Mike Zadorojny, Content Designer on Guild Wars 2 took some to chat with us at PAX Prime 2011 about the innovative MMO's crafting and combat systems. In Guild Wars 2 you won't need a dedicated healer, and you'll be able to discover new crafting recipes on the go. Also, according to Zadorojny there will be a GW2 closed beta by the end of the year. I hope I get in!

Guild Wars 2 PvP Details -- Fighting For Glory Within Conquest's Structured PvP Mode

Guild Wars 2 is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game from ArenaNet, and while most of the game will focus on player versus environment aspects like leveling and dungeon crawling, many players are seriously getting hyped up for the player vs player (PvP) aspect of the game. Both pickup and competitive PvP were huge driving factors in Guild Wars, and each featured formats with varying degrees of organization.

According to Guild Wars 2 Game Designer Jon Peters, ArenaNet's goal is to create the best MMO PvP experience. They plan to do that by organizing the PvP formats more clearly and simply than they did with the first game.

With the way Guild Wars 2 handles structured PvP, players will automatically be set to the maximum level and will get access to all of the necessary skills, items, etc., that they need in order to put everyone on an even playing field. "This makes player skill more important than time invested in a particular character," said Peters. When you leave the PvP environment, your character will go back to the skill and gear it had in the PvE area of the game, but the game will automatically save your last PvP setup so that you don't have to reconfigure everything each time you play. Guild Wars 2 will also let you store templates for builds so that you can try out new builds or return to the builds which you like the most.

Each profession will come with a starter PvP template. Players who have never stepped in to a PvP arena before won't be doomed to failure from the beginning. For the more hardcore players, detailed customization options will be available.

Check after the break to learn more about Guild Wars 2's Conquest game type and the MMO's two different PvP styles.

NCSoft Unveiling Carbine Studios' New MMO at GamesCon

NCSoft plans on unveiling a new massively multiplayer online role playing game from Carbine Studios during GamesCom, which is happening in Cologne, Germany on August 17-21. In order to get everyone excited about the project, Art Director Matt Mocarski has posted a new blog entry with a bit of information on the visual direction of the upcoming title.

The game will be a future fantasy game, and players will see both fantasy and sci-fi elements in the world and in the gameplay. "Animated films such as Atlantis, The Secret of Nimh, and Princess Mononoke really nailed the overall look of the style," said Mocarski. "We know that our game was for adults so we studied shows like Naruto and Full Metal Alchemist to see how they balanced a unique visual style with stories that had both humor and drama. Lastly we looked at comics such as Hellboy, Battle Chasers, and Tank Girl to influence our balance of technology and fantasy."

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm

World of Warcraft got its first expansion pack in 2007 with The Burning Crusade. Wrath of the Lich King followed the year after that, though Cataclysm, the latest expansion, didn't arrive until the tail end of 2010. Another one is virtually inevitable, and a new trademark filing by Blizzard Entertainment suggests that the title of the unannounced next expansion will be Mists of Pandaria.

The Mists title could be for any number of things at first glance, but MMO Champion notes that the international codes connected with the trademark registration -- 009 and 041, for computer game software and online entertainment services, respectively -- indicate that it's not a book title we're looking at. You can read about the Pandaria region of Azeroth right here.
