Kinect

I'm surprised it's taken this long to happen, but we've got video of a combination of Garry's Mod and Kinect. Created by By John Boiles, The project allows you to control characters in Valve's Source game engine using Kinect. Here's the video:

Here's some more information on the mod, and here's where you can download the code.

Greetings Feed faithful! It’s that time of the week again, and even though our skilled team is still recovering from GDC and in the process of prepping for PAX this weekend (whew!), we knew you’d just be a wreck if you didn’t get your Feedback fix. And to be honest, so would we.

So this week, host Adam Sessler welcomes Matt Keil, Stephen Johnson, and Nikole Zivalich to chat about the highlights from this year’s Game Developers Conference, including Battlefield 3, Reckoning: Kingdom of Amalur, Dead Island and more, as well as what we are looking forward to at PAX. The gamer gang also discusses the game of the week, Dragon Age II, and dissects the missteps, the missed opportunities, and the sadly overshadowed successes of BioWare’s latest fantasy epic.

Ubisoft Aiming High With New Toronto Studio

Earlier today, the gaming nation was delighted/confused/frightened by the trailer for We Dare, a sexy game for the Wii and Kinect where couples use their game systems to engage in hanky-panky activities with one another in a most un-Amish fashion. The game is out in Europe now, but according to a Ubisoft spokesperson, We Dare is not coming out in the United States.

Sorry, everyone.

Virtua Tennis 4

Sega's Virtua Tennis 4 has a release date. You'll be able to swing your mighty raquet on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii on May 10, 2011.

As you'd expect, the game is playable with Wii MotionPlus controller, the Kinect and the PlayStation Move, and it features tennis heroes Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Juan Martin Del Porto and Caroline Wozniacki.

If you remember back to the launch of the Wii, you'll remember how all anyone ever played on Wii Sports were the tennis games, and sometimes the bowling game -- there's something about tennis that makes it uniquely suited to motion controls, don't you agree?

G4 Is Heading To GDC 2011!

Hey, Feed faithful! This year’s Game Developers Conference is just around the corner, and we here at G4 are in the final planning stages as we prepare to bring you all of the breaking news, interviews, previews, panel discussions, rumors and videos your precious game-loving brains can handle straight from one of the year's biggest gatherings in the games industry.

GDC 2011 officially kicks off Monday, February 28 and lasts through March 4, and G4tv.com will be all over it like some kind of incurable developer conference fungus, only…you know…not as gross. We’re expecting to see plenty of big name titles at the show, from Battlefield 3 to The Darkness 2 to, perhaps, the new game from Epic Games that was previously rumored to be announced at the show. In other words, lots of good stuff.

In addition to the countless number of fascinating panels and roundtables, another big highlight will obviously be the keynote presentation from Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, in which he may or may not announce that Wii Points have become the official currency of the universe. It’s more likely that he’ll stick to the keynote topic, “Video Games Turn 25: A Historical Perspective and Vision for the Future,” but we’ll see.

So keep your eyes and ears glued to G4tv.com starting next week for all of the latest updates from this year’s big show.

Microsft Unveils Kinect, Formerly Project Natal

Microsoft will begin aiding Kinect hackers by releasing a software development kit to help programmers build Kinect compatible programs for Windows PCs. Releasing a toolkit for hackers is a far-cry from what we normally see from game companies who often sue gamers who mod consoles. The toolkit is expected to be released sometime in the coming months.

We first learned about Xbox Live's Avatar Kinect at CES this year, and the service that allows for face-to-face chat between Avatars through Kinect seemed equal parts perplexing and interesting -- a neat idea I don't think I would ever actually use because I'm way too antisocial.

Yesterday, Microsoft showed off the service, in action, for the first time at its headquarters. Check out the video:

So, there it is.  The technology seems to work -- eyebrows and lips function as you'd expect, etc... but I'm still not sold. As much as I'd love to tell bad jokes while impersonating Abraham Lincoln, I'm still in the "meh" camp because I don't have any friends I want to talk to that badly.

What about you guys? Do you like the idea of an animated avatar chats like the ones you see about?

Sesame Street Kinect Game Coming From Double Fine

Ordinarily, we wouldn't be telling you about a Sesame Street video game. Only the most precocious toddlers read our site (hi, Dave!), and most of the readers we do have will never procreate. But kiddie game Sesame Street: Once Upon A Monster is different: It's from Double Fine. Yes, the company founded by Tim Schafer, creator of Stacking, Psychonauts and the not kid-friendly-at-all head-banger Brutal Legend.

The game itself is for Kinect, and is described as a "truly original interactive experience," where players join Cookie Monster, Elmo and other Sesame Street characters as they explore a living storybook. Sounds like a "jump into the painting!" style game, tailored made of Kinect and playing with little children -- insert pedobear reference here.

Windows Phone 7's compatibility with Xbox Live could be used with Kinect, at least according to this demo from Microsoft. They recently showed off this technology demo at Steve Ballmer's MWC keynote. The demo shows the game Rally Ball being played co-op by two people; one in front of their TV playing with the Kinect and the other on the couch playing on the Windows Phone 7. This is supposed to be simply a demo to show off what the technology is capable of. I don't buy that for one second, though! How long do you think it will take for Microsoft to officially announce this?
