Morning Hangover #71 -- Andrew Looks For Feedback, Patrick Has TV Envy

Join the Feedback crew next Wednesday as we welcome special industry guest Jesse Divnich! Jesse spends his days as vice-president at Electronic Entertainment Design and Research, thinking about the future and analyzing video game trends. At night, we imagine he plays a fair share of video games as well. He'll be our guest in-studio as we speculate and prognosticate on the industry. Want to chip in? You can!

Ask us questions about the past, present and future of gaming, and we'll pose them to Jesse. Want to know if motion gaming is a fad or here to stay? We'll put it to him. Need the info on possible future hardware releases? He's your guy. Wondering about what the PlayStation Network outage might mean long-term for Sony? That's a softball. Kingdom Hearts 3 release date? He's probably not going to be able to field that one.

We'll think up some more questions, in addition to those, but we want your queries as well. This is Feedback after all, where we want to put you in the picture. Just hit us in the comments below, and look for your question to be read on-air next week!

It isn’t often that the games industry is rocked by two massive news stories in a week, but that’s precisely what went down over the past few days, and, boy, has it been a whirlwind. Not only are millions and millions of PlayStation 3 owners scrambling to ensure their identities aren’t stolen in the wake of last week’s attack on the PlayStation Network, but gamers everywhere are speculating furiously about what Nintendo’s newly confirmed Wii successor might be now that we know it’s going to be playable at E3 2011. Oh, and there just happens to be a little thing called the Gears of War 3 multiplayer beta that a whole mess o’ folks are playing at the moment, so that’s on the discussion agenda as well.

It’s a full show, and to guide you through it all is your host Adam Sessler and our illustrious panel: Stephen Johnson, Michael Leffler, and Nikole Zivalich. Enjoy!

Analysis: August 2009 Hardware Sales -- Price Cuts Help, But Wii Still On Top

According to industry analysts at the NPD Group, videogame software sales were down 16 percent in March 2011, compared to March 2010's sales. Overall, the industry made $735.4 million through software sales in March, compared to $875.7MM in March 2010. These numbers represent physical sales of new software, not digital format sales.

"New physical retail software sales declined significantly," the NPD Group said today in a statement. "Software sales last year were marked by several marquee titles including Final Fantasy XIII, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and God of War III, which were all million plus unit sellers in March 2010."

LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game

Avast ye, landlubber. Hear now a salty tale of golden doubloons, Davey Jones' locker and multi-colored plastic bricks! Arr! Lego: Pirates of the Caribbean preview, ahoy! Here there be an early look at this video game, from our favorite Pirate-ess, Nikole Zivalich:

"The core gameplay mechanics from any LEGO game are still there. Gamers will be rewarded for exploring, there are plenty of items to collect, and the drop-in drop-out local co-op returns as well. What makes this game stand out is the Pirate cannon the developers were allowed to work with. There was a lot of effort into making it feel "piratey” with audio and ambiance."

WWE All-Stars: Who Got Left Off The Roster?

THQ's WWE All-Stars pits the pro wrestling greats of today against the WWE and WWF legends of the past. With only fifteen roster slots available for classic superstars, a number of wrestlers who made a big impact on WWF/WWE history aren't in the game.

Some of these might appear as future downloadable content, and in fact the Honky Tonk Man was on this list before he was announced as DLC earlier this week. But until that happens here are some of the most notable omissions from WWE All-Stars.

WWE All-Stars: Who Got Left Off The Roster?RIC FLAIR

Ric Flair built his legacy as the greatest wrestler of all time in the NWA and WCW, but he had a successful World Championship run in the WWF in the early 1990s and was a WWE fixture throughout the 2000s. The Dirtiest Player in the Game is one of the most beloved and iconic figures in wrestling and would easily be on the roster if he wasn't under contract with the wrestling group TNA.

Fans To Choose Cover Athlete For Madden 12

The cover athlete on the next Madden game, Madden NFL 12, will be chosen by fans. Beginning today and continuing through April 27, fans can participate in a bracket-style voting campaign on on ESPN's site. You'll choose among 32 candidates (one from every NFL team). Fans’ votes will determine which NFL players advance through the seeded bracket, culminating in the reveal of the Madden NFL 12 cover athlete on ESPN’s “SportsNation” on April 27.

“Whether it be from fans, media, agents, or even the players themselves, there’s never a shortage of opinions when it comes to the annual selection of the Madden NFL cover athlete,” said Anthony Stevenson, Senior Product Manager of EA Sports. “So this year we’re handing the keys over to the public."

LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game

What happens when Pirates of the Caribbean meets LEGO? Well, besides LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game. You get swashbuckling blocks and a lot of attention to detail. But what does the search for a plastic Black Pearl look like? Apparently, not like plain old plastic bricks. But don't take my word for it. Check out what Nikole Zivalich had to say when she checked the game out at GDC.

"At first glance, LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean looks like a LEGO game; it's colorful, it's bouncy, and everything is made of LEGOS. But after my glance turned into a stare, I noticed the jungle I was in had textures, leaves, vines, none of which were made of LEGOS. What surprised me wasn't simply the detailed landscape, it was how detailed it was. Another level I was shown took place on a pirate ship, but rather than being on a shiny, plastic Black Pearl, I was on a rotted wood, lines in the planks, realistic looking pirate ship."

Best of the Rest

Patapon 3

The third Patapon game, Patapon 3, will be available on the PlayStation Portable on April 12. The game will cost a very manageable 20 bucks, and features a new warrior, a Superhero Patapon. Patapon 3 also offers co-op quests, and  head-to-head four-against-four battle against other Patapon clans with network play.

This will be available on both the PlayStation Network and as a UMD, but I'd buy it on the PSN -- the next-gen PSP won't support UMD.

Sony's Peter Dille Concerned About Rampant PlayStation Portable Piracy (PSPP?)

Sony announced this morning that the company is cutting the price of the PlayStation Portable. Beginning on February 27, the PSP will cost $129.99. That's down 40 bucks from the current price, a significant cut, I think you will agree.

"The PSP system set the standard for complete portable entertainment and continues to be the premiere destination for gamers on-the-go,” said SCEA’s Tim Bende in a statement. “Nearly six years after its initial launch, demand for the PSP remains strong. This new price point enables us to broaden the PSP platform to a larger group of consumers who are looking for best-in-class handheld entertainment.”

G4 Is Heading To GDC 2011!

Hey, Feed faithful! This year’s Game Developers Conference is just around the corner, and we here at G4 are in the final planning stages as we prepare to bring you all of the breaking news, interviews, previews, panel discussions, rumors and videos your precious game-loving brains can handle straight from one of the year's biggest gatherings in the games industry.

GDC 2011 officially kicks off Monday, February 28 and lasts through March 4, and G4tv.com will be all over it like some kind of incurable developer conference fungus, only…you know…not as gross. We’re expecting to see plenty of big name titles at the show, from Battlefield 3 to The Darkness 2 to, perhaps, the new game from Epic Games that was previously rumored to be announced at the show. In other words, lots of good stuff.

In addition to the countless number of fascinating panels and roundtables, another big highlight will obviously be the keynote presentation from Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, in which he may or may not announce that Wii Points have become the official currency of the universe. It’s more likely that he’ll stick to the keynote topic, “Video Games Turn 25: A Historical Perspective and Vision for the Future,” but we’ll see.

So keep your eyes and ears glued to G4tv.com starting next week for all of the latest updates from this year’s big show.
