Diablo 3

Blizzard had been planning to add a Team Deathmatch PvP option to Diablo 3 in a coming update, though a new blog post from lead designer Jay Wilson confirms that the mode has been officially shelved. The big issues seem to be the mode's lack of depth and the fact that classes are tuned and balanced for PvE play first.

As Wilson writes, "our core problem is that our Team Deathmatch mode doesn't feel like a great addition to Diablo III. It's not up to the quality that Blizzard gamers expect or that we feel you deserve, and it doesn't really fit with our goals for the rest of the game." The mode has been shelved entirely as a result, and the team is "going back to the drawing board" to work on a TDM "replacement."

That replacement, along with the still-confirmed 1v1 dueling -- coming in patch v1.0.7 "sometime after the new year" -- will be completely free additions to the core game.

Dead Space 3

Electronic Arts and Visceral Games will be giving Dead Space 3 fans a chance to try the game early with a playable demo that will launch on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms next month. The official release date is January 22, 2012, just a few weeks short of the game's February 5 launch.

You've got options though. Those who would like to take an earlier crack at the demo -- on Xbox 360 only, unfortunately -- can do so by browsing over to demo.deadspace.com and following the directions there. It's easy; you just need to provide your birthday and sign in from there to your Origin account. You'll then be sent a download code that will allow you to access the demo a full week early.

Sure, X-Play might have started out small and humble, but once the good times got rolling, Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb rode an international drug-fueled rocket ship of destruction that was completely unsustainable. When the huge crash came, you can bet E! True Hollywood Story was there to document it all. Watch the video below to find out what went down.

Mega Man, SMB: The Lost Levels Come To 3DS eShop

It's a good day to be a Nintendo fan, with the latest 3DS eShop update making a pair of bona fide classics easily downloadable. Capcom's original Mega Man game is now available in the eShop, with the subsequent five releases in the series to follow in the coming months. Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels is also new in the 3DS eShop this week. Both games are available for $4.99 apiece.

Elsewhere in the world of Nintendo, Wii U owners can take advantage of an ongoing eShop holiday sale on the new platform. Three downloadable titles -- Little Inferno, Trine 2: Director's Cut, and Chasing Aurora -- are all available at reduced prices; $9.99, $15.99, and $7.49, respectively. For those who'd like to take a break from the new console's disc-based launch titles, this eShop trio is a solid bunch.

Retro City Rampage

The latest PlayStation Plus update is live, with both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita versions of Retro City Rampage now available for free to members as part of the Instant Game Collection. The update also lays out a number of member-only price drops as part of Sony's ongoing Holiday Essentials Sale.

PlayStation Network favorites Journey and Papo y Yo both fall under $10 now, with a price tag of $7.35 for each. Zipper Interactive's solid PS Vita shooter Unit 13 is also a lower-priced steal, at $12.94 for PS Plus members. Then there's Duke Nukem Forever, which is still way, way, WAY too expensive at $9.80. Check out the full list over at PlayStation Blog.

Borderlands 2

There probably aren't too many of you who missed out on Gearbox Software's outstanding Borderlands 2, but those who did can get it -- along with a few other things called "Borderlands" -- on the cheap for today only. Microsoft's ongoing Countdown to 2013 Xbox Live deals continue today with temporary price drops on a trio of Borderlands offerings (via Major Nelson).

The original Borderlands is selling via Games On Demand for $9.99, though it's not the DLC-loaded Game of the Year edition (which can be gotten elsewhere for $19.99). Borderlands 2 is also a Game On Demand offering, marked down 33 percent to $39.99 (from $59.99). Finally, the Borderlands 2 Season Pass that allows you to pre-buy four DLC packs for the game (two of which are already available) is selling for 1,800 MS Points (down from 2,400).

Grand Theft Auto's Last-Gen Map Downloads

Rockstar Games has a nice gift for longtime fans in the form of downloadable high-resolution maps for some of its older Grand Theft Auto games. The GTA titles of the previous hardware generation -- GTA3, Vice City, and San Andreas -- all included paper city maps inside the game box, and those maps are now available for you to download via Rockstar Newswire.

All three of these titles are now available on a variety of platforms, with Vice City's 10th anniversary mobile release being the most recent (that game is also coming soon to PlayStation Network as a PS2 Classic). The maps aren't any kind of replacement for actually learning the streets as you play, but they're cool relics from a bygone era that you can now pore over at your leisure.

Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider, which Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix will release on March 5, 2013, may feature some sort of multiplayer component that pits Lara Croft's shipmates against "Yamatai's scavengers" in "a variety of modes," according to a now-edited GAME UK product listing (as reported by All Games Beta). We've reached out to Square Enix for comment, as there's been no official talk yet of anything other than the story-driven campaign that reboots the series.

