The MMO Report

You know, you can have too much of a good thing. But not pie. Pie never gets old.

Moving on, this week Casey has some stories that are so bizarre we had to double check our sources. First, topless Nazis are marching down the streets of Seoul, Korea to promote an MMOFPS, a criminal mastermind made off with all the money in an EVE Online bank, and Second Life is trying to make your avatar just as lazy as you are. So lean back, secure your appendages, and prepare yourself. This is...

Wow. The island is like a big record, and it's skipping. That's AWESOME!

Anyway, this week The MMO Report is back, of course, and Casey is dropping the best kind of nerd knowledge on your ass, so you better recognize. This week we tell you about how EVE Online is finally getting rid of their Classic Client, how the IRS wants to tax monetary exchanges in virtual worlds, how CrimeCraft will not be coming to the Xbox 360, and how WTF Second Life can get you put on super-secret double probation. So turn on, tune in, and drop out. This is...

Oh man, what a week! Friday Battlestar Galactica comes back, Monday is MLK day so I don't have to come into work, Tuesday President Obama gets sworn in, and I might be getting a dog!

But you don't really care, do you? You came here for Mister Casey Schreiner and his awesomely hilarious way of telling you about the recent happenings in the world of MMOs. Returning from his holiday and Las Vegas convention sabbatical, Casey comes back with a fury, telling you about a new record for EVE Online players signed-on at the same time, the new gameplay footage and info about DC Universe Online from last week's Consumer Electronics Show, WTF Second Life's successful attempt to ruin a marriage, and the digestion problems of our camera man, famed horror film director Joe Lynch. You'll see.

So prepare for your three-day weekend, enjoy the ridiculously warm weather if you're in California, and celebrate a new chapter in the history of our nation however you see fit. This is...

Great Scott!

Just like The Sess before him, the beginning of a new year means that Casey gets to look forward to the games that are planning to release in 2009. This next year holds some serious milestones for MMOs, specifically the existence of many home console versions. What will happen when A-list MMO titles invade the living rooms of millions of people? Will they have mass appeal? Before you answer those questions make sure you strap-in, gun it to 88, and watch for the three bright flashes. This is...

Another year past. So much has happened. We moved from a broom closet to a real set, we got to travel to a bunch of developers all over the country, and we even got to send our correspondant John Walsh to Blizzcon. And we got a cake.

So to celebrate the passing of 2008, Casey brings you a collection of our favorite bloopers and %@$-ups from the past year. Some are hilarious, some are embarassing, and all of them are worth watching. We have a lot of fun making this show, and we hope you have just as much fun watching it. Thanks for your attention and dedication, we couldn't have done it without you. Happy New Year!

I really, really, really hate shopping for holiday gifts. Thank goodness for the internet and Amazon. They do a really nice job gift wrapping.

Moving on. This is the MMO Report's last show before the New Year, so we made it extra awesome to tide you over for the next two weeks. Casey will drop some knowledge on you about Warhammer Online's celebration of beer, shows off the gameplay footage from the Star Wars: The Old Republic documentary short that hit the internet this past week, the upcoming Cities XL that will bring urban planning to the MMO genre, and how The Agency plans on dealing with classes and leveling without classes and levels. Trust me, it will make sense once you hear it. So wrap up in a blanket, cuddle up beside the fire, and pour a nice Hot Toddy. This is...

In this week's MMO Report, Casey is bringing you a very interesting list of news items that range from honesty, to hype, to personal disgust. And that's before we even get to WTF Second Life. But let's get down to brass tax, we're going to tell you about how Marc Jacobs said that Mythic won't be working on an expansion for Warhammer Online until all the kicks have been worked out of the game, that the developers at Bioware are touting their story-telling prowess in Star Wars: The Old Republic, and how the Army is recruiting the creepiest people on Earth in Second Life. What's that they say about the road to hell being paved with good intentions? So put down that book, turn off the Dark Knight, and get your enlistment papers in order. This is...

The unthinkable has happened. According to Casey Schreiner, the number one spot on the short list of "Best Coffee Evar" no longer belongs to Dunkin Donuts. Children of the south, we will happily accept gifts of Jittery Joe's coffee.

This week Casey covers a wide breadth of topics, ranging from Runescape being one of the most searched words on Yahoo in 2008, Star Trek Online dropping new screenshots, the fact that replica swords are now a sound financial investment, and some questionable character art in a certain browser-based MMO. But that's still just speculation, don't take our word for it. So pour a cup of that fresh brew, breathe in the haunting aroma, and pour in a whole bunch of cream and sugar. This is...

