Video Streaming Comes To MLB iPhone App

Assuming you’ve been able to successfully validate your iPhone after the 3.0 firmware update, you will be thrilled to know that Major League Baseball is now offering live video streaming of out of market games over WiFi and 3G. The new service was recently added to the MLB.com At Bat 2009 app, available now on the App Store for $9.99.

When the video service officially starts tomorrow, it will offer one to two live streaming games per day, but as Business Insider reports, MLB will eventually make available every out of market game. Now, you won’t be able to watch local games (i.e. Bostonians can’t watch the Red Sox), but you can always listen to the audio stream in those cases.

This restriction is kind of a bummer for fans who love their local teams (then again, you could just watch the game on television), but for anyone not living in the city where their favorite team plays, the addition of video streaming to this already amazing app is sure to cause many a joy coma.

Anyone out there planning on buying the app now that it supports live video streaming?

One of the surprise announcements at E3 this year was Electronic Arts' plans to experiment with the growing browser-based (meaning no discs involved) gaming model with Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online. The company hasn't priced specifics, other than saying it will require subscriptions to access content, but if the model proves successful, does this lay the groundwork for EA to bring Madden NFL back to the PC?

EA stopped porting Madden NFL to the PC with the 2009 version.

"So many people that are golf fans that are still not console owners willing to pay $60 for Tiger Woods and we’ve got to figure ways to bring them into the fold of playing games," explained EA Sports head Peter Moore in an E3 interview with Billy published last week. "Knock down some barriers such as price and being at home is a barrier. And the sweet spot for me is somebody like me, whose flight’s delayed 45 minutes and I’ve sat at the gate and I’ve got a great wireless connection and off I go."

So, does that mean Madden NFL, too? Too early to say, Moore revealed, but winked in that direction.

"I mean, imagine Tiger as leading the way," he said, "and then we’ll figure out what this thing’s all about and I’m sure more sports will ultimately follow."

Subscription-centric, browser-based Madden NFL. What world we live in.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour Franchise Has Earned Over $500 Million

When it comes to golf games, EA’s Tiger Woods PGA Tour franchise is the undisputed king. And with PGA Tour 10 having been released this week on all major consoles, EA can expect to keep that crown firmly in place for at least another year. In addition, the premier golf franchise, like its titular golfing god, has unsurprisingly managed to rack up some serious earnings over the years as well.

The official numbers haven’t been released yet, but as GameSpot reports, NPD Group analyst Anita Frazier has said (via Twitter) that the Tiger Woods franchise has generated over $500 million since it began over ten years ago. Sure Grand Theft Auto IV managed to generate that same amount of money in its first week of release, but it’s still impressive, especially for a golf game.

Anyone think $500 millions sounds too high? Too low? About right?

NBA Live 10Electronic Arts just announced that star basketball star Dwight Howard is the cover athlete for NBA Live 10.

If you don't know who Dwight Howard is, you should be ashamed of yourself, at least according to G4tv.com's intern, Meg. "He's superman!" Intern Meg insisted to me.  "I think it's shameful that there are people at G4 who don't know who Dwight Howard is. Sports are part of popular culture, and everyone should know what's going on with popular culture. Whether or not you like his team, you should know he's a great athlete."

Thanks, Intern Meg. Personally, I didn't even know people still played basketball. But, just so no one will look upon you with great shame, here's some info about Dwight Howard:

  • Three-time NBA All-Star
  • Currently looking to lead the Magic franchise to their first NBA Championship
  • No. 1 pick of the 2004 NBA Draft
  • 2009 NBA Defensive Player of the Year
  • An All-NBA First Team selection the last two seasons
  • Actually wore a superhero cape at the 2008 NBA Sprite Slam Dunk Contest. Hence the "Superman" moniker.

There. Now you have learned something about Dwight Howard and about NBA Live 10's cover, so you  are no longer a source of vexation to Intern Meg.

The game comes out in October for the PSP, PS3 and 360, and features EA's "Dynamic DNA" thing that syncs your video game teams to what's happening to athletes and teams in the real world.

