Epic Games Wows With Stunning iPhone Tech Demo App Epic Citadel

To generate a bit more buzz for Chair Entertainment’s newly announced iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch exclusive “Project Sword,” Epic Games has released a free tech demo called Epic Citadel. The Unreal Engine 3 powered app, the world's first in fact, lets users wander through a gorgeously rendered medieval town filled to the brim with remarkable detail--birds chirping as they circle above, yellowing leaves blowing in the wind, sweeping vistas of the cliff-side kingdom, the glaring sun peeking through fluttering flags, etc.

What's even more remarkable is that the app was built in just eight weeks by a small team of Epic developers. Most impressive. Here’s little walkthrough video we put together for those of you can’t check out the impressive demo first-hand:

We spend so much time talking about the video games and movies of Comic-Con 2010, we sometimes forget about the damn comics.

Don't make that mistake. Comics these days are among the most interesting, cool and innovative things out. For instance, check out the video below for new series The Devil Inside, an action horror comic strip from Todd Stashwick that you can see for free online, right now. Now is the time to check it out, so you can be like, "I was reading that before anyone."

Yoot Saito's The Tower Heading To iPad?

Filed under "Bizarre Yet Fun" video games comes SimTower from the early 90s. It was a game that let you simulate the exciting world of constructiing a skyscaper! Thrill to the enjoyment of building a skylobby! Marvel at the way the trash is removed daily! And watch teeny people turn red with anger as they wait forever for an elevator. Gripping gameplay.

Admittedly, I played this game obsessively. A bunch of people must have done the same thing, because it spawned a sequel called Yoot Tower (after designer Yoot Saito who later went on to develop Seaman for the Dreamcast) a few years later, and that game had a sequel of its own. Besides Mac and PC, It was also on the Game Boy Advance as The Tower SP, and even the Nintendo DS as The Tower DS.

According to TouchArcade, it looks like the game is heading to the iPad as well. Which is one more reason to buy Apple's addictive little fingerprint magnet. This game is highly enjoyable, if strange, and a touch version makes a lot of sense. Not to Yoot his own horn, but try this out of it gets released. You'll curse me later.

By now you all probably know that everyone in our office can't wait to get the new iPhone 4. While some of you may disagree, you can't deny the place Apple products have taken in the world of gaming. Sure we all love Peggle and Plants vs. Zombies, but are these really games in the purest sense of the word? Such is the subject of this week's Soapbox. After Adam explains his stress levels, he digs into why he thinks an iPhone or iPad game is a different animal from a console or PC game you sit down and play for extended periods of time. What do you think?

Burning MoneyIn order to "prompt discussion of whether to recommend policy changes to support the ongoing reinvention of journalism," the Federal Trade Commission is proposing a tax on consumer electronics. If passed, the proposal would add 5 percent to the cost of iPads, game systems and other devices. The money would presumably be used to subsidize paper-based sources of information.

Yeah, that should prompt a discussion... a discussion that begins with "What??!"