Have you eaten yet? Good, then you won't be going anywhere for a while.

On this Thanksgiving day, we bring you part 2 of our Lord of the Rings Online: Mines of Moria launch special, giving you even more of the finer details of the first retail expansion for the only Tolkien-based MMO. We got some one-on-one time with Turbine's resident Lore Monkey, a personal tour through the mines themselves, and Casey even got the chance to become an orc. Because, you know, you can never have too many orcs around. So unhook your belt, down some Pepto, and put your chair into the fully reclined position. It aids in digestion. This is...

Oh great. They have a cave troll.

This week, Casey and The MMO Report bring you a very special episode focusing on the new Lord of the Rings Online expansion The Mines of Moria. We visited Turbine Studios to get the inside scoop on just what it takes to bring Middle Earth to life in the metaverse. This new expansion brings 10 additional levels, the Runkeeper and Warden classes, and a new Legendary Weapons system that's sure to add countless hours of tweaking and customization to your daily grind. But the big news is the Mines; a massive Dwarven kingdom that trumps any underground dungeon we've seen before. Oh yeah, and you get to chill with a Balrog. Sweet. Don't forget to come back next week for Part 2, we promise it will be worth your time.

And don't forget to add The MMO Report on Facebook. Go ahead, become a fan, we know you want to.

So pour a few pints, pack some Old Tobey, and unsheathe your Weta Lord of the Rings replica sword. This is...

Ubisoft Buys Massive for MMOs

Posted November 18, 2008 - By kijibe

Ubisoft purchased Massive Entertainment last week after Activision Blizzard put it up for sale.

The studio that made World in Conflict will help Ubisoft tap into the MMO market.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said, "Our goal there is to go first with light MMO's. They have been extremely popular for a long time in China, but are also coming to the U.S. and Europe, generating lots of good revenue."

Other MMO projects in the works for Ubisoft include one based on upcoming film by James Cameron called Avatar; and a Tom Clancy MMO (World of Tom Clancy's Six Ghost H.A.W.X. of EndWar Splinter Cells is due out in 2009).

It's interesting to note that Ubisoft is the only publisher among the heavy hitters that does not have an MMO, whereas its competitors like EA and Activision, with games like Warhammer Online and World of WarCraft, respectively, are doing better than well.

It's finally here. After all the waiting, watching, and stalking, Wrath of the Lich King has finally been unleashed, and we couldn't be happier. Consider yourself lucky we didn't call in sick today.

Whether you play or not, World of Warcraft is undeniably the most popular MMO ever, and the level of anticipation leading up to this new expansion is beyond that which you can comprehend. There were midnight launch parties all over the world last night, and we've got a ton of pictures from the one down in Anaheim. Yes, it really was that nuts.

But what do we have for you this week? A Lich King special of course. We'll clue you in on some of the details you won't find yourself for at least the next week or so, and we've also got an interview with Blizzard Production Director J. Allen Brak from when he stopped by the X-Play studios this Tuesday. Also, Casey got a haircut. Take notice. So unsheathe your Frostmourne, get off your Frozen Throne, and warn everyone you know that you won't be seeing them for quite some time. This is...

Everyone's a bit shell shocked over the election on Tuesday. As the dust settles, we're all trying to get back to our normal lives, coming to the realization that things are going to pretty much stay the same for the next two months.

But the show must go on, and in that spirit, we bring you this week's edition of The MMO Report. We'll tell you about the new MMO veterans that 38 Studios has poached from other developers, how Tabula Rasa has adjusted their camera angles, and the Dragon Ball and Shin Megami Tensei MMOs that will be making their way to our shores in the next year. We also got the oppertunity to give out some awesome action figures that were donated from our good friends over at Spawn.com, so show them some love and spend a small chunk of your dwindling paycheck on the best looking collectables around. But regardless of the news of the day, we all know what this incredible moment in history is about; Change.

It finally happened. On Tuesday the clouds parted, the heavens opened up, and Star Wars: The Old Republic was announced by Bioware and LucasArts. God bless us, every one.

On top of that, Casey drops some knowledge on you regarding the announcement of a new Eve Online expansion, how they're planning on updating combat in Pirates of the Burning Sea, and how the beautiful Mila Kunis probably plays more World of Warcraft than you do. Hard to believe, but here we are. So put That 70's Show in your DVD player, mute the TV, and get "comfortable". This is...
