2013 Games Preview: Rayman Legends

Posted January 14, 2013 - By Adam Rosenberg

2013 Games Preview: Rayman LegendsRelease Date: February 26, 2013

Developer: Ubisoft Montpellier

Publisher: Ubisoft

Platform(s): Wii U

Rayman is back! After 2011's outstanding side-scrolling platformer, Rayman Origins, Ubisoft Montpellier returns for a direct sequel in Rayman Legends. The Wii U exclusive is one of the most wanted early 2013 games for Nintendo's new platform, and it promises to make use of the new console's unusual tablet-like controller to add an entirely new layer to the game.

What We Know:

Rayman and his pals are wandering through an enchanted forest one day when they come across a tent filled with paintings. No matter that hanging a painting from a flimsy tent wall is next to impossible. This is a video game. Get over it. It turns out that each of the paintings is actually a door into another world, with each piece of artwork offering a sense of what sort of world awaits.

We learned earlier this week that TT Games is going to be tackling LEGO Marvel Super Heroes as its next adorably geek-friendly game, and a newly released video from Game Informer offers an early look at how things are going at the studio. While you'll see various heroes in action, including Iron Man, Wolverine, and Hulk, the character you DON'T see is the most exciting one mentioned: GALACTUS.

Yes, Marvel's planet-sized Devourer of Worlds is going to play some part in the story for LEGO Marvel Super Heroes. OF COURSE HE IS. If you're going to gather all of Earth's mightiest into a single, LEGO-fied game, who better to pit them all against than a LEGO-fied Galactus? TT Games' LEGO efforts tend to run hot and cold with me, but LEGO The Lord of the Rings is pretty outstanding and LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is looking like it could definitely follow suit.

Electronic Arts and Crytek have fired off the latest episode of the Albert Hughes-directed and -produced web series, The Seven Wonders of Crysis 3, titled Cause and Effect. Taking a page from the acclaimed Dead Island reveal trailer, the all-CG short spins the clock back on Prophet's wanton destruction of CELL Corporation property.

This continues to be a sweet little web series based on Crytek's upcoming game, one which seems to serve little purpose beyond serving up a bunch of "Hey, that's really cool!" slices of action inspired by the game. Do you prefer this approach to a more typical gameplay trailer or dev diary? After all, a trailer can only do so much to sell you on a game; the final call can only be made when you actually play the thing.

2013 Games Preview: Metal Gear Rising: RevengeanceRelease Date: February 19, 2013

Developer: PlatinumGames

Publisher: Konami

Platform(s): PlayStation 3, Xbox 360

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance has a silly name, but it's much more than just a title. It's a first step in a new direction for a franchise that has never shied away from trying something different. The nearly canceled, Raiden-focused (read: CYBER NINJA-focused) brawler is now in the hands of the best possible developer for this sort of release: PlatinumGames. Who else is crazy excited for over-the-top face-meltery?

What We Know:

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a canonical story set in the Metal Gear universe, but it's not the proper next chapter in the ongoing saga of Snake-related codenames. This action-centric adventure focuses on the cyborg ninja-fied Raiden, fully restored to peak condition after his alarmingly frequent maimings in Metal Gear Solid 4: Sons of the Patriots. The story follows Raiden, a PMC soldier boy, as he takes on a competing PMC that is wrapped up in various terrorist actions. The cutscenes are shorter but the story is just as wacky as you'd expect or hope for from a Metal Gear game.

Crash Bandicoot was very nearly the star of his own Nintendo DS game, called Crash Landed. Renegade Kid was reportedly working on the title for Activision sometime in 2008/2009, and a newly posted video from Nintendo World Report gives a glimpse at what might have been.

The demo video's gameplay, which Renegade Kid's Jools Watsham tells Destructoid was put together in two weeks, features Crash as he hops and spins his way around a 3D beach setting. It's not clear why the game was canceled, but that's often the case with this sort of thing.

Cyberpunk 2077 Cinematic Teaser Trailer »

CD Projekt Red has been teasing gamers with the title Cyberpunk 2077, and now we have our first glimpse of what The Witcher 2 dev has in store thanks to a newly released trailer. You won't see any gameplay here, but you will see a slick CG short featuring a scantily clad robo-woman with a pair of nasty-looking arm-length blades protruding from her elbows. So there's that.

The trailer notes a release date of "when it's done," though the dedicated NeoGAF community (via Joystiq) discovered a hidden message from CDPR embedded in a single frame near the end of the trailer. The message states that 2015 is the scheduled launch window for Cyberpunk 2077, adding that CDPR is also working on a different "fully open-world game with an intense story" that will be revealed on February 5, 2013.

In addition to the trailer, the dev also released some details about the world of Cyberpunk 2077. You'll find the info-packed rundown, ripped straight from the press release, after the jump.

2013 Games Preview: Crysis 3

Posted January 10, 2013 - By Adam Rosenberg

2013 Games Preview: Crysis 3Release Date: February 19, 2013

Developer: Crytek

Publisher: Electronic Arts

Platform(s): PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Windows

Once a franchise that was known for straining the capabilities of gaming PCs the world over, Crysis now seems to be settling into a groove that embraces open environments, varied play styles, and jaw-droppingly stunning graphics. All three of those elements have been very much at the forefront of everything we've seen so far from Crytek for Crysis 3.