EA Sports

Moments ago at its E3 2009 press conference, Electronic Arts announced a newly re-tooled website. The website's new look merges the old EASPORTS.com and EASPORTSWorld.com into a single EA Sports hub.

According to EA, the site features new navigation that "places Sport at the center of your exploration." The site sports a content-rich homepage, producer blogs, franchise news, and a Media Lounge, so you can "quickly find, watch and listen to the best videos and hottest podcasts from our Community team."

EA Announces Online Co-Op For Madden 10

It's good to see EA finally getting around to innovating in ways that actually have me seriously looking forward to a new Madden for a change. While we will obviously be hearing all about Madden NFL 10’s new features at E3 next week, EA has gone ahead and revealed that this year’s game will feature online co-op. In addition, it looks as though...wait, what?! That's awesome! EA press release, tell me more please.

“Team up with a friend online to work on game strategy, practice plays, and see the field from a unique point-of-view, thanks to position-specific camera angles. Change player positions after each play to experience the NFL from a completely different dynamic. Want to find out what it’s like to play as a wide receiver on one play, and the left offensive tackle on another? With Madden NFL 10 Online Co-op, the choice is yours.”
It might not be the next-gen co-op baseball experience that I’ve been dreaming about for years, but it still sounds incredibly cool, and I can’t wait to try it out. Plus, it could actually make playing Madden online enjoyable and civilized for the first time since...ever. Now that’s innovation.

Clay Guida

According to Fight! magazine, Ultimate Fighting Championship brawler Clay "The Carpenter" Guida does not appear in the video game UFC 2009 Undisputed because the dude's hair is just too wild. Guida, (pictured above with a small woman growing from his right bicep) refused to cut his locks, in spite of requests from game publisher THQ.

It's not that THQ is being oppressive and stifling the creativity of Guida's head; it's a simple, technical issue. Guida's wild tresses caused clipping and collision detection nightmares in the fighting game, so it wasn't possible to include him unless he cut his hair to a manageable 'do. Reportedly, THQ even offered Guida extra cash if he would cut his mane, but the fighter turned down the offer.

At first it seems a little ridiculous to refuse money for simple haircut, but Guida's image depends on his cave-man like hair, and, you have to figure t-shirt and other merchandise sales would drop if it featured images of a shorn Guida. What's more common than a UFC guy with a shaved head?

Tony Hawk The Ride Skateboard Controller

It's common for peripheral-based games, from Guitar Hero to Dance Dance Revolution, to support the standard game controller, even if that's not how the game's intended to be played. That's not the case with Activision Blizzard's Tony Hawk reboot, Tony Hawk: Ride, however -- it won't support a controller at all.

"No, absolutely not," said Robomodo president Josh Tsui to GameTrailers TV, where the game was revealed last week. "I think it was always that if you're trying to design a game for a controller, you don't want to compromise by trying to design something for every type of controller, so the game is finely tuned specifically for the board itself."

Even though Tony Hawk: Ride is designed from the ground up for the skate peripheral, it seems a little silly to stop people from playing it how they're used to, but we'll have to wait and see how gamers respond later this year. If they love Tony Hawk: Ride, however, expect Activision Blizzard to incorporate the included peripheral into other sports games in the future.

"I mean, I like to think that we've created a standard for a peripheral that is board-related," said skater and collaborator Tony Hawk later in the show. "It can be a skateboard, obviously that's the intention in the beginning here, but it could also be a snowboard, it could be a surfboard, it could be a wakeboard, it could be an exercise thing."

What else could it be used for?

College football arguably has the best fans in sports. Every season the emotion that's portrayed by competing schools become legendary material. EA Sports has ramped up the ability to show your favorite school pride with the "Season Showdown" featured inside of NCAA Football 10.

"Season Showdown is a four month long meta-competition where fans battle against one another to prove whose school is #1.  The season culminates in the first-ever Season Showdown Championship.  Earn credits for your favorite school by competing online or against the CPU, or you can earn credits during web-based games, including the all-new EA SPORTS Trivia Challenge."

Here's the trailer with the lowdown, new screens and an the FAQ/press release after the cut for all the ways to be prideful on your PS3 or Xbox 360 on July 14.
