Harmonix Responds To Recent Layoffs

Today at DICE, we caught up with John Drake, manager of communications at Harmonix, and asked him about the recent layoffs his company has endured. As you might recall, Harmonix was put up for sale by parent company Viacom last year, and late in the year an investment firm stepped in and bought the company, making them an independent developer once again.

Adam Sessler spoke with John Drake about the layoffs, which are part of a restructuring, and read on after the break to find out what he had to say.

Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr at E3 2009

The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr has trademarked his name for use in video games. Starr filed the "Ringo" trademark for  "computer game software" and "downloadable computer games via the Internet and wireless devices," as well as "toys, namely toy vehicles, plush toys…etc."

No word yet on what (if anything) Ringo plans to do with his fresh new trademark, but I can only hope Ringo's All Starrs: Rock Band is released, if only so I'll finally be able to play such Ringo Starr solo classics as "Snookeroo," "No No Song," "Back Off Boogaloo" and.. uh, "Snookeroo" in Rock Band.

Rock Band 3: The Clash's London Calling Album Coming To DLCNext week, you'll be able to download The Clash's London Calling for Rock Band 3. Yes, the whole album.

London Calling is the single best album released in the history of rock and roll. It's better than Sgt. Pepper's, OK Computer, Pet Sounds, Blonde on Blonde, Exile on Main Street and Lady Gaga's The Fame. It is the quintessential rock record, from the cover, with its reference to Elvis Presely's first album cover to the songs, each of which is a rock masterpiece.  Honestly, it's too good for you. You probably couldn't handle it. Frank Meyer, G4's resident rock and roll scholar, says London Calling is not even in the top 20 albums of all time, but he's on crack!

Anyway, some of the tracks will feature pro-guitar for a bit of an extra fee. The tracks are under the cut. The "pro" ones are marked with an "X."

Justin Bieber

We're super big fans of pop star Justin Bieber -- I'm sure you are too -- but Nintendo, apparently, is not. Bieber's people recently asked Nintendo for permission to use a bit of the iconic Super Mario Brothers theme in an upcoming Bieber-riffic Bieber-fest of a 3D concert movie and lifestyle documentary called Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. (I'm expecting a generation-defining film like The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter.) Nintendo said some variation of, "Nope. Sorry, Biebs."

John Chu, director of Don't Look Back... er, I mean Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, tweeted the following recently:

"aw C'mon Nintendo! Y won't u let us use the Mario theme for 15 secs in the @Justinbieber movie...talk about free advertising passed up. Oops"

Y indeed?

Links of TheFeed: Nintendo Before Hoes.

If there is one thing that I have learned during my time as a gamer, it is that video game tattoos can be both incredibly awesome and absolutely horrendous. A well thought out inking as a tribute to your favorite game is a great idea. But a poorly thought out Nintendo logo tattoo done by an artist who probably practices with crayons? Not such a great choice. Case in point: This photo gallery of horrible video game ink. Now, I love me some video games, but I would literally kill myself if I woke up with "Nintendo before hoes" on my arm. So the next time your partially drunk friend feels like getting Mario inked onto his right butt cheek, be sure to point him to the gallery found in this week’s links. And then slap him. Slap him really hard.

Then you should treat yourself to something nice.  Now admittedly, holiday music is not everyone’s cup of mana potion, so The Feed has put together a Nice List, and checked it twice, of video game inspired and chiptunes holiday sounds that if you were to put on during your family gathering today, you would either delight your friends and family or cause them to look at you like you as if you had lobsters crawling out of your ears.  Come on in for a listen.  Many of the artists featured have even given you a present of a free download of their merry sounds.