What We Know:

Crysis 3 picks up in 2047, a full 24 years after the events of Crysis 2. Our Nanosuit-clad hero -- the body of Alcatraz wearing the suit of Prophet -- returns to the ruins of New York City, which is now encased in a massive CELL-controlled Nanodome. The city itself is a disaster zone, completely overrun by vegetation and littered with the remains of the alien Ceph technology. The Nanodome is ostensibly there to protect the city and cleanse it of alien life, but CELL is also using it as a cover to mask an attempted global takeover.

Microsoft isn't quite ready to reveal its next-gen hardware plans, but a proof-of-concept that surfaced this week for something called IllumiRoom points to one direction the company is thinking in (via Gamasutra). In short, IllumiRoom uses Kinect for Windows combined with a projector to bleed on-screen content out into the room around your TV.

Watch the proof-of-concept video above and you'll see that while it's not QUITE a real-life Holodeck, it's still a pretty neat thing that can be used to expand your field of view in a game. Microsoft isn't ready to reveal any concrete plans for IllumiRoom, but an official website confirms that more will be revealed at April's ACM SIGCHI Conference in Paris, France.

Defiance Gameplay Trailer

Defiance, Trion Worlds online open world shooter, is coming to consoles and PC in April and we have the latest gameplay trailer for you “Massive Co-Op” below. The trailer showcases some of the guns, vehicles, and huge boss battles that await you and your friends (and their friends, and their friends) in the ruins of alien ravaged San Francisco. There’s a pretty fantastic moment where someone on an ATV power slides through several enemies that’s worth the price of admission alone.

In case you forgot, Defiance is part of what the suits are calling a “transmedia experience” which will link the game to a SyFy original television series of the same name.

Check it out:

Pretty cool right? I think I need to see a little bit more of the game before I'm 100% sold but I’m definitely interested to see how the game and the TV show sync up. Are you?

2013 Games Preview: Aliens: Colonial MarinesRelease Date: February 12, 2013

Developer: Gearbox Software

Publisher: Sega

Platform(s): PlayStation 3, Wii U, Xbox 360, Windows

In space, no one can hear you scream. In Aliens: Colonial Marines, all of your co-op friends can hear it, and they'll laugh at you mercilessly for being such a wuss. Unless they're screaming too, of course. That's what Gearbox Software is shooting for in this Sega-published adventure that has 20th Century Fox's series canon seal of approval.

What We Know:

The story in Aliens: Colonial Marines is framed as a direct sequel to James Cameron's 1986 film Aliens, though it also occurs after the events of Alien 3 as well. The U.S.S. Sulaco has been discovered in orbit around LV-426 and players assume the role of Corporal Christopher Winter, a Colonial Marine who is a member of the search and rescue crew sent to investigate the unresponsive vessel.

Electronic Arts is sharing a new look at Maxis' SimCity in the form of the game's intro video. There's not much to it, really; you've likely played tons of games in your life and, as such, have seen tons of intro videos that offer a basic sense of what the game is like.

This refreshed take on SimCity arrives on March 8, 2013. The game's "always-on" Internet requirement has put a few fans off, but early looks at Maxis' enhancements to the series have largely been met with positive responses. Will you be building your own metropolitan paradise (or hellhole) come March?

2013 Games Preview: Dead Space 3Release Date: February 5, 2013

Developer: Visceral Games

Publisher: Electronic Arts

Platform(s): PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Windows

Necromorphs are bad news, always, but their newly expanded ranks are only one of the worries you'll have to deal with in Visceral Games' Dead Space 3. Isaac Clarke's latest adventure doesn't have to be a solo one, with newcomer Sgt. John Carver coming along for those who play through the story in co-op. It's one of several changes that aim to offer a more accessible Dead Space game for series neophytes.

What We Know:

Dead Space 3 picks up two months after the events of the previous game, with Isaac Clarke being brought in by Sgt. John Carver and his superiors to help investigate a 200-year-old Necromorph infestation on the icy world of Tau Volantis. The Necros were apparently well on their way to destroying everything when the infestation just... stopped. Now it's up to Clarke and Carver to figure out what happened and see if there's anything that can be used to fight the Necromorph threat in the present day.

2013 Games Preview: Ni No Kuni: Wrath Of The White WitchRelease Date: January 22, 2013

Developer: Level-5 / Studio Ghibli

Publisher: Namco Bandai

Platform(s): PlayStation 3

The phrase "ni no kuni" translates directly from Japanese to "two countries," which is fitting given the marriage of gaming and film at work in Level-5's Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. The RPG is the product of a collaboration between the veteran developer and Studio Ghibli, the anime production studio behind the likes of Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away. Early reports from the 2011 Japanese version of the game suggest that this is a perfect pairing.

What We Know:

We actually know a whole lot about Ni no Kuni, given the fact that the game has been available in Japan since November 2011. The story follows a 13-year-old boy named Oliver whose mother dies when she attempts to save him from drowning. Oliver's tears of grief give life to a doll named Drippy, a gift from his departed mother. It turns out that Drippy is actually a fairy who, with the help of a magical book, is able to transport Oliver into a parallel reality where his mother may still be found.
