Sony CEO Kaz Hirai Says Core Gamers Should Be Served Before The Mainstream

According to a report from Nikkei, Kazuo Hirai is about to be named the President of Sony. Howard Stinger would continue to act as CEO and Chairman. Rumor has it Hirai will take over as soon as this April. Hirai is currently the Executive Deputy President.

I assume Kaz (we're on a first syllable basis) is so psyched about his promotion he's going to gift everyone a copy of Ridge Racer. That joke is still funny, right?

Playstation Move vs Microsoft Kinect: The Future of Motion Control

The concept of motion control has been embedded in every gamer’s mind since the first person jerked an NES controller in a desperate bid to keep Mario out of a pit. From there, various companies tried (and failed) to create a viable motion controlled game/system. It wasn’t until Nintendo released the Wii in 2006 that the industry finally realized there was a juicy new opportunity still ripening on the vine.

Only years old, the Wii’s influence has reshaped the face of the industry. What some see as a bubble—a fad at best—still resonates through the daily workings of video games. New motion controlled games promising to push the limits of the medium are announced with regularity. But just how far can it stretch? Will people continue to patronize games that make them get off their couch and dance around or will these games remain party favors?

Xbox 720 Ad Spotted In Real Steel Trailer

It's been over 5 days since we've posted any unconfirmed rumors and/or speculation on the next-generation of consoles, so this morning I've got some rumors on both the Xbox 720 (unconfirmed name) and the PlayStation 4 (unconfirmed name.)  Here's the skinny:

  • Develop reports that "multiple across the industry" say that a 2013 E3 reveal for the Xbox 720 is in the cards. Supposedly, the system will be shown off at E3 (hopefully without Circe du Solei), and the device will hit stores either during the holidays of 2013 or early into 2014.  Until then, Microsoft will focus on the 360 and the Kinect.Supposedly, Lionhead is making a Fable launch title, and there's talk that Rare is working on a mature next-gen Xbox game.

i feel like the kinect has such opportunity for real games but they decide to stick with the "family games" for it. why not use a controller, for instance, a gun like the sharpshooter for the ps3, and make it for 360 fps games.. have a joystick on your right thumb to look around as well as one on the left thumb for moving. if you could make this for the kinect it would be wayyy better then the sharpshooter, and they could make more money

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

According to the NPD analysis firm, Deus Ex: Human Revolution was the top selling video game in August despite being in the market for just five days before the end of the August reporting period. The firm expects that Madden NFL 12 will take the top spot for September. Not only that, but they blame the bulk of losuy software sales in August on the fact that Madden was released in the September reporting period instead of August's this year.

NPD Analyst Anita Frazier also mentioned that sales of NCAA Football '12 were better this month which could be an "an indication of Madden fans looking to get their football fix elsewhere due to the delay in the release of that title.”

Here are the top ten selling games in August:

Software (New physical retail only, across all platforms including PC)

  1. Deus Ex: Human Revolution (360, PS3, PC)** Square Enix Inc
  2. NCAA Football 12 (360, PS3) Electronic Arts
  3. Call of Duty: Black Ops (360, PS3, NDS, Wii, PC)** Activision Blizzard
  4. Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd (NDS, Wii, PS3) Disney Interactive Studios
  5. Cars 2 (NDS, Wii, 360, PS3, PC) Disney Interactive Studios
  6. Just Dance Summer Party (Wii) Ubisoft
  7. Just Dance 2 (Wii) Ubisoft
  8. Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game (Wii, 360, NDS, PS3, 3DS, PSP, PC) Disney Interactive Studios
  9. The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS) Nintendo
  10. Zumba Fitness: Join the Party (Wii, 360, PS3) Majesco

**(includes CE, GOTY editions, bundles, etc. but not those bundled with hardware)

I think it's funny that Cars 2 is still in the top 10. What do you think of the NPD August 2011 results? Were you one of the people who picked up Deus Ex this month, or any of the other games?

I mean top selling game in August isn't that big of an achivement. It was the only anticipated game coming out for that month.

Now let's see who will have the top selling game for the year!!

I just got a $829.99 iPad2 for only $103.37 and my mom got a $1499.99 HDTV for only $251.92, they are both coming with USPS tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prices at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37" HDTV to my boss for $600 that I only paid $78.24 for. I use GetCent.com

While Adam may have caught the most recent mutation of the nerd flu (this time with added sinus infection), he spent some quality time at home with his television. One of the highlights of this period of sickness was Resistance 3. After years of working on the PS3, Insomniac seems to have refined their controls to the point where the awkwardness of the Dualshock 3 seems to have disappeared. Not only that, but the game is tons of fun, full of amazing weapons, has incredible art, and features a dark and mature story line. In other words, The Sess enjoyed it. Let him tell you for himself in this week's Soapbox.

Yeah, Adam, be sure to tell Morgan that her downgrading the PSN in her review of this game was really necessary. Especially considering that she didn't even try it for the review, but still had to mention live being so much better. It turns out that every review I read says MP in Resistance 3 is either good or great. Hmmmmm. Morgan should go play WoW and leave the real game reviewing to you brother!

On second thought, just tell Morgan that she sucks!!
