The Future of MMOs: Looking Ahead At Star Wars, Titan, Firefall, The Secret World, and Beyond!

This week of Epictober is dedicated to PC gaming, and MMOs are the perennial PC-only genre. In the article below, we whip out our crystal balls and look into the future of the genre.

What's coming in the future of MMOs? Ding. Grind. Ding. Grind. Every MMO is the same old repetitive time drain. Except they're not, not even close, and it only takes a look to the future big names of the online scene to see how MMOs are changing. From shooters pitting thousands of players against each other in what can only be described as a territorial war to players working together to unpiece the mystery of the lost city of Atlantis, not one of the MMOs on this list fits neatly into the mould. Developers now have the hardware and bandwith power to set their ambitions sky-high and attempt incredible things, and that's exactly what they're doing in the name of bringing people all over the world together to play and have fun.

Some of the MMOs don't even have levelling, while others are shunning subscriptions. Three of the 10 games aren't even close to role-playing games, while seven are brand spanking new IPs. Some are set deep in the realms of futuristic space, be they with lightsabers or bunny girls, while others throw into lush fantasy worlds full of splendour to be explored. Some are set more modern-day, with players travelling all over the world to investigate the unknown or to simply take it from the enemy with big old tanks. And bless 'em, some just give you a gun and send you on your way.

And that's just the games on the list. Even outside of the 10 picks, the honourable-mentions section is so star-studded with the kind of names that get any player, be they a long-term MMO fan or no, salivating with anticipation. This may just part of a series of articles looking at the future of games, but let's face it, the future is here and it is spelt with three letters.

Dungeons & Dragons: Neverwinter E3 Preview -- Saving Throw Success!

There's some interesting news in the mix today for Cryptic Studios' Neverwinter. While the studio originally stressed when it revealed the game last year that it wouldn't be an MMO, it sounds like that's exactly what it will ultimately be when it is released next year.

Cryptic's plan has apparently changed a bit, according to IGN. The game is now being built as a free-to-play MMO with a particular focus on action, which the developer compares to Nexon's Vindictus.

HOBBITS. FIGHTING. ABOUT THE WORLD OF WARCRAFT. Of course, we're assuming that Elijah Wood and Dominic Monaghan don't mind being called Hobbits for the rest of their lives. Since it was a pretty popular film series, we're hope they don't care. Earlier this week, we gave you the pugilistic showdown between these two Fellowshippers. Now, we give you their oral arguments that went down before the swinging started.

As you can see, Dominic is on the pro-Warcraft side, and Elijah is anti-Warcraft. Which side do you fall on? Elijah? Dominic? Frodo? Merry? Sound off in the comments below, and and try and contain your Ring-gasms, Ringers. The match was presented as part of the KNUCKLE Debates at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. Sponsored by the bare-knuckle brawling film Knuckle, the debates pit friends and enemies against each other in an oral argument, and then let them settle it with their fists

Hey guys, it's Thursday! That means it's time to settle in with Casey Schreiner and The MMO Report. This week we'll discuss Star Wars: The Old Republic's release date and pricing information, Square Enix's apology for the subpar quality of Final Fantasy XIV, and admit to a fault in Uncle Casey's Mail Bag. Yes, it's a rare occasion, so savor it while you can.

Guild Wars 2 -- The Other Big MMO Launching This Year

Guild Wars 2 is jumping on the beta bandwagon as ArenaNet has confirmed that the MMO will "for sure" have a closed beta by the end of the year. According to the game's lead content designer Colin Johanson, "We’re in closed alpha right now. We’re going to go into closed beta by the end of this year. Based on the outcome of the closed beta, that will determine our open beta schedule. Based on the outcome of the open beta, that’s going to determine our release date."

Johanson went on to mention, "If we tear through the beta and everything’s super positive then obviously it’ll come out faster. And if we go into the beta process and we see things we want to change, then we have the luxury of having the time to be able to sit down and fix that stuff.”

Dominic Monaghan and Elijah Wood may have played Hobbits in the bromance film trilogy known as The Lord of the Rings, but there is absolutely no love between them here as they debate and box over World of Warcraft. Elijah's position is that the game is for losers with no social life, while Dominic contents that it's a work of art. The best way to settle this? Pugilism.

Watch the two guys go at it in the video above, where Dominic looks like he's in the throes of bloodlust. The match was presented as part of the KNUCKLE Debates at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. Sponsored by the bare-knuckle brawling film Knuckle, the debates pit friends and enemies against each other in an oral argument, and then let them settle it with their fists.

Star Wars: The Old Republic

The Star Wars: The Old Republic release date has been revealed, and it's December 20th, 2011 (December 22nd in Europe). Announced during the keynote address at the Eurogamer Expo, Bioware Docs Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk have finally made Star Wars gamers happy and their spouses incredibly sad as they lose their loved ones during the Christmas holiday. There will be an early access period for those that pre-order SWTOR as well.

DC Universe Online Shows Off Green Arrow In Latest Screens

Sony Online Entertainment has announced DC Universe Online will be going free-to-play in October for both the PlayStation 3 and PC. The massively multiplayer online role playing game allowed players to fight alongside DC Comics icons like Superman, Green Lantern, and The Joker. However, things have been looking bad for DCUO for a while now. In August the game announced that they'd be merging their servers in to "mega servers" which is never a good sign for a MMO.

"When we launched DC Universe Online, we introduced a very different brand of massive online game driven by fast action combat to PC and PS3 gamers and with that, we discovered a new type of online gamer," said John Smedley, President, Sony Online Entertainment. "We've listened to our community, and we've determined that the free-to-play model is the best fit for DC Universe Online."

Beginning in "late October" you'll be able to download and access DCUO for free on both the PlayStation 3 and the PC. There will be three ways to play the game: Free, Premium, and Legendary. All of the levels will give you access to open world gameplay and missions, but the Premium and Legendary options will offer "different game options and benefits."

Check after the break to see what each of the different memberships contain.