UNofficially, this isn't the first hint we've had that Tomb Raider will deliver something for the multiplayer crowd. Way, way back in 2010, a Crystal Dynamics job listing sought a producer to "take on a major production role in the multi-player part of an upcoming action adventure title" (via MTV Multiplayer). The job could conceivably have been for a different game, though don't forget that the studio has worked on nothing but Tomb Raider since 2006 (as far as the public knows).

Stay tuned for an update from Square Enix as soon as we hear back.

Sure, most times gamers see Kratos, he can get away with stabbing first and asking questions later, but in domestic life, he's got to play by the rules just like everyone else. He doesn't always find the adjustment back to civilian life so easy though, as demonstrated in this video from the X-Play Classics vault.

Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z Tokyo Game Show 2012 Reveal Trailer »

Spark Unlimited's ninja-themed zombie game, Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, isn't officially confirmed for any specific platforms, though some new job listings at the studio suggest that this is a current-gen game (via Joystiq). Multiple listings state that Yaiba is a "3rd Person slasher with horror elements for the PS3 and Xbox 360." Still not official confirmation, mind you, but it's all we have to go on for now.

The job listings offer few other details, though we can infer a number of things based on what roles the studio is looking to fill. Many of the job listings call for experience building game content in Unreal Engine 3. There's also a single multiplayer-oriented listing, which is worded in a way that suggests Yaiba might include either or both adversarial and cooperative online play.

It's all speculation of course, but we'll take what we can get with so little revealed about the game thus far.

This new trailer is meant to prepare you for Visceral Games' Dead Space 3, which hits stores on February 5, 2013. There's still plenty of time to work your way through the series' first two games, but this "story so far" video does all the work for you. Spoilers ahead?

It's not as spoiler-y as you might think, revealing only the main beats of the previous releases. You'll still want to avoid the trailer if Dead Space/Dead Space 2 are on deck for the coming weeks, but even knowledgeable fans can appreciate this video refresher on Markers, Unitology, and other bits of lore from the Dead Space universe.

Grand Theft Auto 5 Screens Reveal Submarines And Blimps

Rockstar Games couldn't give gamers the gift of Grand Theft Auto 5 for the 2012 holiday season, but the studio does the next best thing in giving the gift of new Grand Theft Auto 5 screens. A batch of five new images are posted on the Rockstar Newswire, hinting at several new elements in the game.

As you can see above, the underwater play in the waters around Los Santos will at some point include a submarine. There's no way to know at the moment if you can drive the thing, but I'm going to bet on yes. There are more screens after the jump too, including one that stars a swimming shark and another which shows off some of the game's aircraft. If you look carefully, you'll see a blimp in the background.

Please let us pilot a blimp, Rockstar.

BioShock Infinite's Reversible Cover Selected

The fans have spoken and the reversible cover image for BioShock Infinite has been chosen. Irrational Games has the result posted on its website, though you can also see the winning image above. This Songbird image nabbed itself 38 percent of the total votes, the most out of the six options offered.

The official cover art for BioShock Infinite wasn't terribly well-received among fans due to its somewhat generic feel. Irrational creative director Ken Levine admitted that he was ready for the backlash, explaining that the cover is meant to sell BioShock to mainstream audiences. The fan vote for reversible cover art is meant to give hardened gamers an alternative to the official art.

Do you suffer from a compulsive need to hold on to loot? Even when it's completely worthless, perhaps unsanitary and definitely rendering you wildly overencumbered? Then maybe the story of Davokhiin can help. Sure he might be the hero of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, but he's also got a real problem letting things go.

The Lost Treasures Of Infocom Comes To iOS

The news earlier this week that Infocom founders Dave Lebling and Marc Blanc will be handed a Pioneer Award at the 2013 D.I.C.E. Summit got people wondering about where all of those classic text adventures have gone. Apparently, rights owner Activision has had mobile developer Code Mystics working on an enhanced iOS port of The Lost Treasures of Infocom, and now the collection is officially live in the App Store.

The free download includes Zork 1: The Great Underground Empire at no additional cost, though five-game packs can be purchased at $2.99 a pop. You can also pony up $9.99 for the full 26-title collection, including the never-published Zork: The Undiscovered Underground. The enhanced port offers some useful tools, including a tap-based on-screen compass and the ability to create shortcuts.

More importantly, the enhanced port includes interactive re-creations of each game's "feelies," which were physical items packed into Infocom games that usually carried hints as well as vital copy protection tools. All in all, it's a nice and clean interface. Compliments to Code Mystics on this solid port.
