PlayStation Move

There are so many things to be impressed by when you talking about Media Molecule’s recently/sadly delayed sequel LittleBigPlanet 2. Like, for instance, the fact that the developers accidentally stumbled across the idea of using the game’s new music sequencer to build entire levels. Or that the developers built LBP2 using just LittleBigPlanet. Oh, and the fact that instead of limiting yourself to levels, you can now create fully realized games of all genres and styles. You know. No big deal.

To fill the adorable hole in our hearts left by the game’s delay, we present our latest Epictober-fied look at LBP2 straight from the mouths of the folks behind one of our most anticipated games of next year.

Everyone’s favorite fake executive is back, and this time Sony’s VP of Family Showdowns, aka Kevin Butler, shows off the PlayStation Move’s ability to bring families together…or threaten to drive them apart, especially when a game like Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 rolls around. As explained over at the Official PlayStation Blog, the latest Butler ad was inspired by how Tiger Woods’ father trained him to deal with distractions on the course by rattling change in his pocket. Obviously, simple pocket change just won’t cut it when Butler is around, and the Macguire household, where Butler has been living for the past few weeks, is all the stronger for it.

Golf games seem like a natural fit on the Wii or the PlayStation Move, but will John Daly's Prostroke Golf unseat the raining champion of golf games, Tiger Woods, simply by virtue of a motion controller?

"The Move seems fairly well integrated into the overall experience in as much as we never felt sufficient frustration to swap out for a standard controller. That said, the game itself urges you to posture and swing as you would a normal golf club, but the lack of real heft and weight more often than not will make your shots go astray as you flail into your follow-through. Mostly, we found ourselves flicking the controller with our wrists, filling up the powerbar in line with our chosen club and the distance to the hole, and then releasing in a quick, almost lazy motion."

Wave down your caddie, tee up and check out our John Daly's Prostroke Golf preview.

LittleBigPlanet 2 Delayed Into January 2011

UPDATED 11:51 AM PST: SCEA PR just confirmed to me that LBP2’s new release date is January 18, 2011.

LittleBigPlanet 2, Media Molecule’s uber-ambitious and creativity extravaganza of a sequel, will sadly not be released this year, and will instead hit shelves sometime in January 2011, the developer confirmed today. I’m already making a LBP level where Sackboy has to navigate through my broken heart.

Any fan of Dead Space will no doubt have had a moment where they simply wanted to disembowel a Necromorph and hack away their limbs....in real life. Fortunately, the new Move-enabled port of the successful Wii title will allow gamers to come as close to that experience as reality will allow.

"The limited edition of Dead Space 2 for the PS3 will include last year's Wii-only title Dead Space Extraction, fully optimized and upgraded for the PlayStation 3. That means HD, Trophy support, and the works. But if you don't want to pony up for that set, because you can also download it separate on the PlayStation Store. Either way, you're probably wondering, "Is it worth it?" Sony unveiled the Move controls for the game at the Tokyo Game Show, and we got to take a look. Read on to find out if you want to pick up the Dead Space Extraction experience."

Grab your plasma cutter and read on for our Dead Space Extraction Move preview.

Virtua Tennis 4

Virtua Tennis 4 takes SEGA’s long-running ball-and-net franchise into the third-dimension and adds PlayStation Move support in order to create the most immersive tennis experience around. John Teti had a chance to try out the teched-out title at Tokyo Game Show 2010, but it wasn’t the 3D or motion controls that caught his eye:

Virtua Tennis 4 has its share of flashy, box-cover-friendly features. Its support for the PlayStation Move makes VT4 the series’ first foray into motion control, and it also has the bullet point du jour, 3-D graphics support. But it’s a less whiz-bang change—a new, dynamic camera angle—that makes all the difference in this sequel, which marks the return of Sega’s original Virtua Tennis team.

Check out our full Virtua Tennis 4 hands-on preview to find out more.

 The PlayStation Move

Today, the much anticipated PlayStation Move is on store shelves, along with 30 games that use the technology.

Sony's innovative motion control system promises accurate, one-to-one (or close) control of games using only a wand shaped controller and your own movements. It's like a science fiction movie come to life... okay, it's not really like that, but you get the idea.

If you're on the fence about your decision to purchase one of these gizmos for your PlayStation 3, we have a wealth of Move related opinion and analysis, right below the cut.

It’s been a while—too long, by his own admission—since Suda 51, the charming and eccentric head of No More Heroes developer Grasshopper Manufacture, has had a new game to enthusiastically discuss. This unfortunate cycle was broken during this year’s Gamescom 2010 when Suda-san and company announced the downloadable shooter Sine Mora, which Grasshopper is collaborating on with Digital Reality.

When I spoke with Suda-san shortly after the Gamescom reveal, he was unable to share any details about a then unannounced title he was working on with EA. However, this mystery was solved yesterday when the blood soaked, action/horror title Shadows of the Damned was officially unveiled during the Tokyo Game Show. Our own Abbie Heppe sat down with Suda-san himself to find out more about the new project, and to find out why everyone should own a pair of golden sneakers.

TGS 2010: Shadows of the Damned - Suda 51 Interview »

When I spoke with Suda-san last month, Shadows of the Damned was still under wraps, so we instead spent most of our time talking about Sine Mora, what it means to be part of a true collaborative process, why the downloadable space is a perfect fit for his sensibilities, and why 3D might end up making games too overwhelming an experience for their own good.

Heavy Rain PlayStation Move Patch Coming September 22

Heavy Rain, Quantic Dream’s skillfully crafted psychological thriller that redefined how gamers everywhere feel about the name Jason, was originally intended to have motion controls, but the developers weren’t able to make that happen. However, thanks to the PlayStation Move, and a new patch being released on September 22, David Cage’s vision for the game will finally be realized.

Kevin Butler, faux Sony VP and consistent tickler of the funny bone, is currently in full-on PlayStation Move mode (see viking ad). In his latest ad, Butler demonstrates the bringing-togetherness of Sony’s upcoming motion controller. If that means sticking around a stranger’s home far beyond his welcome, then so be it. Butler only follows one person’s rules: Butler’s.
