GamesCom 2009

Final Fantasy fans have been bitching for quite a while that they got stiffed on a demo of Final Fantasy XIII with the US Blu-ray : release of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete, but we’ve just received news that may calm the masses. Today while we saw the ridiculously amazing new Final Fantasy XIII demo, we had to ask XIII Producer Yoshinori Kitase whether or not the US audience would finally see a demo.

GamesCom 2009: US Final Fantasy XIII Demo Most Likely Coming

G4: So is there still a chance the Final Fantasy XIII demo will ever see the light of day here in the US?

Yoshinori Kitase: We haven't really confirmed anything yet, but we'd like to provide something in downloadable form for players overseas.

G4: Are you sick of people asking for it?

Kitase: (laughs) No, I'm happy to hear it.

As Kitase told us in our interview, the localized US version of the title is approximately 70% complete. Could Square-Enix deliver a little downloadable gift before the holidays? We'd sure trade a Chocobo for it!

Our full Final Fantasy XIII interview will hit G4tv.com next week...

During our GamesCom Lost Planet 2 interview with Capcom’s Jun Takeuchi, we slipped in a few Resident Evil questions. Considering his involvement with Resident Evil 5, we asked him a number of questions about that game as well. But when asked whether or not he would be involved in the development process for Resident Evil 6, we we’re quite taken back by his answer.

GamesCom 2009: Who Will Produce Resident Evil 6?

G4: Are you on the next Resident Evil title?

Jun Takeuchi: (laughs) There are probably three candidates and they’ve been playing blackjack for a long time to pick the role of producer for the next one. But they haven’t decided yet. They have me doing something else. Go, or something like that. Blackjack wasn’t working.

TheFeed: Nightcap - Episode 4 - GamesCom 2009 »

We're coming up on the final day of coverage for GamesCom 2009 in Cologne, Germany, and what better way to wrap things up than with a special edition of TheFeed: Nightcap?

Filmed in the fabulous Düx restaurant in the Hotel Dorint, mere paces away from the convention center, Billy and myself are joined by 1UP.com executive producer and Best Friend Forever Garnett Lee for a recap of our favorite things from the show.

If I were to put said things in the form of an unordered list, it might look a little something like this:

  • Sony's press conference, Minis, the PS3 redesign/price drop, and the can't-stop-raving-about-it Heavy Rain
  • I have been quickly and easily suckered in by Peter Molyneux's Fable III presentation. I just pre-ordered a dozen copies! 9 for me, the rest for all of my friends!
  • Three Americans rave about a soccer game
  • Hands-on impressions of Star Wars: The Old Republic, which really should come in a box labeled "KOTORs 3 Through 7"
  • Liver sausage, blood sausage, and other varieties of German meat

Also, we're back in Americaland next week with a new show and a brand new name. And with that, check out the show now formerly known as TheFeed: Nightcap from Germany -- to call it a sausage party would not be too far from the truth!

Or, even more conveniently, you can click right here:

What's that? You don't use iTunes? Haha, you're so weird! But that's okay, because we have XML links for you RSS fiends.

Aliens Vs. Predator GamesCom 2009 Preview

We've seen the Predator. We've seen the marines. At GamesCom 2009, however, Sega and Rebellion finally pulled back the veil on what it'll be like to play as an Alien in the upcoming Aliens vs. Predator, coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. I sat down with Sega to check out the Alien in action, live from Germany.

"Playing as the Alien could be disorienting, especially in regards to knowing which way was down. In the new AvP, Johnny Alien (name completely unofficial) has a reticule in his field of view. Though our human scientists have yet to fully understand this life form, having an aiming reticule in its field of view is probably unrealistic. But it's completely helpful, as its T-shape is always showing you which way is down, and it glows a bit when centered over a surface that you can leap to."

For more, check out my complete look at Aliens vs. Predator.

No Mandatory Installation For Uncharted 2

Naughty Dog's action-adventure sequel Uncharted 2: Among Thieves promises to deliver one hell of a cinematic gaming experience. In fact, the latest trailer had me reaching for a tissue, and I'm not at all ashamed of it.

Anyway, G4tv.com's own Andrew Pfister attended a behind-closed-doors presentation over at GamesCom, and he was kind enough to send back his impressions of the very intriguing sequence demoed therein. Here’s a taste:

“In a Resident Evil-type "how did these people ever move from room to room?" situation, Drake leapt, climbed, swung, and fell through a series of obstacles ranging from the standard cliff walls (with conveniently located hand-holds), to a trio of giant bells (also with similar hand-holds), then a series of large gears that elevated and lowered Drake to his next challenge. Also, it contained my personal favorite, the pair of switches that must be pulled at the same time.”

Snake has plenty of company in Konami's upcoming PSP game, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Here's the long-running 9 minute trailer from GamesCom 2009 for your enjoyment.

