New iPad Announced: Apple Shows Off Its Next Tablet

If you doubted the ubiquity of Apple products, dig this: According to CNBC, over 50 percent of U.S. households now include at least one Apple product, whether it's an iPhone, an iPad or an Apple II.

Jay Campbell, one of the people who conducted the study that found this out, explains the dominance of Apple like this:

“It's a fantastic business model — the more of our products you own, the more likely you are to buy more...Planned obsolescence has always been a part of the technology industries sales model, but Apple has taken it to a whole new level."

Head Mounted Display

A patent for a headset display filed by Microsoft may point to the future of the gaming. The patent, spotted by PatentBolt, reveals that Microsoft is working on two different styles of display-headsets. The first looks like an aviation helmet, and is aimed at gamers. The other is a smaller, sunglasses-size device that would work with your phone or MP3 player -- so more for personal use.

There are some serious technical issues to overcome with any head (or glasses) mounted display -- showing an image that close to a person's eyes comes with a host of problems -- but Microsoft's new patent indicates part of the plan for overcoming these hurdles. Below is a block of text from PatentBolt that lays out partially how the device will work:

As the human eye can't focus on images less than a few centimeters away, a compact display system may be configured to provide the display image as a virtual image--e.g., an image formed in a focal plane located more than a few centimeters from the eye. One challenge in this field is to form such an image using a compact, robust optical arrangement, which also provides suitable image resolution and fidelity

Check out the video above from Microsoft Research. It uses the Microsoft Kinect and a panning projector to take game objects and project them into your room. They call it the Beamatron, but you'll call it cool.

The Kinect basically creates a 3D model of the room, and tells the projector how to distort the image of the in-game object, and how the object should react to real-world scenery. In the video example, a projected car bumps into "walls" in its environment, and tumbles over a ramp. Neat!

Homeless Used As Internet HotSpots

Homeless men are being used as 4G internet hot spots at this week's South By Southwest festival. Marketing group Bartle Bogle Hegarty is behind "Homeless Hotspots," in which homeless men walk about wearing t-shirts advertising the name of their hotspots, then, data-hungry SXSW-goers make a donation to the homeless man and can access the internet. The homeless guy gets some money; the marketing company gets some publicity; the convention goer gets some data... so what's the problem? Well, it's a little creepy.

The idea behind the movement is: "empowerment, education, and encouragement of the client to earn an income while saving the majority of those earnings with a goal of moving to safe and stable housing," but it's not necessarily going over that well on the internet, with critics calling it Dystopian, disturbing, offensive and dehumanizing.

Apple TV Goes HD -- Apple Has Announced Apple TV With 1080p Support

Apple TV goes HD as they have just announced the next version of the Apple TV will support 1080p video. The "new" Apple TV will only set you back $99 to boot. Other changes to the already popular device include a "new streamlined user interface." The new UI is in HD too. This means you should prepare your eyes for the shiniest buttons you've ever seen.

The new Apple TV will be able to support photo streaming as well. When you take a photo on your iPhone, it can be automatically displayed on your Apple TV. Other improvements include the integration of Apple's Genius. Instead of telling you what types of music you may like, it will now be able recommend movies.

Did my sales pitch sell you? If it did, get ready to buy the Apple TV next week. You can order yours right now.

Make sure to tune into Attack of the Show tonight at 7pm ET for all of today's updates from Apple.

iPad

The next version of the Apple iPad will almost certainly be announced tomorrow morning, but it looks like it won't be called "The iPad 3." Instead, it will be called "iPad HD," according to a "developer who's previously provided reliable information with respect to things Apple," reported by CNET.

Obviously, the idea of the name is to call attention to the (supposedly) big feature of the next iPad: Its high definition screen. Previous rumors have pointed to the next iPad being a beefy, powerful machine. Rumors say that there is a quad-core processor with 4G LTE capacity.
