Morning Hangover

Road to E3 2011: The Microsoft Report Card

I know what I and the rest of the G4 crew will be doing during E3 -- covering the hell out of it, bringing you previews, interviews, revelations, trailers, and more -- but my question for you is: What are you most excited about at this year's show? Any games standing out? Any hoped-for announcements? Oh, and If any of you guys are going to the show, don't forget to stop by G4's area and say "hey!"

Keep your browser on G4tv.com, and your TV on G4 during E3. That's June 7-9, people. Mark your calendars.

Morning Hangover: The Choice Is Yours -- L.A. Noire or The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings?

Today is probably the biggest day for game releases in May, so let's get right to it so you can get back to gaming: did you pick up L.A. Noire or The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings today? L.A. Noire is the intense detective drama from videogame developer giant Rockstar and The Witcher 2 from CD Projekt is an expansive role playing game for the PC that promises to offer over 30 hours of glorious fantasy gameplay. I'm not so into crime fighting and traffic desks so I'll be going for The Witcher 2, but our entire office is head over heels for L.A. Noire. Which one (if any) are you going to pick up and which system are you getting L.A. Noire for if that's your game of choice for the week?

Mortal Kombat Hands-On Preview

This weekend I was hard at "work" covering PDP's Mortal Kombat tournament in Las Vegas. Hopefully you were able to catch our stream of the awesome event (and if you did tell me what you thought!) and we'll have more coverage from it later on. But in the midst of watching Scorpion and Smoke kicking some butt, did you get your hands on any games this weekend? Brink, perhaps? Let me know what you spent your weekend playing. I hope it was fun!

Morning Hangover: Videogame Crossovers

I stumbled across this picture on Reddit today of Lady Gaga drawn in a Super Street Fighter 4 style from artist Patrick Warren and it got me thinking: what would be a cool videogame crossover? Who from real life would I want to throw in to a videogame, and which game would I want to put them in to? It's tough to think of a good one but after much deliberation I'd probably take Bear Grylls and put him in Left 4 Dead because he can handle pretty much every situation and probably wouldn't be too afraid of zombies. What about you? Who would you put in a game and which game would it be?

I saw this video yesterday from the new massively multiplayer role playing game from ArenaNet Guild Wars 2 featuring the city of Lion's Arch and my jaw dropped. I seriously cannot wait to jump into this world and roam around for hours, talk to all of the NPCs and take in every little drop of the environement that I possibly can. Wow.

That's one of the very best things about videogames, being able to immerse yourself in something so different from everyday life. So my question for you today is: which videogame has the best setting? Where would you want to spend a long time getting lost and exploring? It doesn't have to be a game that's out already, as I've chosen Guild Wars 2. I have to say that American McGee's Alice: Madness Returns might be my second choice.

Ubisoft Announces PSN, XBLA Title Outland

Yesterday we put up a review of the extremely stylized game Outland and recently we've all been salivating at screenshots and gameplay previews from L.A. Noire, probably the most realistic game we've ever seen due to the facial recognition integration and replication of famous Los Angeles landmarks. Some developers say that they choose stylized graphics to make their games seem timeless, but gamers oftentimes criticize stylization regardless of how much effort is put in to the game (see World of Warcraft), so my hypothetical question for you today is: which do you prefer, stylized or realistic graphics? Let's pretend that regardless of your choice a game would play the same, that way you can't use the "I don't care about graphics, just gameplay" response.

Diablo 3 BlizzCon 2010 Screens And Artwork Are Classy

Many videogames on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and especially the PC use beta testing to allow players to get an early look at titles and to help developers find unforseen bugs. Whenever a beta announcement goes out there always seem to be two sides: those who are very excited to test out an early version of the game versus those who couldn't care less and only want the finished product. Releasing beta tests to the public, especially open betas where anyone can play, usually confirms that the game is close to completion and usually I find them quite fun to participate in. What about you? Do you love beta testing, or do you prefer to wait until the games actually launch? What was the last beta you participated in?

In the next few weeks quite a few AAA titles are going to be hitting for all platforms: Brink, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, and L.A. Noire. We'll have tons of awesome features surrounding those titles coming soon, but in the wake of their release, have you been playing anything new? Let me know which games you spent your weekend playing. As for me, I was stuck moving this weekend and didn't have any internet (the horror!), so I read Game of Thrones.

