Kinect

Minecraft

At its E3 press conference just moments ago, a A 360 version of Minecraft was just announced. The game will support Kinect, and will be out this winter. How the sandbox style, build-anything game will work with the 360 remains to be seen, but the possibilities are remarkable... just imagine the huge community of Live in a Minecraft server, with the ability to build any kinds of structures they can dream of.

More info as it become available.

E3 2010: Codename: Kingdoms E3 Trailer »

Is Ryse Crytek’s first-person, Roman centurion-based game Codename: Kingdom that Microsoft announced during last year’s E3? Well, we won’t know for sure until Microsoft’s E3 2011 press conference (starting at 9:30am today), but according to a listing that appeared on Xbox.com this morning, spotted by Nowgamer.com, it seems rather likely.

“You are the warrior in this cinematic action-packed Kinect experience,” reads the description under the Ryse header. Seems like it could be any number of things, but our early money is on it being Crytek’s new game. What do you think?

Be sure to check out the stream of Microsoft's E3 presentation right here on G4 to see what Ryss really ends up being! We'll be bringing it to you live, beginning at 9:30 AM PST. Go there now and hang out and chat!

Kinect Star Wars Announced -- Now You Can Be A Jedi In Your Living Room

Get ready to wield your invisible lightsaber and use the force when Kinect Star Wars force pushes its way on to the Xbox 360 this winter. Kinect Star Wars will include different modes set throughout both of the Star Wars trilogies. "In the "Jedi Destiny" mode -- which will be showcased at E3 -- you play one of several new characters in a story that begins shortly after the events of Star Wars: Episode One -- The Phantom Menace and concludes against the backdrop of Chancellor Palpatine's rise to power on Star Wars: Episode Three -- Revenge of the Sith," said Entertainment Weekly.

You'll also travel to places like Bespin, the giant cloud city from The Empire Strikes Back, and fight against the evil Darth Vader. In Kinect Star Wars you'll get to use "use the Force" to lift or throw objects, and you'll also be able to use your hands to mimic driving a pod racer, firing the guns on an X-wing fighter, and yeah, wielding a lightsaber. The devs also mentioned there will be a voice component, perhaps Jedi Mind Tricks, but they haven't confirmed or denied those to be true.

Mass Effect 3 Better With Kinect?

According to a poster on the NeoGaf forum, Mass Effect 3 box art appeared on the EA store earlier today. A purple bar on the cover seems to indicate BioWare may think Mass Effect 3 is "better with Kinect." Xbox 360 games with the purple bar have Kinect compatible features. The image has apparently since been taken down from EA's site. A few weeks ago during EA's investor call they confirmed we'd be seeing a new way to play ME3 at E3. Could Kinect gameplay be that new feature?

Keep reading to see a list of ways I think Mass Effect 3 could use Kinect compatibility.

Kinect hacks and unofficial mods from the Xbox community are so last year. What's really cool these days is programmers from France using an open source Kinect and a neural network to read and translate American Sign Language.

At this point, it only recognizes the ASL signs for "hello" and "sorry," but the programmers say the coding process for other words is complete, and all that remains is motion capture of the associated gestures.

I think it's pretty cool, seeing video game technology taken to be used as something useful. It's particularly nice to see the handicapped audience recognized and not ignored. How about you? Does this sort of programming excite you, or would you rather Kinect stay focused as a tool for gaming?

Playstation Move vs Microsoft Kinect: The Future of Motion Control

According to reports on Eurogamer, E3 will see the announcement of "at least 10" non-sequel Kinect titles. Eurogamer's sources say these titles will "serve the hardcore" and "won't be obvious." Eurogamer also saysKinect titles Kinect Sports 2 and Dance Central 2 will be announced at the show.

There's a lot of speculation as to who is developing what Kinect game over at Eurogamer's site, so feel free to dig in, but as for the overall thrust of the report -- that Kinect is entering its "hardcore" phase-- what do you think?

Skype LogoA tremendously huge deal was announced today in the tech world, when Microsoft revealed that it had purchased internet communication service Skype for $8.5 billion. Microsoft plans to bring Skype to the 360, saying that Skype will support devices like Xbox and Kinect. When this is implemented, it will allow Xbox Live users to connect with Lync, Outlook and other communities. No time frame has been announced for the eventual rollout of the Skype services for the 360.

“Skype is a phenomenal service that is loved by millions of people around the world,” said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer in a statement “Together we will create the future of real-time communications so people can easily stay connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues anywhere in the world.”

How a Skype connected Xbox with Kinect will work, what it will do exactly and how it will look remains to be seen, but it will certainly make for an interesting E3 press event for Microsoft. We promise we'll tell you all about it, the second it happened, with tons of live coverage of the Microsoft presser, as well as the rest of the divine madness of E3 2011! Keep your browser tuned to G4 for E3, June 7-9.
