Earlier today, we learned that a hacked Kinect can play Super Mario Bros. That's cool and all, but can it play indie sandbox game Minecraft?

Yes. Yes it can.

Below, YouTube user/innovator leparlon shows off his ability to play Minecraft with Kinect.

This is the best use for a hacked Kinect I've ever seen. Youtube user yankeyan has paired Microsoft's controller-less control system with Nintendo's most iconic games and created something magical. Enjoy the video of Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, and 3 being played with the Kinect.

It looks very difficult, and physically demanding, yes? The control scheme converts full body motions into Mario-speak, and while the creator admits that it is very hard, it undeniably works. Consider it a proof-of-concept. Sadly, yankeyan does not dress up in overalls and a floppy hat for the video.

Whether you're celebrating Kwanzaa, Christmas or the Winter Solstice, the holidays are nigh upon us, and that means one thing: Trudging out to some crappy mall and trying to figure out what some ungrateful d-bag would want you to give 'em. Before you give up and head to the dollar store, watch this week's Feedback, where you can take advantage of the exquisite tastes of G4's Adam Sessler, Abbie Heppe, Nikole Zivalich and me, Stephen Johnson. We'll tell you what to buy whether you're shopping for a PS3 owner, a 360 owner, a Wii owner, or any other fellow games lover.

We're also jawing over the top video game news stories of the week, including:

  • The ban on swastikas in Call of Duty: Black Ops' multiplayer.
  • The mixed messages Kinect hackers are getting from Microsoft.
  • The incredibly poor sales of Tony Hawk: Shred.
  • The release-delay of Portal 2.
  • The apparent closing of developer Bizarre Creations.
  • The changes that have come from the Black Ops title update.

G4 is on the forefront of Kinect nudity recognition. Our video featuring adult actress Kirsten Price proved conclusively that Kinect, in its current form, does not censor nudity. But recently, Kinect hacker Dan Wilcox proved that the device can be hacked to recognize breasts, gazongas, bewbs, and/or fun-bags. It can then be made to add a bra or some pasties. Just look at the video below for proof.

We will obviously keep you up to date on all Kinect-nudity research and theories as they develop.

Kinect Joy Ride

Does Kinect Joy Ride really play itself? Well, a YouTube video has cropped up showing a blogger named GELTONZ demonstrating that, yes, in fact, the game will play itself with absolutely zero influence on the part of the player…as long as you’re sitting down while you play.

Kinect Mods

No matter how you feel about Microsoft's Kinect as a gaming device, the technology that powers the controller-less control system is pretty sweet, a fact not lost on the legions of technology tinkerers and hackers out there. There is a rapidly growing and thriving Kinect mod scene happening right now, with techies using Kinect to make 3D video images, create live video puppets, and even combining it with a Roomba to create a sentient robot that will enslave us all.

Microsoft's reaction to the enthusiasm is an interesting object lesson on how corporations react to "unauthorized" use of their products. At first, Microsoft's public position was blustery and threatening. Builder Bible Make Magazine responded to the release of Kinect by offering $3000 to anyone who released free software allowing the Kinect to be used with a computer instead of an Xbox.

We all know the Microsoft Kinect is geared at families and children, but do the kids actually like it? In the video below, Bella, an actual seven-year-old girl, plays Kinect with X-Play's Adam Sessler and answers this important question. She also absolutely pwns The Sess at Kinect games: Getting beaten by little kids at Kinect is something all hardcore gamers are probably going to have to get used to.

Don your finest cloak, secure your hidden blades, and make sure your boots are on tight, because the newest edition of Feedback is here. This week, host Adam Sessler is joined by Abbie Heppe, Matt Keil, and yours truly to discuss all of the week’s biggest stories, including the impressive sales figures for Call of Duty: Black Ops and Microsoft’s Kinect, and the now triple official release date of Gran Turismo 5, as well as the game of the week, the thoroughly enjoyable Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood.

Feedback -- Assassin's Creed Brotherhood Multiplayer Mayhem »

Assuming no one’s pounced on you from above just yet, here’s a guide for this week’s discussion:
  • To no one’s surprise, COD: Black Ops sold a ton, around $360 million on day one to be exact. But as we all know, true success is measured by how many communist dictators you offend, and even on this scale, Black Ops is a big hit.
  • Kinect has proven to be a big hit, with an estimated 1.3 million units sold worldwide and 2.5 million titles sold in the U.S., including the Kinect Adventures bundle.
  • Microsoft promises that hardcore Kinect games are on the docket for 2011. Here are my suggestions: Gestures of War, Flailo 4, and Jog of Duty.
  • Is Kinect monitoring your every move and transmitting your activities to advertisers and government agencies? Of course it isn’t. It’s not a microwave after all.
  • Yes. Gran Turismo 5 is being released next week. I know. “Ha ha! Good one Jake!” No really! It’s happening!
  • Even though Ubisoft has said it is giving Assasssin’s Creed a break in 2011, it’s planning something AC related for 2011. There’s already a comic book, animated series, and live action short. I’m not expecting a new game, so what could it be?

In the X-Play Kinect comedy video below, Adam Sessler learns that the Kinect is watching you. Always watching you. Even during your most private, intimate moments, Microsoft Kinect is spying, its red eye is turned towards you, staring while you're naked, or worse...

 Cliff Bleszinski Confirms

Epic Games is expected to make a Kinect-related Gears of War reveal at Spike TV’s upcoming Video Game Awards, and while nothing is known for sure at this point, Epic’s Cliff Blizinsky has clarified one of the rumors swirling around the interwebs: “No Kinect in Gears of War 3.”

When we received a Microsoft Kinect recently, G4 wanted to really put the device through its technical paces and test the system's face and body recognition software. So we called porn star Kirsten Price.

The Wicked Pictures contract performer and star of G4's Sexpo South Africa put on a skimpy bikini and checked out Kinect's chat to see if Kinect had some kind of nudity-identification capability, whether Kinect censors video chat or picture sending, as well as checking out the system's ability to recognize a person in a disguise or wearing different kinds of clothing. This video is much more than a cheaply gratuitous attempt to show a naked porn star... we're doing it for Science

Microsft Unveils Kinect, Formerly Project Natal

Last week, we quoted Microsoft's chief operating officer and chief financial officer Dennis Durkin about Kinect's capacity for monitoring your living room in order to provide advertising data (IE: How many people are in the room when an ad is shown? How many people are in the room when a game is being played?) Microsoft wants you to know that Kinect is not spying on you.

Here's the statement sent to The Wall Street Journal:

“Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE do not use any information captured by Kinect for advertising targeting purposes. Microsoft has a strong track record of implementing some of the best privacy protection measures in the industry. We place great importance on the privacy of our customers’ information and the safety of their experiences.”

Microsoft Q1 Profits Down 18%, Xbox Division Sees Boost

According to Microsoft's UK marketing boss Stephen McGill, hardcore Kinect games will be shown off in 2011.

"Back in September at the Tokyo Game Show we announced a whole range of incredible games really targeted to core gamers that are going to be dedicated to Kinect - adventure games, horror games etc," McGill said at a British U.K. Kinect launch event this week.

"We'll start showing more of those in 2011. 2011 is going to be an amazing year for gamers both on Kinect and normal controller-based games for Xbox 360. I think there's something for everyone," McGill added.
