ex 3 soon. Or it could just be a pretty picture of a lighter.

We're hoping that the "soon" will be next week's GDC, and that a bunch of  details will be revealed. Stay tuned to our GDC 2010 headquarters, and we'll let you know the minute we hear anything.

American McGee Teases Red Riding Hood Game

Developer American McGee has made a career out of taking classic children’s tales and turning them into dark and stylish games. Well, it appears that McGee and his Spicy Horse team plan to add yet another iconic character to their reimagining ranks, which already includes Alice from Alice in Wonderland, and a wide array of characters from the Grimm's Fairytales. And that character is Little Red Riding Hood.

McGee posted a couple pieces of concept art for the game on his Flickr page (via Games Watch), and explained that he’ll be pitching the game, which appears to be called Red, at this year’s Game Developers Conference next week.

"If we’re lucky,” McGee continued, "an interested publisher will help us move it into production. It’s an idea that Ken Wong and I have been toying with for years."

I really dug Alice and Grimm (which actually included a chapter based on Little Red Riding Hood), so I’m obviously pulling for this Red Riding Hood project. I mean, taking an axe to giant wolves’ necks as a kick ass girl on her way to see her grandmother? Um, yes please.

Surreal IGF Finalist Limbo Coming To Xbox Live Arcade This Summer

Yet another Independent Games Festival finalist is headed to Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade. Joining the spastic platformer Super Meat Boy is the absolutely surreal Limbo from PLAYDEAD.

I had a chance to play a good chunk of Limbo as a judge for the IGF and was absolutely floored by what PLAYDEAD has put together. Limbo, which follows the journey of a small and fragile boy as he explores the woods, is one of the creepiest platformers I've ever played. The spiders...shudder.

That's a good thing, by the way.

Limbo and the rest of the IGF finalists will be on display at the Game Developers Conference next week in San Francisco. A number of us from G4 will be attending and covering GDC live.

Japanese School Requires Students To Have a Nintendo DSYou know what I like trafficking in? Rumors! Here comes one now: According to an unnamed "employee at a major international publisher" quoted by VideoGamer.com, Nintendo is getting ready to unveil a new console at this year's  Game Developers Conference.

Here's what the source told the site: "Just heard a rumor that you may be interested in: Nintendo are going to announce a new platform at GDC. Some devs have already started work on it."

No word on whether this is a handheld or a console, or a wearable 3D apparatus like the Virtual Boy, although the source said he/she is sure that the platform exists, he/she is less sure of the GDC launch.

I give this rumor a 30 percent chance of being true, but that will not stop me from telling you about it. I'm just that kind of guy... besides, if there really is some new Nintendo doo-wacky at GDC, I'll be all, "Told you so, sucka."

In fact, I'm going to take the rumor-mongering further! By reporting this: According to my entirely imaginary source, Nintendo's new console is called the "Nintendo Breeze" and it's an apparatus that allows "smell-based" gaming. It also delivers automatic, soothing blasts of Nitrous Oxide during relevant game sections. See picture below.
