iPhone App Rundown

Posted August 16, 2008 - By Ty Colfax

They say you can tell a lot about a man by his apps.

Apple has opened up a wonderful can of worms by welcoming the development of anyone with time, skill, and innovation enough to program new applications for their iPhone and iPod touch. And just as they did with iTunes, they're acting as a gatekeeper between the producer and the user, and taking their share of every transaction (30%) while watching their hardware sales skyrocket.

It's an ingenious way to sell hardware: Make software, or in this case supervise the transfer of open development to the consumer, and everyone and their brother will want the manufactured device that it runs on.

The best part of this whole personal computing revolution is the idea of customization. Every user is different, and Apple has made it possible for everyone to enjoy their iPhone in their own way. Check out the list below and see where you fit in.

As of this Saturday, some airline passengers will not have to remove their laptops at airport checkpoints.

Some very special passengers….

Yes, the Transportation Security Administration has decided that "checkpoint-friendly" laptop cases are okay now.

What the hell is a "checkpoint-friendly" laptop case, you ask?

It’s one an X-ray machine can easily see through. The TSA is not certifying or approving any particular brand of laptop cases per se. Instead, they published guidelines for the checkpoint-friendly cases, requiring that they provide a clear and uncluttered view of the laptop through an X-ray machine.

Oh, in case you were wondering how far some environmentalists will go to conserve water, allow me to introduce you to the EcoJohn.

It’s a toilet that uses no water.

Yes, instead of flushing the old fashioned way, you "close the lid and a large, screw-like auger turns and carries the waste to the burn chamber where the propane burner then bakes urine, feces and paper into ashes."

Uh huh, you read that right, it barbeques your poop.

Doesn’t exactly make me want to haul one along to my next party or event. Can you imagine? “Yes honey, I’m so thrilled your parents made it to the wedding. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to take a dump and then have it set on fire. Everyone, try not to breathe for the next few minutes.”

Looking for proof of the shrinking economy so many conservatives are in denial about?  Well, look no further than long-standing music magazine Rolling Stone, which is shrinking from its 30-year-old large size format to the standard size used by most rags. Yes, as of the Oct. 30 issue, on sale Oct. 17, the classic Wenner Media monthly music bible will be just like any other mag.

“All you’re getting from that large size is nostalgia,” said Jann Wenner, RS founder/publisher/editor.

He may be right though…

The first in what will surely be a steady stream of merchandizing tie-ins with the upcoming new James Bond flick, Quantum of Solace, will be a limited edition Titanium silver Sony Ericsson C902 Cyber-shot.

The C902 slider that Daniel Craig brandishes in the flick, due this November, is just like the C902 launched way back in February. But the limited edition model that will be issued around the theatrical release also features 007-themed wallpapers, screen savers, and "spy-style" game demo....

A gallery has emerged from QuakeCon that features some pretty sweet PC case mods. Our favorite is the BBQ, but we also think you'll enjoy the Lego case and perhaps the Master Chief Case converted from a Legendary Pack helmet.

Follow the link below for the rest.

This bad boy is expected to sell out quickly, so if you're into Star Wars collectables (and we know lots of you are) - you may want to head out sooner than later to pick one up.