Videogame soundtracks are often overlooked, but when you think about it, they really add so much character to just about every game. For every masterpiece of a title, there's usually an equally amazing soundtrack backing it up. Just think about some of your favorite videogames of all time, I bet they all had gorgeous soundtracks to go along with them. So, let's hear some of your favorite videogame soundtracks, or maybe even just your favorite song from a videogame. I'd have to say my favorite would probably be Chrono Cross' soundtrack, especially the song Time's Scar. It's so good. Take a listen below and then share you favorite videogame soundtrack or song.

The Morning Hangover: Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone! Got your margaritas and sombreros out? Cinco de Mayo is of course the day that we celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Mexicans. Let's start the day off right by listing off some our favorite videogame characters of Mexican descent. We've got...

  • Abraham Reyes from Red Dead Redemption
  • El Fuerte from Street Fighter 4
  • El Stingray from Saturday Night Slam Masters
  • King from Tekken
  • El Blaze from Virtua Fighter 5
  • Manny Calavera from Grim Fandango
  • Rico from Killzone 2
  • Montezuma from Civilization

So now that we've got a few characters to celebrate with, what are your Cinco de Mayo plans? Are you going to go out and celebrate or stay in and play some games?

The Morning Hangover: It's National Bird DayHappy Bird Day everyone! Bird Day was established in Oil City, Pennsylvania and it is of course the day that we celebrate all of our wing-flapping friends. It's a day where birdwatchers can come together and study, adopt new birds, and participate in other bird related activities. We here at G4 wanted to commemorate Bird Day in our own way, with a list of our favorite videogame birds. Here's who we came up with:

  • Angry Birds from Angry Birds
  • Delibird from Pokemon
  • King DeeDeeDee from Kirby
  • Kazooie from Banjo Kazooie
  • Squawks from Donkey Kong
  • Kaepora Gaebora from Zelda (the annoying owl)
  • Falco from Starfox
  • The Ostriches from Joust
  • Chocobos from Final Fantasy
  • Birdo

Okay, we know Birdo isn't actually a bird but come on. How often is it that you get a day named after yourself? We had to include him/her/it as an honorable mention. So there are our favorite birds, let us know who yours is. I know of atleast four more from Donkey Kong alone.

Yesterday ATLUS revealed their preorder bonus and collector's edition memorabilia for their new puzzle thriller Catherine. What was in that bundle? Boxer shorts and a pizza box, among other random and hilarious things. More and more often games are coming with intersting bonuses to get you to preorder; Portal 2 came with multiplayer bot skins, L.A. Noire comes with a free "The Naked City" case, Duke Nukem Forever pre-orders get a hat, the list goes on and on. What I want to know is, do you guys like these pre-order bonuses? What do you think of them, and if you don't like them, what do you wish that you got instead?

Portal ARG Puzzle Hints At Half-Life 2:Episode 3

I'm not going to lie, I get really angry when it comes to playing videogames. This weekend, I threw an Xbox 360 controller into a wall and almost broke a mouse after I slammed it into my computer desk after I died in Half-Life 2: Episode 1. I've got anger issues! I've definitely broken a steelseries headset, almost half a dozen  gaming mice, countless keyboards, and I'm sure if I played more console games I'd have quite a bit of destroyed hardware there as well. It's not that I'm terrible at games, it's just that I hate losing more than anything. What about you? Do you take your gaming anger issues out on your controllers, walls, televisions, or whatever else you might seem fit to throw, or do you just take a deep breath and not take it so seriously?

Morning Hangover: Videogame Fashion -- Best Dressed Character?

The Royal Wedding between Britain's Prince William and Kate Middleton was this morning, and I must admit I was pretty excited to see who Kate's dress was going to be designed by. I'm sure most of you were just  as obsessed as I was, so let's run with this fashion idea and brainstorm our favorite videogame outfits. I really love what Harley Quinn wears in Batman: Arkham Asylum, but when it comes to flexibility, comfort, and something that looks damn cool I have to go with Ezio's outfit in Assassin's Creed 2 as one of the coolest videogame costumes ever. What about you, do you have any character costumes that you just absolutely love? Let's hear em.

The Console Wars: Rise of the Machines

So the PlayStation Network has been down for over a week now and I'm wondering how you've all been coping. Are you guys okay? Is the Playstation 3 your only console? Have you been forced to enjoy only single player experiences, or are you a multi-console owner and have been giving extra love to your Xbox 360, Wii, or PC? I want to know what you've been playing since the PSN has been down. I personally don't even own a PS3 (I'm waiting for The Last Guardian, I'm weird) but I've been playing a lot of Half-Life 2 on my new PC. What about you?
