Hybrid's New Quirky Sci-Fi Squad Gameplay

5th Cell changed the way we thought about DS games with Scribblenauts, and now they're attempting to make you think differently about squad-based combat games with Hybrid. Here's a snippet from our Hybrid preview:

Hybrid takes the current cover-hiding trend in an entirely new direction. In Hybrid, it’s not just bad tactics to rush in and fire while exposed and running in circles, it’s impossible.  You don’t pilot your avatar from cover-to-cover, instead you play the game by choosing which cover spot to hide behind, do your shooting business there, and then jump to the next concrete barrier or other safe zone. In other words, Real soldiers don’t circle-strafe.

Does that sound like your type of game? If so, head on over to our Hybrid preview for more details on the upcoming Xbox 360, PC title.

Our Hands-On Impressions Of Dead Space 2 DLC

Dead Space 2 DLC "Severed" continues the story of Dead Space 2. You won't be playing as everyone's favorite engineer Isaac Clarke, though. You'll play as Dead Space: Extraction's protagonist Gabe Weller. Before you dive in to more Dead Space, check out our hands-on preview of Severed.

"Part survival horror, part run-and-gun action, the highly polished gameplay in Dead Space 2 remains fresh enough still that innovation isn’t a necessity, though there’s some of that on offer anyway in the sequel’s multiplayer mode. However, Severed is all about adding to the single-player experience, with two new campaign chapters starring Dead Space: Extraction protagonist, Gabe Weller."

Dead Space 2 DLC Severed will be released on March 1.

Mass Effect 2

Mass Effect 2's upcoming DLC will be called Arrival. ME fans who recently downloaded an update to the PS3 version of the game noticed trophy listings for an upcoming DLC pack called "Arrival." The pack is expected to be the final piece of DLC designed to bridge the gap between Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3.  One of the trophies, "Covert Action," mentions Dr. Amanda Kenson who was also mentioned in a Cerberus news update:

Historians and astronomers alike are abuzz tonight over a new paper published by Dr. Amanda Kenson of the University of Arcturus ... "Only a small fraction of the mass effect relays date back 50,000 years," she writes, "The majority are far older, indicating they were created by a species predating even the Protheans." ... What civilization could have spanned the galaxy for not thousands, but millions of years? If this were the case, we should have found mountains of evidence of their passing. Where is this species now?"

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood is getting a new batch of DLC. Leonardo da Vinci has always been by Ezio's side; his inventions helped the plight of the assassins in both AC: 2 and AC: Brotherhood. When we last left Leonardo at the end of Brotherhood he was safe and free from the Borgia influence. In the next DLC he appears to have been kidnapped. We're not sure yet where this DLC will take place chronologically though.

Left 4 Dead 2

The next Left 4 Dead 2 DLC pack will be created by the community. The creator of the popular L4D map "2 Evil Eyes," Matthew Lourdelet, has been working on a community campaign called Cold Stream. Valve was impressed with his progress on Cold Stream and approached him about including it in the an upcoming DLC pack. Instead of helping Lourdelet finish the map Valve has asked the community to help: "We want you the community to be part of the process of taking his unfinished campaign and releasing it as DLC on the Xbox 360, PC and Mac."

Black Ops: First Strike DLC Review -- Is This Call of Duty Map Pack Worth It?

Treyarch are up at bat again with the first DLC released for Black Ops in this First Strike DLC review. Coattail riders. Second fiddles. Copycats. Johnny come lately. The folks at Treyarch have been called a lot of names since they starting working on the Call of Duty series, but with Call of Duty: Black Ops, they proved that they aren't just second banana by stepping up to the plate and delivering a solid game that takes the franchise in new directions while giving gamers what they want.
The First Strike map pack (which drops first on the Xbox 360 and then a a later date on the PS3 and PC) provides players with four new multiplayer maps and a new zombie encounter, all wrapped up in a package for 1200 MS Points, or $15 in real world dollars. But is it worth it? That's the same price as the recent Battlefield: Vietnam DLC pack, which provided weapons and vehicles in addition to new maps. With First Strike, you just have four new maps and the Ascension zombie map/experience, so at first glance it seems like you're getting less content for the same price, which is already at the top of what gamers seem to be comfortable paying. So it is worth it?

The Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam map pack was released last week, and inquiring minds are wondering if it is worth picking up. At $15 for this piece of DLC, that’s a sizeable investment for four new maps (with a fifth on the way), 15 new era-specific weapons along with six vehicles popularized by the unpopular war. Is it worth it? Hardened Battlefield vets will give you an immediate “yes.” But if you’re a casual Battlefielder, you might want to pass on Vietnam.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam Launch Trailer »

Vietnam is a multiplayer-only map pack and weapons upgrade for the game, which brings along six new vehicles, including the iconic Huey helicopter. The new weapons range from a flamethrower to the chattering AK-47 to the ever-popular “Thumper” grenade launch, and the entire piece of DLC is basically a Vietnam “skin” that you’re applying to your standard multiplayer. Besides giving you new toys to play with, it’s not changing the BFBC2 that you’re used to at all.
As with most multiplayer games, new maps are always a welcome addition.
