Duo Pinball

The device you see above is the The Duo Pinball iPad Controller, an iPad controller that converts your tablet into pinball machine, complete with an angled presentation, flipper buttons and spring-loaded plunger. There's even a bump mechanism that lets you nudge a ball where you want it to go, and, yes, the machine will TILT if you bump it too hard.

It works with Pinball HD and Pinball HD Collection apps, probably the most-popular silver-ball games in the app store, and is blue tooth compatible, so you could play it on your phone, too.

The Duo Pinball iPad controller is $59.99 and available now.

Doctor Who fans are definitely going to be clamoring for this Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control from The Wand Company later in August. PS Vita

The Japanese launch of the PlayStation Vita has been a moderate success, with the new handheld console from Sony pushing 321,000 units in the first two days.

To put it in perspective, the rival Nintendo 3DS sold 371,000 units in the first two days. While the Vita lags behind the 3DS in terms of launch sales, the original PSP was wildly popular in Japan, so time will probably be the test as to whether the Vita's feature set will push it ahead of the 3DS.

The North American launch of the PlayStation Vita isn't until February 22, 2012. Will you be buying one?

PlayStation Vita External Battery Adds 6-10 Hours of Life To The Console

Sony has announced a new external battery for the PlayStation Vita that supposedly adds an additional 6-10 hours of life to the handheld console. The battery's capacity will be 5000mAh which is more than double the Vita's internal battery of 2200mAh. Therefore, with both batteries you'll be able to get a whopping 9-15 hours of playtime out of your Vita with this accessory.

The external battery weighs 145g (about 5 ounces), its dimensions are 70x67x22mm and it will be released in Spring 2012. The price for the battery is still undecided, but, as it's a Sony product I'd bet anywhere between $50-70 is a safe bet.

Would you be willing to throw down an extra $50 bucks or so to get additional play time from your Vita, or are you going to stick with the standard internal battery that the console will come with?

PS3 Firmware 3.0 Contains Biggest New Features For 2009, But More Updates Coming

Sony is rolling out a new PlayStation 3 model, the CECH-3000B, according to a Japanese retailer. The new PS3 model will apparently update and replace the current 320 GB PS3 systems once stock runs out. Pricing will remain the same, but some changes under the hood and aesthetically make this model at least noteworthy. Here's the rundown:

  • Weight reduced from 6.6 pounds to 5.7 pounds.
  • Power consumption cut from 230 watts to 200 watts.
  • External detail changes to power, eject buttons, LED lamps.

So no, nothing magical. Still kind of cool though, if you're a hardware enthusiast. Me, I like my good old PS3 Fat, with 4 USB ports, 60 GB hard drive, and touch power/eject. But should she die on me, this 3000B PS3 sounds tempting.

What do you think? Cool? Doesn't matter? Meh?

The Road to E3 2011: Sony Report Card

During an investor call in Japan late last night, Sony confirmed they are working on a "future platform." Although few hard details were revealed about the platofrm, this is the first official mention from Sony of these plans.

When discussing an increase in research and development costs over the last quarter, Sony’s VP and CFO Masaru Kato said:

"For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business, so for the future platform – when we’ll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that – but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there.”

Kato said whatever Sony is working on will have a different kind of launch than the PS3. The losses they have suffered on the PlayStation 3 had to do with the price of semiconductors versus retail prices. Sony has since created its own semiconductor facilities, and this mean it is "no longer thinkable to have a huge initial financial investment like that of the PS3," according to Kato.

The Verdict: Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock Guitar Peripheral

There was a point when my plastic guitar collection was reaching increasingly higher into two-digit numbers, until I scrapped almost all of them. All of them except the outdated Gibson X-Plorer wired controller for GH2 on 360, because I still think it’s the best guitar to date.

That’s why I’m happy to report that the new Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock guitar is probably closest in feel to the X-Plorer than any instrument that’s come out since. The strum and whammy bars feel comparable though, aesthetically, flames aren’t my first choice of decoration for anything; however, the design -- very in step with the graphical look of the game -- is inoffensively campy.

Final Fantasy XIII Premiere Party: Suntory Final Fantasy XIII Elixir Photos

As I mentioned in my teaser story, Square Enix announced that Suntory will be releasing a beverage called Final Fantasy XIII Elixir. This soft drink will come in a special case, limited to 30,000 units. Square Enix served some of the beverage at its Final Fantasy XIII premiere party. It's carbonated and has a strawberry flavor. Since the entire presentation was in Japanese, I have no idea what's in the drink, but I'm pretty sure mine was mixed with alcohol. Then again, maybe not -- it's so hard to tell if Japanese whiskey has alcohol or not. I kid, I kid!

Anyway, here are some photos of this  special Final Fantasy drink. Check 'em out and lemme know if you'd drink some.

Your Avatar Needs A Pax ShirtI lead an extremely creepy "clothing optional" lifestyle, but I like my Xbox 360 avatar to keep fully dressed. Just for contrast. That's why I'm happy that Major Nelson and Microsoft are giving away PAX 2009 t-shirts to avatars whose humans attend the PAX convention this weekend.

"All you need to do is stop by the Xbox table on your way to the show floor and ask for one," promises Xbox outreach guy Major Nelson. "It’s located on the 4th floor, North Lobby at the top of the escalators (across from the Penny Arcade Store.) . We’ll be handing them out on Friday and Saturday from 1p – 4p while supplies last so don’t wait until the last minute to score one."

There you have it. Go to Pax. Get free clothing. At lease in a virtual sense.

I'm a little confused by the "while supplies last" part of the offer, though. Are we in some danger of running out of digital clothing?Does Microsoft know something we don't?
