MMO News

Spring is rolling along into summer and MMOs keep churning out the content. Or, in the case of SOE games, getting viciously hacked and taken offline. On the bright side, Star Wars: The Old Republic is gearing up for beta testing in Europe and has announced the game will ship before the end of the year. Hopefully. What else is going on in MMO land? Read on for the latest. First up, and still the juggernaut...

Sony Online Entertainment Apparently Unaffected by PSN Data Leak

With the PlayStation Network down, subscribers to Sony Online Entertainment MMOs haven't been able to get their fix in weeks. To prevent rioting in the streets (or at least lessen the number of angry internet posts) Sony has detailed its plans to make it up to loyal consumers. According to SOE's release, it will "likely be at least a few more days" before the MMOs are up.

Subscribers to Sony MMOs will receive 30 days of game time added to the end of the current billing cycle, as well as have one fre day for every day the system’s been down.

That's not all, though. Subscribers will also be given in-game items, XP boosts and a lot more. There's a game-by-game list under the "Read More" tag.

Lineage North American Servers Shutting Off After 10 Years

Famed massively multiplayer online role playing game Lineage is shutting down its North American servers permanently on June 29 after a ten year run as the game is "no longer financially viable in the West," according to developer NCSoft. Up until that point, anyone with an existing Lineage account will be able to play the game for free.

World of Warcraft Pre-Cataclysm Patch 4.0.3a

World of Warcraft, Blizzard Entertainment's massively multiplayer online role playing game, has become a household name over the last six years. Last October WoW may have hit its peak at over 12 million worldwide subscribers. This is following the successful launch of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, the game's third expansion pack that sold 3.3 million copies worldwide in its first 24 hours. Today during Activision Blizzard's latest financial call, they confirmed that impressive amount of players has gone down to 11.4 million subscribers. A miniscule number, really. Could it be that the MMO behemoth is finally losing steam?

Star Wars the Old Republic

G4's Miguel Conception spent several days immersed in Star Wars: The Old Republic in order to give you the inside word on the ambitious MMO. Today's preview takes a look at TOR's player-vs-player combat, because it wouldn't be an MMO without PvP, am I right? Here's a taste:

"When you spend several hours in a  'immersion day,' one would think that there would be time to diverge from the espionage and bounty hunting for some old-fashioned PvP. That’s just what I and several other game writers did recently, and while BioWare has not had a deep history of experience with the PvP format, there are a lot of reasons to stay optimistic that this mode of play in The Old Republic will hold up well alongside the game’s PvE."

Many beloved fantasy and scifi works have been transformed into MMORPGs. Lord of the Rings Online, Age of Conan, Battlestar Galactica, Dungeons and Dragons Online and Star Trek Online have all found a built-in fanbase for their offerings. Even more recognizable titles are in development including Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and, of course, a little MMO called Star Wars: The Old Republic. But what great entertainment has yet to get the MMO treatment it deserves? Here are our top three picks.

Game of Thrones, Spartacus, Robotech: Television MMOs We'd Like To See

Game of Thrones

The land of Westeros is torn apart by the War of the Five Kings, the imminent invasion by the mythical Others to the north and the reappearance of dragons in the world. Sounds like a great landscape for 5-man instances, PvP battlegrounds and 40-man raids. George R. R. Martin’s popular and ongoing fantasy book series, now and HBO TV show, has many of the elements needed for MMOs to work.

This week on The MMO Report, Casey gets super sensual and talks about some of the sexiness we've experienced over the years. So turn down the lights, slip into something more comfortable and prepare yourself for a NSFW journey through the most carnal experiences in massively multiplayer online games.
