Nickleback

Sound the celebratory trumpets: Nickelback is coming to the Rock Band network. The band, probably the greatest rock and roll band on the planet (other than Creed) are bringing six of their most unforgettable tracks to the music game so you can rock and/or roll all day and all night -- once you finish your homework, of course. The entire track list is below.

Power Gig: Rise of the Six String

Power Gig: Rise of the Six String is that other music game with a real guitar... but it also has "air-drums" and a different feel from Rock Band or Guitar Hero. Sterling McGarvey says this of the drums:

"I also got my first hands-on with PowerGig’s drums, which seems built expressly with apartment-dwellers and traveling in mind. They’re around ¾ of the length of Rock Band’s drums, they’re set in a lower position, and they’re designed to be tossed in a backpack and taken around with you. The big bonus? They use light sensors to detect your hits, so you’ve got quiet drums that’ll keep your landlord from kicking you out. Well, at least in theory they work. I’ve been told that the drums are something you’ll need to adjust and play with a lot to find your sweet spot."

Yo, homie. Step up and prove whether you're a dope rhyme sayer, a sucka MC or something in between in Def Jam Rapstar! Sterling McGarvey stepped up to the mic to spit a def preview, saying:

"In my opinion, there's not a lot here that you haven't seen executed in karaoke games before -- My SingStar has already made huge strides in building community around it with most of these features -- but it's all done with a bit more...swagger here."

Activision Hosts Spectacular, Expensive Event At E3

Activision staged a massive event last night at the Staples Center, borrowing it briefly from the Lakers who are clinging to the hopes of another NBA title. But before the hoops return, they needed the place for one night to hold what I'm calling they're "We're Made Out Of Money!" show. We went to this event expecting to be told about some of Activision's highly anticipated titles. Instead, we got a full-fledged concert. And very little game information.

We expected to possibly hear about some new titles, or hear about a new partnership, or at the very least find out about Activision's plans to take over the world. But we got none of that as they trotted out musical star after musical star. There was one new title announced, Tony Hawk: Shred, and you can get the details on that, and the cavalcade of talent in the rest of the story.

Gears of War 3

It's looking like rappers will be heavily represented in Gears of War 3. Last week, we learned that O.G. Ice-T says he's providing a voice for the game, and this morning we learn that rapper Drake is confirmed as voice talent in the game. Maybe most importantly to gamers: Drake will be doing the voice for Jace Stratton, a new playable character in the upcoming finale to the celebrated Gears saga.

Rock Band 3

USA Today broke the news last night, and now we can tell you what we think of the incredibly ambitious Rock Band 3. Demonstrated for us at a pre-E3 event a few weeks ago, Rock Band 3 does indeed feature a keyboard (or if you prefer, keytar) and a "Pro" mode with high-caliber instruments that actually teach you how to play the real thing. If you will allow me to quote myself...

"Rock Band "Pro" is something that's built entirely separately from the regular Rock Band experience we're all familiar with. Requiring the use of brand new hardware (again developed by Mad Catz), the Pro guitar is a six-"string," 17-fret axe that has sensors at every position. This means actual notes and chords show up on the expanded note highway that kind of looks like mobile guitar tablature. The idea isn't to be complex for the sake of complexity, but to actually teach players how to make proper chord shapes, how to do real hammer-ons and pull-offs, and the musical theory behind everything. Basically, skills that you can transfer directly from your Rock Band guitar to a real guitar."

DJ Hero 2

Activision is looking to up the DJ Hero-ness for their upcoming record-spinning sequel DJ Hero 2 by introducing a second turntable and vocals into the mix. This seems like a natural progression (one that perhaps should have been present the first spin around), and based on Andrew Pfister’s pre-E3 2010 impressions of the game, it will lend itself perfectly to creating a more free-flowing and organic gameplay experience.

“Utilizing the second turntable allows FreeStyleGames to concoct appropriate multiplayer modes, most appealing of which is the DJ Battle. This is set up like a traditional DJ battle would be, with a call and response structure that starts out with one DJ playing a segment, the other DJ matching that segment while adding a little something extra, and then it escalates from there with both players freestyling and crossfading for max points.”

Check out Andrew’s E3 2010 preview of DJ Hero 2 for more details.

Harmonix Says You'll Be

Newspaper The USA Today has an early look at Rock Band 3, and yes, the game does include a two octave, 25-key keyboard as well as three-part harmonies and a newly announed "pro" guitar described as a "full-sized, fully functional Fender guitar." The keyboard and harmonies means Rock Band 3 will allow up to seven players to jam at once. Amazing.