Heavy Rain Voiced In 13 Languages

Updated: 10:36PM PST - 8/24/2009

It seems like every other day or so some bit of fascinating news comes out about Quantic Dream’s thriller Heavy Rain, and each time it happens I get more and more excited about the game. Well, the latest news is more on the “Well, that’s certainly impressive” side as opposed to the “Oh dear lord! I musts haves its now!” side, but it’s still worth mentioning.

During a presentation during GamesCom, Quantic Dream founder David Cage revealed that the game’s voice work isn’t only impressive, but plentiful. In fact, as Joystiq reports, the game will include 13 voiced languages, and will be subtitled in five more. So far, the following languages have been confirmed: English, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Russian, and French.

I'm currently waiting to receive confirmation on the remaining languages, so I’ll update if/when I hear something.

What language are you most looking forward to using in the game?

Update: So I just heard back from Quantic Dream, and here's what's up. Turns out that the game will be fully localized (audio and text) in 10 languages (English, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese, Russian, Polish, and French), with Japanese being available only for the Japanese territory.

The game will also include text-only in the following six languages: Chinese, Korean, Swedish, Danish, Finnish and Norwegian.

GameStop Says The PlayStation 3 Slim Is Shipping Early: August 25!

At Sony's GamesCom 2009 press conference, the company thrilled gamers and changed the playing field with the $299 PlayStation 3 Slim. It also said that the new PS3 model would be available in September. According to GameStop, that's not the case. The retailer currently lists a shipping date of August 25, 2009 for the new console.

This is great news for those that want to get their hands on the Sony's svelte system as soon as possible. For me, it makes August terribly interesting; if the ship date is accurate, I can't wait to see what August's NPD numbers are like.

Do you think the PS3 Slim is shipping early? Or is it a simple error on GameStop's site?

Hideo Kojima Shows Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker »

I know there are a lot of Metal Gear Solid fans in the house and I know some of you aren't interested in watching the entire Konami press conference. You're in luck! Here's a clip of Hideo Kojima's portion of the presser, covering Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

In addition to revealing more info on the game and showing off a new trailer, Kojima showed great potential as a stand-up comedian. Laugh as he speaks German, makes sausage and beer jokes, talks about playing Metal Gear Solid on the toilet, and more! It's a great clip that MGS fans do not want to miss.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 GamesCom 2009 Interview »

Executive producer Karl-Magnus Troedsson talks about Battlefield: Bad Company 2 in this GamesCom 2009 interview. He discusses the game's different vehicles, the awesome destruction, engine improvements, the crazy stat counting, gameplay specialization, game modes, and more. He said:
"There are a lot of different things when it comes to the squad play and team play that we're bringing in -- like context-sensitive orders and these kinds of things. We really want to encourage people to play together as a squad."

Check out the interview and let me know what you think about the game. Also, I have a sneaking suspicion that Troedsson is the descendant of a certain Nordic god. Agree? Disagree? \

Mass Effect 2 GamesCom 2009 Interview »

Dr. Ray Muzyka -- general manager and SVP of Electronic Arts, CEO of BioWare, and one of the coolest cats I've ever met in the business -- chatted with G4tv.com about the highly anticipated Mass Effect 2. Dr. Musical Muzyka said:

"This is a dark second act. It's a brutal second act in the Mass Effect trilogy. It's more of a dark feel than the original Mass Effect."
While lots of these details are great, I'm sure you all want to know if you get to boink an alien in the game. Find out by watching the entire interview!

Konami GamesCom 2009 Press Conference »

UPDATE: The video has now been added for your viewing pleasure.

Jam packed in a room a quarter the size of the other GamesCom press conferences, Konami is hosting its annual press conference. With people standing on top of people who are standing on top of people who are sitting – the place is packed. And they’re not here hoping for a Rock Revolution sequel announcement, either. Word has obviously made it out there would be news coming for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and Pro Evolution 2010.

As the lights dim, a sizzle reel starts spinning. Titled “Konami is Legendary,” the trailer rolls through different emotions Konami games provide. But more importantly, the video rips through clips of upcoming or recently released Konami titles such as Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Pro Evolution Soccer 2010, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Saw, Karaoke Revolution, Yu-Gi -Oh!, and more.

The Saboteur GamesCom 2009 Interview »

Pandemic lead designer Tom French spills oodles of details on The Saboteur. He talks about the game's various weapons, the different things you can blow up, and the numerous locales in the game. One of the most interesting parts of the interview is when French talks about the lead character:

"We really put a lot of work into our character. We wanted to make an Indiana Jones for our game -- an iconic character. He's a little bit of Indiana Jones, a little bit of Bruce Willis from Die Hard, and a little bit of Steve McQueen. He's really relatable. He's funny. He's tough. He smokes. He drinks. He's got a way with women. For us, he's that action hero we always wanted to be."
Be sure to check out the full interview and leave a comment with your thoughts on the game.
