City Of Heroes Free To Play After Upcoming Rebranding As

City of Heroes will be free to play after rebranding itself as City of Heroes Freedom, according to news from NCsoft and Paragon Studios. After the unspecified date of change, players will be separated into regular and "VIP" members. Regular members don't pay subscription, VIP members do.

Executive Producer Brian Clayton at Paragon Studios said that, "To do this, we’ve looked at City of Heroes from the ground up and focused on three ways to enhance the experience by giving our players more choices, greater rewards and the best content we've ever produced."--Read More--

The launch of Freedom will come alongside Issue 21 of the game's updates, which will also introduce a new co-op zone, costumes, power set, and enhanced character creator.Freedom will also introduce the Paragon Rewards program, which allows loyal users to purchase new power sets, costumes and more with points as opposed to actual cash.

"Through City of Heroes Freedom, we will be delivering more content to players than ever before, while continuing to expand the ever-evolving City of Heroes storyline and legacy," Clayton said.

Not a bad deal at all, especially if you've got an MMO itch to scratch or for whatever reason never got around to trying out the ambitious super powered hero sim. Yeah, those both describe me, but I'm sure once Freedom rolls around I'll boot it up. How about you?

Guild Wars 2

MMO games have flooded G4! I'm drowning under a SWTOR preview, a TERA interview video, and a WoW: Cataclysm patch 4.2 "Rage of the Firelands" trailer! And don't forget it was just a couple weeks ago we learned about Dust 514, the ambitious FPS that will connect to hugely-successful EVE Online, not to mention our eager anticipation of Guild Wars 2. All this has made a few co-workers and I wonder just what we'll be doing with our lives in the upcoming months, because it certainly won't be anything productive. I'm already starting to lose sleep since discovering and following the Star Wars Galaxies emulator project.

E3 2011 MMO Wrapup: Star Wars, Tera, Defiance, And More!

The spectacular cinematics! The eye-popping demos! The World War II booth babes! E3 may be over, but the MMO memories (MMOries?) live on. Bioware’s Star Wars: The Old Republic dominated early on with a breath taking cinematic debut and a neverending demo line snaking through the convention floor. Trion’s upcoming action MMO Defiance amazed those who got into the closed door demo. CCP’s EVE Online took their franchise to a whole new level with the Dust 514 title. For the best and the rest of this year’s E3 MMO offerings, read on.

WoW: Cataclysm shook the foundations of both Horde and Alliance forces as Deathwing, the former Earth-Warder, shattered Azeroth around them. Now, the trailer for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm patch 4.2, "Rage of the Firelands," will shake the confidence of poor Thrall, one very weary former Warchief. Why yes, I am a bit of a lore lover. Could you tell? Come, let's watch the video and nerd out together.

For a game so huge that its patches get trailers, I have to wonder: what's next? Trailers for trailers? Trailers teasing their upcoming trailers for trailers? The mind reels with possibility, and teasers for possibilities.

By now you've probably read watched tons of interviews, read countless previews, and seen more pictures and screenshots from E3 2011 than you can handle in one sitting. But what about the MMOs? Those persistent worlds that so many of us sink infinite amounts of time and effort into. Well that's where Casey Schreiner comes in. He was all over the E3 2011 show floor last week covering all the MMOs that you were wondering about. Check out this super-sized E3 2011 Edition of The MMO Report now while you have the chance!

The MMO Report's Casey Schreiner has Wakfu on the brain. He had the chance to interview assistant producer, Franko Fonseca, at Sqaure Enix about Wakfu. It's a tactical turn-based MMO in the works. Turns out they've been following Casey around for years to make a game specifically designed for him. No, I'm just kidding. Wakfu does focus on nature, politics and tactics.

Star Wars: The Old Republic

Star Wars: The Old Republic has been the MMO to watch for the past three years and marks the first BioWare entry to the market. While many have been begging for a release date, we've not had such luck at E3 2011. We did however get a chance to look at the game a little more closely, and have a preview for your hunger pains.

"To achieve this, each class has their own unique story in the Star Wars universe. From there, there are plenty of choices that will effect your specific story. So you could play the game for 100 hours with a jedi knight, then start over as a bounty hunter and have a completely different experience. "We're giving players Knights of the Old Republic 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 in one MMO package," said the demo rep."

I don't know if you could tell this, but my profile picture is of my 2009 Halloween costume: an Old Republic-era fan-fic character I made way back when SWTOR was announced. So yeah, I'm looking forward to this. Still, opinions are very heavily divided, so make sure to read the whole Star Wars: The Old Republic E3 2011 preview and voice your side!

The black market gold you buy for your favorite MMO could have come from political prisoners in Chinese houses of correction according to a disturbing report in Britain's Guardian newspaper.

Playing games while locked up is a lot less fun when you're only grinding for gold and they beat you with truncheons for stopping. The article quotes a Chinese ex-con, who paints a picture of a Dickensian hellhouse, where political dissidents are forced to toil for hours farming for gold that is then sold on the internet, where the guards and prisons profit, but the prisoners get nothing.

"Prison bosses made more money forcing inmates to play games than they do forcing people to do manual labour," ex-con Liu Dali told the Guardian. "There were 300 prisoners forced to play games. We worked 12-hour shifts in the camp. I heard them say they could earn 5,000-6,000rmb [£470-570] a day. We didn't see any of the money. The computers were never turned off."

Hellgate: London

South Korean publisher Hanbitsoft has announced that Hellgate: London will enter closed beta on June 3-5 and that it will be Free-to-Play. The hack and slash MMO which combined elements of the Diablo series as well as both feudal and sci-fi themed direction had high hopes but ultimately fell flat due to convoluted gameplay and technical issues, as well as lackluster community support and its servers closed just two years after its November 2007 release.

So it's basically a game where Cthulhu crawled onto Earth and you donned neon plate armor to shoot him in the face.

Thankfully, the game is going to be given a second chance from to South Korean publisher Hanbitsoft. It's unclear how exactly Hanbitsoft plans to follow through with the Hellgate re-release or if premium services will be offered, but fans who can't wait for Diablo 3 and need their gothic MMO fix might want to keep their eyes on this one.
