Xbox 720 Ad Spotted In Real Steel Trailer

It's been over 5 days since we've posted any unconfirmed rumors and/or speculation on the next-generation of consoles, so this morning I've got some rumors on both the Xbox 720 (unconfirmed name) and the PlayStation 4 (unconfirmed name.)  Here's the skinny:

  • Develop reports that "multiple across the industry" say that a 2013 E3 reveal for the Xbox 720 is in the cards. Supposedly, the system will be shown off at E3 (hopefully without Circe du Solei), and the device will hit stores either during the holidays of 2013 or early into 2014.  Until then, Microsoft will focus on the 360 and the Kinect.Supposedly, Lionhead is making a Fable launch title, and there's talk that Rare is working on a mature next-gen Xbox game.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

According to the NPD analysis firm, Deus Ex: Human Revolution was the top selling video game in August despite being in the market for just five days before the end of the August reporting period. The firm expects that Madden NFL 12 will take the top spot for September. Not only that, but they blame the bulk of losuy software sales in August on the fact that Madden was released in the September reporting period instead of August's this year.

NPD Analyst Anita Frazier also mentioned that sales of NCAA Football '12 were better this month which could be an "an indication of Madden fans looking to get their football fix elsewhere due to the delay in the release of that title.”

Here are the top ten selling games in August:

Software (New physical retail only, across all platforms including PC)

  1. Deus Ex: Human Revolution (360, PS3, PC)** Square Enix Inc
  2. NCAA Football 12 (360, PS3) Electronic Arts
  3. Call of Duty: Black Ops (360, PS3, NDS, Wii, PC)** Activision Blizzard
  4. Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd (NDS, Wii, PS3) Disney Interactive Studios
  5. Cars 2 (NDS, Wii, 360, PS3, PC) Disney Interactive Studios
  6. Just Dance Summer Party (Wii) Ubisoft
  7. Just Dance 2 (Wii) Ubisoft
  8. Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game (Wii, 360, NDS, PS3, 3DS, PSP, PC) Disney Interactive Studios
  9. The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS) Nintendo
  10. Zumba Fitness: Join the Party (Wii, 360, PS3) Majesco

**(includes CE, GOTY editions, bundles, etc. but not those bundled with hardware)

I think it's funny that Cars 2 is still in the top 10. What do you think of the NPD August 2011 results? Were you one of the people who picked up Deus Ex this month, or any of the other games?

While Adam may have caught the most recent mutation of the nerd flu (this time with added sinus infection), he spent some quality time at home with his television. One of the highlights of this period of sickness was Resistance 3. After years of working on the PS3, Insomniac seems to have refined their controls to the point where the awkwardness of the Dualshock 3 seems to have disappeared. Not only that, but the game is tons of fun, full of amazing weapons, has incredible art, and features a dark and mature story line. In other words, The Sess enjoyed it. Let him tell you for himself in this week's Soapbox.

Ninja Gaidan 3 To Support PlayStation MoveNinja Gaiden 3 will support full PlayStation Move compatibility. Team NINJA and Tecmo Koei made the announcement today at Gamescom 2011. The PSMove will be the first motion control peripheral compatible with a Ninja Gaiden game.

I'm not a huge fan of motion controls but I am a fan of the Ninja Gaiden games. They consistently offer a challenging and creative way to chop, slash, dice and obliterate your enemies. Using my arms and my imaginary katana to kill baddies is bound to be rewarding.

Ninja Gaiden 3 will be released in early 2012 for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

QuakeCon started off with a brand-new Rage trailer, showing off some new details of the game. Then the pony-tailed and country music star-resembling Todd Hollenshead came out to welcome the audience and kick things off. "How's that for a welcome to QuakeCon? What do you think?" To which the crowd thundered their approval through applause.

Todd was quick to thank partner AT&T, who is bringing five times more bandwidth to the Bring Your Own Computer room. This brought some of the loudest applause of the evening, and only at QuakeCon would a crowd break into raucous clapping for a bandwidth announcement. Hollenshead then detailed the massive sales that usually accompany this four day event, which includes 50% off all id iOS games, and a massive Steam sale that culminates in a huge QuakeCon Pack that offers all released id and Bethesda games for $69.99.

Then it was time to bring out the star of the evening, id's John Carmack. Now, before you get too excited, I'm going to burst your bubble right here: he doesn't say anything about Doom 4. He sort of hints about it by saying "We cannot take eight years next time to make our next game. We need to figure out how to do these amazing things faster. Maybe we shouldn't have been quite so ambitious with Rage. Maybe we should have spent some time doing the other things that we know how to do really well." Head on for the full video of the keynote, along with the highlights.

Sony

I'm not organizing a canned food drive for the top executives at Sony quite yet, but recent events -- the earthquakes in Japan, the hacking of the PlayStation Network -- have hit Sony so hard that even the company's top men are feeling the effects. Sony chairman Howard Stringer's pay fell 15 percent last year, and executive deputy president Kazuo Hirai's compensation dropped from 110 million yen in the prior period to "only" 101 million yen (excluding stock options).

Stringer earned 345 million yen ($4.3 million USD) for the year ending March 31; in the same period last year, Stringer earned 408 million yen, according to Sony's filings with the Japanese government.

Sonic's 20th Anniversary Video »

A fast-spinning ball of 16-bit blue, whizzing around, and sometimes well beyond the boundaries of, the screen is the first thing a lot of us remember seeing of Sonic. The Sega Genesis mascot created by Yuji Naka and Naoto Oshima stood proud as a rival to Nintendo's brick-breaking plumber Mario in 1991 when Sonic the Hedgehog was released. He was there to challenge the NES superstar, but he offered a very different sort of experience. He could run faster and jump farther, all with a single button to Mario's two. Why get excited about sometimes shooting fireballs from your hands when you could run really, really fast, always.

Sonic turns 20 today, the anniversary of the original game's June 23, 1991 release for Sega's Mega Drive/Genesis console. More than 40 games have followed it, spanning a variety of genres and gameplay styles. Sega celebrates that legacy this year with the coming release of Sonic Generations, but it's the fans who are responsible for breathing life into the iconic video game character again and again. Read on for more about everyone's favorite little blue furball.

Child of Eden

Everyone here at G4 who's played the game loves Child of Eden. The Rez-like action and amazing visuals earned the game a 5 star rating, but sadly, PlayStation 3 gamers have been left behind by the so-far 360-exclusive. But know hope, PS3-heads; the game's developer, Q Entertainment, is working hard on the PS3 version, and promises it will be more than worth the delay. The word comes by way of Q producer James Mielke on the 8-4 Podcast. Mielke says the company has a team of 30 people working on the PlayStation 3 version of Child of Eden, and it's all being developed in-house.

When asked what, specifically, we can expect from a PS3 Child of Eden, Mielke said, "There's nothing I can really say about it, except that it will definitely be worth the couple months that people have to wait for the PS3 version to get finished. People with PS3s, people with nice TVs, people with all kinds of control options...it's going to be really cool."
