War is Games: From the Civil War to the Iraq War and Beyond Memorial Day

Memorial Day. What does that mean? Well, to the typical America, it means beer, bikinis, and a day off from work! And if you're a gamer, it also means double experience in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Or even TRIPLE experience if you're diving into the recently updated Gears of War 2 experience. What better way to honor the valiant dead than earning tons of XP?

But in all seriousness, or as serious as we can be at G4, Memorial Day is a holiday that was enacted to honor to fallen soldiers in the American Civil War. Originally meant only for Union soldiers, it was later expanded to the Confederate soldiers as well, and the holiday currently honors all men and women who have died in military service. So besides a day off from the daily grind, take a moment to show some respect for the men and women who have died in service to our country.

After that, spend some time in one of these war game experiences, highlighting all of the major U.S. military conflicts since the Civil War ... and beyond.

The Road to E3 2011: Sony Report Card

During an investor call in Japan late last night, Sony confirmed they are working on a "future platform." Although few hard details were revealed about the platofrm, this is the first official mention from Sony of these plans.

When discussing an increase in research and development costs over the last quarter, Sony’s VP and CFO Masaru Kato said:

"For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business, so for the future platform – when we’ll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that – but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there.”

Kato said whatever Sony is working on will have a different kind of launch than the PS3. The losses they have suffered on the PlayStation 3 had to do with the price of semiconductors versus retail prices. Sony has since created its own semiconductor facilities, and this mean it is "no longer thinkable to have a huge initial financial investment like that of the PS3," according to Kato.

The Road to E3 2011: Sony Report Card

It seems like such a long time ago, but at E3 2010 Sony was looking good. The publisher will certainly have the most interesting – and difficult – transition to this year’s expo. With the massive leak of private user information and the shutdown of the PlayStation Network last month, things are looking hazy for the future of the brand, but one thing is for certain – the company will have to execute the best E3 showing of all time in order to recover.

Enough about the future, let’s now look back to the past – and see just how Sony fared at last year’s show.

PSN Password Reset Exploit Discovered; Web-Based Sign-In Services Taken Offline

UPDATED 11:25am PST: Sony's Patrick Seybold just posted the following update on the official PlaStation Blog:

"We temporarily took down the PSN and Qriocity password reset page. Contrary to some reports, there was no hack involved. In the process of resetting of passwords there was a URL exploit that we have subsequently fixed. Consumers who haven’t reset their passwords for PSN are still encouraged to do so directly on their PS3. Otherwise, they can continue to do so via the website as soon as we bring that site back up."

Original story follows:

Sony’s PlayStation Network has once again been compromised after an exploit was discovered in the newly launched password reset system that was recently brought online as part of Sony’s PSN relaunch.

According to Eurogamer, cyber attackers were able to use this exploit to change user passwords and potentially compromise user accounts. In order to do so, hackers would need to know a user’s E-mail address and date of birth, which would normally be a bit of a stumbling block, but as millions of PSN users are intimately aware, these pieces of information were among those that were stolen during the historic PSN attack that took place last month.

To prevent further damage, Sony has pulled the plug on PSN sign-in portals across its various websites, including PlayStation.com and Qriocity.com, however, as Sony told Eurogamer, “In the meantime you will still be able to sign into PSN via your PlayStation 3 and PSP devices to connect to game services and view Trophy/Friends information.”

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier

During Ubisoft's Q4 financial call the company revealed that Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier has been delayed until sometime between January and March 2012. It's probably for the best as the holiday will be over populated with other AAA shooters like Battlefield 3 and the alleged new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 title. Nevertheless, we've been waiting to play Future Soldier for quite a while now so this news is a bit disheartening. What do you think about the delay?
