Mass Effect 2 GamesCom 2009 Trailer »

If you've been yearning for a new BioWare RPG, pretty soon you might be overwhelmed with possibilities, as BioWare revealed at Electronic Arts' GamesCom press conference that Mass Effect 2 will be releasing "just a few months" after Dragon Age: Origins drops in early November. It's a slightly more specific release date than "early 2010," as EA has been previously telling everyone.

GamesCom also set the stage for a new character reveal: Grunt, described as a "blood-hungry" Krogan who has "never faced true defeat" and could prove a valuable asset for Commander Shepard, but only if he can be "tamed." Discovering who you can trust seems a central theme this time.

BioWare promises more character reveals leading up to the release of Mass Effect 2.

Rumors are rumors no more. Timed to the kicking off of Gamescom in Germany, MTV Games and Harmonix have officially confirmed nearly the entire setlist for The Beatles: Rock Band. All told, 44 of the 45 tracks from the fab four are now public knowledge, with the final track remaining a secret for some reason. With the game's release not far off, however, we'll know soon enough.

The nigh entire setlist for The Beatles: Rock Band is as follows.

PS3 Price Cut

More PlayStation 3 price-cut madness! The evidence comes via a catalog photo comes from a Kotaku reader who works at retail chain FYE.  Check out the photo above: It offers an 80GB PlayStation 3 for $300, and a 160GB system that includes Uncharted for $400. That's a cool hundred bucks off each system.

This is not a sale, either. It's a "new low price" while supplies last.

"Wait, Steve," I'll bet you're thinking,"What happens when the supplies run out??" Everybody on the internet thinks that when the supplies run out, you'll be playing on a PlayStation 3 Slim. Of course Sony is not talking about it, but the conventional wisdom says Sony will announce the PlayStation 3 slim at GamesCom 2009 this week... and when/if that happens, we'll let you know with ultimate quickness.

So, what do you think? Is it going to happen? Are Sony sales going to be vaulted into the the console stratosphere? What do you think the price-point for the PS3 Slim will be (if it happens?) How big will the HD be? Or it will it a hard-drive-less system?

Wow, jet lag is a treat! Well, the G4tv.com crew has finally landed in Cologne, Germany, and we’ve got our press badges, and we’re patiently waiting to get things going. We’re calling today Day 0 because the main GamesCom floors have yet to open, and outside of getting yelled at for accidentally going where we weren’t supposed to go (oops!) we’re prepping for the day’s events.

GamesCom 2009: It Begins

Day 0 coverage will include the EA Press Conference and the Sony Press Conference. The EA press conference begins at 4:30pm Germany time, and the Microsoft Press Conference begins at 6:30pm. We’ll have breakout reports from each of the press conferences, and we’ll be trickling video out as fast as we can kick it out.

What surprises these conferences will hold are still unknown. Both EA and Sony generally go pretty big from these shows – since they’re both loved quite a bit in Europe – so we're guessing there should be some fun announcements.

Stay tuned for heaps of coverage from GamesCom 2009! Or as they say here in Germany, “Da ist ein Unfall passiert. Da war eine laute Explosion. Es war nicht mein Fehler. Sie müssen zur Polizei gehen.”

Emma Goldman

If you've been checking Lionhead software's site over the past couple of days, you've no doubt noticed that the company has been featuring a different revolutionary a day. First, it was hipster-favorite Che Guevara, then O.G. French Revolutionary Maximilien Robespierre, now it's Emma Goldman, famous American anarchist and suspected co-conspirator in the assassination of President McKinley.

Each new political rabble-rouser is accompanied by a quote summing up their philosophy and an opportunity to vote them a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down. Emma's quote reads: "If I can't dance, I don't want to be in your revolution."

What does it all mean? I don't know. But on Wednesday, it just might become a lot clearer. Lionhead's Peter Molyneux tweeted the following this morning:

"Tmw is a talk to students then Wednesday it's my talk. Where I will tell more of what the website means."

I'm guessing Lionhead is going to announce a new game at GamesCom in Germany... but, judging from the revolutionary imagery, Molyneux may be announcing that he's channeling Lionhead's resources into overthrowing the United Nations!

Leaked Document Reveals Unannounced PlayStation 3 Product: Real Or Fake?

PlayStation Lifestyle has received a document that reveals details on Sony's GamesCom 2009 press conference. The document was supposedly leaked by someone working on the show. Outlining the presentation to be delivered by SCEI CEO Kaz Hirai and SCEE president Andrew House, the list contains the following tidbits:

"2 x PlayStation 3 TOOL

1 x PlayStation 3 (Unannounced Product / Discretion advised by Client)

2 x PSPGo!

