Leipzig GC 2008

We're out in the hall at GCDC '08, at a stand with a ton of monitors on it in a wall, for the Electronic Arts press conference. There are a couple hundred people here already, though it's first thing in the morning. Smooth jazz is playing to get us in the mood, and we're underway.

9:03 AM - Lights go down, and a spiffy opening video of EA starts to play. Dr. Olaf Coenen, EA Germany, introduces himself, and says he's not into giving stats, sales numbers, etc. He wants to get right to the fun of the games. Then, he introduces Peter Moore, President of EA Sports.

9:07AM - Moore says it's his one-year anniversary with the company here at Leipzig, and he's thrilled to be here. Riles the crowd, which is tough for an early morning, and jumps right in by touting the Freestyle brand, which brings us Facebreaker and Celebrity Sports Showdown. Then he notes the All-Play brand, which is represented in Germany with Tiger Woods '09 and FIFA '09 All-Play. Then, he announces that tennis is coming to EA in 2009, and will be the home of the Grand Slam events. He says the game will be quite in-depth, leading with the Wii. Wimbledon will be exclusive to this new game. Shows a screenshot of Wimbledon, which looks awesome. He then intros the Executive Producer of FIFA '09, Andrew Wilson.

Following on the recent European PS3 bundle announcement, Sony confirmed through their Playstation.Blog that the latest 160gb bundle will be arriving in North American shores this November, packed with a copy of the adventure hit, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

The new bundle will be available for $499.99. Sony mentioned that the bigger HD space will help you "build levels to your heart’s content in LittleBigPlanet". Could this be Sony's first step in introducing Sackboy as the system's new lead? Stay tuned for more Leipzig updates.

Four new fighters were confirmed for Midway's upcoming super-hero/fighting game Mortal Kombat vs. D.C. Universe. Wonder Woman will be battlin', as well as DC villain Deathstroke. Mortal Kombat veterans Raiden and Kano will be playable as well.

Mainly, though: Wonder Woman! The game comes out for the PS3 and 360 on November 11th.

Speaking of Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe, check out the below video of the game in action!

Sony's highly anticipated platformer, LittleBigPlanet, will be arriving in Europe this October 29, a day after its Japanese debut.

The title is still set to hit North America on October 21. If you planning on getting it, make sure to check out the awesome pre-order swag available. LittleBigPlanet, developed by Media Molecule, will be available for the Playstation 3.

More word from Sony's press conference at the Leipzig Games Convention: A wireless Bluetooth keyboard is coming to the PlayStation 3 controller. The full QWERTY keyboard will attach to your controller and allow for in-game text messaging and out-of-game web navigation, as well as helping you find the media you want if you use the PS3 as a media extender.

Mouse input will also be available, as well as a touchpad mode, that could come into play with future games coming out for the system.

Also, two shortcut buttons, a Communication Button and a Message Box Button, are placed on the lower part of the Wireless Keypad, enabling users to jump to pre-set features on XMB(TM) (XrossMediaBar) such as "Friends" and "Message Box" during game play. The first official title with in-game chat? LittleBigPlanet.

To our eyes, this looks like Sony is really taking steps to make the PS3 into a living room lifestyle machine as opposed to a simple game console. We're psyched.

No word yet on an American release date, but we gotta predict it'll be out by the holidays. We want.

At their press conference at The Leipzig Games Convention, Sony dropped word on a new, improved PlayStation Portable. The PSP 3000 will be out this fall in Europe. While it will look much like the current generation of PSP, the new models will feature:

  • Skype (!): Your PSP could also be your cell phone.
  • A brighter screen
  • Built-in Microphone

It will cost 199 Euros. That's $299 bucks. But the North American price may end up being different, of course.

PS3 160GB Bundle In Europe

Posted August 20, 2008 - By jmanalang

Doubling the size of the PS3's current highest HD space, Sony announced a new 160gb bundle arriving on October 31 for their European fans. This latest version of Sony's hardware will retain the same functions as its current versions, and will be available for 499 Euros (about $733 US), with several downloadable contents out of the box worth over 70 Euros.

No word yet on the new bundle's availability in North America but we'll let you know more as soon as we get the info. Stay tuned for more Leipzig updates.

At their Leipzig press conference today, Electronic Arts added Tennis to their already full roster of sports games. They also secured the rights to video game representations of the premier tennis tournament in the world: Wimbledon.

“As we look to expand the EA SPORTS brand and captivate sports fans from around the world with rich new interactive experiences, it was obvious that the renaissance we’re seeing in the sport of tennis provides us with a big opportunity,” said Peter Moore, President, EA SPORTS. “Our new tennis franchise, coming first to the Wii, will put fans right into the action and provide the excitement, tension and drama that true champions feel in legendary matches – like the classic from Wimbledon just last month.”

Although we imagine EA's upcoming, as-yet-unnamed Wimbledon tennis game will be out across platforms, the only console confirmed is the Wii. The game is Nintendo-bound, and will support the Wii MotionPlus controller.

Look for tennis greats and current masters to be included in the game, which is slated for a 2009 release.

The cast list for upcoming RTS Command & Conquer Red Alert 3 is pretty great--any game that stars Jenny McCarthy, Tim Curry and George "Sulu" Takei is doing something very, very right.

Here's the full cast list, in alphabetical order, announced this morning at the Leipzig Game Convention:

  • Gemma Atkinson (the UK’s Hollyoaks)
  • Tim Curry (Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Hunt for Red October)
  • Andrew Divoff (LOST)
  • Kelly Hu (X2, The Scorpion King)
  • Jenny McCarthy (Scream 3, former Playboy Playmate of the Year)
  • Ivana Milicevic (Casino Royale)
  • Jonathan Pryce (Pirates of the Caribbean)
  • J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man, Juno)
  • Autumn Reeser (The OC)
  • Peter Stormare (Prison Break, Armageddon)
  • George Takei (Star Trek, Heroes)
  • Randy “The Natural” Couture (former UFC Heavyweight champion)
  • Gina “Conviction” Carano (Undefeated Elite XC fighter, American Gladiators)

If that's not star-studded, we don't know what is!
