Toy Fair 2011 Highlights: Video Game Toys Galore!

Last week’s New York Toy Fair has now come and gone, but there are plenty of video game toys on the way for collectors this year.

As usual, New Jersey-based collectibles company NECA has licenses for several big properties, including BioShock Infinite and Gears of War 3. The license for BioShock Infinite was just announced at the show, and we spoke with director of product development Randy Falk about how involved Irrational Games creative director Ken Levine is and how we’ll likely see a range of items similar to NECA’s past line-up for BioShock and BioShock 2.

For Gears of War 3, we’re definitely getting detailed, seven-inch figures of Marcus, Dom, Baird, Cole, Anya and Carmine, which were completely made from scratch to represent their counterparts in the game. There’s also a high-end, full-color statue of Cole in his thrashball uniform that will be made available to fans. These products will be in stores this Fall near the game’s release date, and there will also be a San Diego Comic-Con exclusive figure, as well as more collectibles for Gears in 2012. But that's not all. There's a lot more stuff on the way. Read on for more.

Square Enix Shows Off New Street Fighter IV Toys, Talks the Possibility of More Chrono Trigger Collectibles

Square Enix might be best known for its Final Fantasy franchise, but its merchandising group wants to be known for much more.

The focus for the high-end toymakers this year includes reaching out to more third-party game makers. Looking around at their Toy Fair booth at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York this week, we saw a wide range of collectibles from Konami, Capcom, Sega, Ubisoft and Microsoft. Although these companies are in direct competition with Square Enix’s publishing side, as far as merchandise goes, anything is fair game. Read on to see what they had to say about things.

NECA Talks BioShock Infinite Toys, Says To Expect Exclusive E3 Swag Bags

At New York Toy Fair, one of the busiest booths is always NECA Toys, and it’s easy to see why. The New Jersey-based company makes collectibles for everything from Harry Potter and Twilight to Predator and even The Exorcist, and they’re especially known for their video game-based toys. We talked to Director of Product Development Randy Falk about NECA’s biggest game licenses this year.

BioShock Infinite

One of the highest profile properties NECA recently acquired was BioShock Infinite. Although NECA had made toys for both BioShock and BioShock 2, Infinite wasn’t a shoe-in until the company had met with Irrational Games’ creative director Ken Levine. Falk said that Levine, a big toy geek himself, is heavily involved in the process.

As we close out our Toy Fair 2011 galleries, we thought we'd save the cutest for last. Did you know they're reviving Tetris as a board game? Well, now you know. Just put on some Russian music, and you'll be set to high-step and stack your way to glory. That is, if you aren't too busy playing with some of these Scott Pilgrim toys. Or flinging Angry Birds at each other.

Whichever route you choose, there are toys here for everyone. Whoever said you have to stop buying these past a certain age?

Image From New ThunderCats Series

Cartoon Network's revival of ThunderCats just got a lot more clear as Warner Bros has released the first official image from the series, which is set to hit sometime this year. The series will be a collaboration between the studio giant and Japan's Studio4°C, who were responsible for stylized animated adaptations like The Animatrix, Halo Legends, and Gotham Knights. After a promotional poster was released last year that depicted gritty, menacing imagery of ThunderCats leader Lion-O, the assumption was that the series was headed towards a darker, more realistic tone in concert with that image. However, what we're seeing is something quite different than expected. It appears to contain updates of the characters from the classic 80's series in wide-eyed, pastel-colored anime style. However, even within the seemingly more lighthearted motif, lies what appears to be a clever reinvention of the franchise.

You know what stands between me and being a pro-gamer? Weak wrists. If I had stronger wrists, I'd be at the top of the leaderboards for every game out there. Luckily for me, Dyna-Flex has created the Powerball Gamer, a device that uses centrifugal force to exercise your gaming wrists. It also lights up for maximum sex-appeal to ladies.

Sure, this is a wild idea, but it might be wild enough to work!  (You know, or not.)

The future of play might be here with a new alternative gaming system called Sifteo. The alternative gaming system is a bunch of blocks that sense other blocks and join together to form interesting, multi-system games that aim to bring what's great about classic games like Mah Jong and Chess to the digital gaming world.

A video, though, is worth a thousand words, so click "play" on the video below in which Jeevan Kalanithi, CEO of Sifteo, guides you through an in-depth demo of this hardware.

Angry Birds Board Game Coming

Even on an iPhone, Angry Birds sounds like a stupid idea. Flicking birds at wooden structures to kill pigs? Seriously? But then you play it and you cannot stop. Angry Birds as a board game sounds like an even worse idea... but it's coming, but will it be as addictive as the iPhone game?

Angry Birds: Knock On Wood is due from Mattel in May. It will cost $14.99, but doesn't require an expensive phone or tablet to play. Here's a brief description of how to play:

Player One pulls a mission card. Player Two then builds the structure shown on the card for Player One to attempt to knock down to score as many points as possible. The first to 1,000 points wins.

Sounds interesting, but slightly messy. Do you really want to clean up all those tiny pieces that will inevitably find there way to the floor.

RUMOR: Transformers 3 Title MAY Have Been Revealed

It seems that the title to the upcoming third Transformers film may have been inadvertently revealed. Apparently some folks have spotted listings on Amazon (which have since been removed) for various Transformers books, all under the banner of Transformers: The Dark of the Moon. While there's not a thing about this idea that is confirmed, it is possible that these were prematurely-listed tie-in books which were graced with the 2011 film's yet-to-be-announced title. Yet, as shooting still commences, the film that may or may not be called "The Dark of the Moon" is apparently filling the cast with extremely positive vibes. In a recent interview with MTV, star Shia LaBeouf recently went on record saying with intense enthusiasm, that it was "the best movie we've made of the three by far." Is director Michael Bay ready to redeem what was generally considered a sub-par sequel in Revenge of the Fallen?

The Verdict: Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock Guitar Peripheral

There was a point when my plastic guitar collection was reaching increasingly higher into two-digit numbers, until I scrapped almost all of them. All of them except the outdated Gibson X-Plorer wired controller for GH2 on 360, because I still think it’s the best guitar to date.

That’s why I’m happy to report that the new Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock guitar is probably closest in feel to the X-Plorer than any instrument that’s come out since. The strum and whammy bars feel comparable though, aesthetically, flames aren’t my first choice of decoration for anything; however, the design -- very in step with the graphical look of the game -- is inoffensively campy.