1 x White

1 x Black

2 x PlayStation EYE Camera (NOTE: Is not a Video Camera for recording Presentation, no fee required)"

The juiciest item on the list is the unannounced PlayStation 3 product. Sony is rumored to be announcing a slim version of the PlayStation 3 at the show, as well as a price cut. This adds fuel to the fiery rumor...or not. Gamers that fancy a slim PS3 should note that "unannounced product" doesn't necessarily mean a new PS3; it could simply mean a new bundle. More importantly, the document has listed the date incorrectly, so its authenticity should be questioned.

What do you think of this "leaked document"? Is it legit? Or is it a Photoshop prank?

Sony Focusing on PS3 Profits and Not Market ShareAs you are probably well aware, the Germany-based trade show GamesCom is next week, and while there’s sure to be tons of news coming out of the show, the thing I’m probably most excited about is finally being able to stop speculating about the existence of Sony’s PlayStation 3 Slim. All signs point to at least an announcement regarding the elusive console, which means no more posts about blurry camera-phone pics or grainy, unconfirmed shots from random factories. It’s going to be great. Sadly though, this will all have to wait until Sony’s press conference next week.

See, several retailers in Japan are experiencing a rather bizarre PS3 shortage at the moment, as Kotaku reports. It isn’t clear exactly how many stores have run out of consoles, but evidently it’s happened to enough to raise a few eyebrows. It’s also worth noting that last week, a note was leaked from a 7-11 in Japan that indicated that the 80GB PS3 was to be discontinued as of August 9th, suggesting perhaps a little cleaning house on Sony’s part, most likely in preparation for the PS3 Slim launch rumored to be happening soon.

So there you go, a little last minute PS3 Slim speculation to remind you what you'll be missing out on once Sony (hopefully) puts this whole thing to rest in Germany next week.

Anyone here going to miss speculating about the PS3 Slim? I mean, it's going to be like losing a family member who you hate and wish never existed, no?

 PS3 Slim

The rumors of the PS3 Slim continue to swirl like the Sea of Sargasso (see Sub-Mariner)! This time around, Hong Kong magazine Gamewave has claimed that the new model will be announced at next week's GamesCom convenion in Cologne, Germany. The magazine also said that a price cut will be announced. Examiner.com has translated an article from the magazine and concluded:

"GameWave, a Hong Kong gaming magazine, is reporting that the long-rumored Playstation 3 Slim will finally be revealed at the Gamescom convention held in Cologne, Germany from August 19th to the 23rd. The publication has been known for leaking several news stories before.

Sony will be holding a three hour press event starting on 9:00 AM PST the day before Gamescom. Presumably, they will announce the new Playstation 3 model and drop the price of the system to $299.99 during that time."

There have been a few rumors about the PS3 Slim appearing at GamesCom and this adds more fuel to the fire. Sony has had problems containing its secrets (see E3 2009), so it wouldn't be surprising if the announcement happens next week. However, there's a chance that these rumors are just playing on gamers' wishful thinking that a PS3 price cut is on the way. With Microsoft rumored to be cutting Xbox 360 prices again, Sony might not have a choice this time around.

What do you think of these PS3 Slim rumors? Would you pick one up? How about the price cut rumors? If you haven't purchased a PS3, will a price cut make you buy one?

360 Price Cut

I love writing about rumors of console price-drops, especially when the rumors seem credible. Today's secret info: The Xbox Elite is coming down in price by $100, and the 360 Pro is being phased out altogether. The source: Kotaku  posted a photo scanned from the Meijer catalog due on August 30, and it clearly lists a $299 price tag for a 120GB Elite under the words "new, lower price!"

As for the Pro model going away, I say good riddance: This would essentially mean the end of the infamous Red Ring of Death; we could finally end our long national nightmare. (Mini-Update: According to our commenters -- and my co-workers! --  the Elites still sometimes Red Ring... but not in the numbers that the initial RRoD outbreak produced.)

I'm putting a call in to Microsoft, and if I hear anything back, I'll let you know... but don't count on more than a "no comment."  Expect the price-drop to be announced by Microsoft, not confirmed to the press. As for the timing of the announcement: Well, if this is on the up-and-up, it's got to be before that catalog drops on the 30th, so I'm expecting an announcement at Gamescon in Germany late next week

My question is: Will Microsoft's price-cut announcement be competing with Sony's expected announcement of the PlayStation 3 Slim? Rumors are flying about that announcement too. It looks like a classic console price-cut showdown might be brewing for Leipzig; I call it The Ruckus in the Rhineland. Of course G4tv.com will be there in force, breaking news and breaking skulls in Germany. Keep your browser tuned to G4 for all the details during the German game show--I'm talking previews, interviews, videos, news, and more.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom

Capcom has revealed its lineup for the upcoming GamesCom convention in Cologne, Germany. This year's mix includes Lost Planet 2, Monster Hunter Tri, MotoGP 09/10, Spyborgs, Dark Void, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom Ultimate All-Stars, and Resident Evil 5 for the PC.

I'm guessing most of you won't be able to join us in Cologne for some hofbrau madness (as well as these games). Are there any particular titles you'd like the gang to focus on? Which of these games are you looking forward to the most?
