I've been playing Madden games since John Madden's Vibrating Table Football: 1974, and I love the series, so I was curious about the upcoming downloadable title Madden NFL Arcade. Cautiously curious, actually, because the last thing I thought I wanted from a football game was more "arcade-like" action... but now I'm not sure. Check out the "Game Changers" trailer below:

Madden NFL Arcade Game Changers Trailer »

Usually, I turn up my sports-sim purist nose at any in-game silliness, but after watching this video, I'm confronting the fact that I might have been wrong for all these years. The game comes out next week on he PSN and Live, so I'm gonna get it, try it, and perhaps have my mind changed for all time.

EA:

I have bad news, FIFA 10 fans.

Electronic Arts has confirmed to me they are actively aware of the significant FIFA 10 "Manager's Mode" glitch that I reported on last week, but said there are "no promises" a title update (read: patch) is coming to universally ensure it doesn't occur anymore. The game-breaking bug appears when a player switches teams at the end of a season during Manager Mode. Their new team is suddenly more than 2,000,000 in debt, essentially stopping players from continuing their management season.

"The development team is aware of the bug described in your email and on the message boards," said an EA spokesperson in a statement to me over e-mail today. "Even though our games go through many months of quality checking, some things slip through. The dev team worked on this issue in a number of situations and reduced the amount of times this issue occurs with one of the recent title updates but unfortunately we have not been able to eradicate it completely."

"There are no promises that this particular issue will be fixed for all the remaining users impacted"

G4 writer Sterling McGarvey did not encounter this glitch while playing FIFA 10 for review.

But users continue to relay experiences with the glitch in comments from the original story here at G4, in follow-up e-mails sent to me and frustrated stories on EA's own message boards. Unfortunately, if you're one of the FIFA 10 players who continues to encounter this bug, there's reason to be skeptical it will ever be truly fixed. Why? Because EA has admitted it might not happen.

"Our testing now indicates that it is random and occurs with a very low percentage of users," said the spokesperson. "We will continue to develop title updates but there are no promises that this particular issue will be fixed for all the remaining users impacted. Despite this particular problem we still believe Manager Mode is significantly improved over last year."

You don't have to be playing FIFA 10 to understand why that's disappointing to hear.

Poor form, EA.

Madden NFL Arcade

Nothing goes with Thanksgiving like a hot cup of football, so EA has chosen the holiday week to make Madden NFL Arcade available for download on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live. You'll be able to tuck in to the more casual Madden on Tuesday, November 24 on PSN, and Wednesday, November 25 on the Xbox. It will cost you $14.99 on the PSN and 1200 Microsoft Points Xbox Live.

Madden NFL Arcade takes the top five players from each team's offense and defense and drops them on the field to fight it out for football glory. To keep things light-hearted, power-ups and abilities are added to the grid-iron mix -- sports sim purists, this is not the game you're looking for. Four-player co-op and online games are supported as well.

Significant FIFA 10 Manager Mode Glitch Reported By Players, EA Currently Silent

Electronic Arts has already issued a post-launch patch for FIFA 10, but problems remain. Reader Justin Duke alerted me in the direction of a major glitch this morning that currently plagues the game's "manager mode," which allows FIFA 10 players to build a team from scratch. The problem? Once you've taken a team through a single season, an in-game economy glitch won't let you keep going.

"At the end of every season you can switch teams," explained Duke. "When looking at your option of teams it will tell you the team's budget for buying new players. In my case, the lowly team I was looking at had a budget of around $600,000. Once you pick your team and it does the scheduling, your team now has a budget of over $2 billion, and no matter what you do that number won't change. This essentially makes the mode impossible to play because you can't make any improvements to a team."

Duke isn't the only person to have this problem. It's all over the official FIFA 10 message boards and GameFAQs boards, a glitch players seem to have just regrettably accepted as reality.

"It's an MM [manager mode] bug," said one user on EA's boards. "One of many."

G4 writer Sterling McGarvey did not encounter this glitch while paying FIFA 10 for review.

Users have even come up with elaborate means of avoiding the glitch in lieu of a real fix.

"Keep your autosave on to have two save files," said another FIFA 10 player, also on EA's message boards. "Create one for the first season, then create a new one for the second season...switch back and forth between them every few games and you won't have to rewind a whole season."

There may be good reason for players to move on, too. EA hasn't acknowledged the problem. I contacted EA about the glitch this morning and have so far received no response from the publisher. If and when EA decides to release a statement about FIFA 10's manager mode issues, I'll pass it on.

In the meantime, if you've experienced this or other glitches, drop me an e-mail with details.

Ubisoft joins Shaun White Snowboarding: World Stage to the Wii MotionPlus army as their new trailer depicts the new features enabled by the add-on device. Namely, the ability to waggle yourself silly coming up with a new stunt that you can then subsequently name.

Ready the Wii-elbow-injury emergency rooms, World Stage launches November 8.

Last night was the first game of the World Series, and the Phillies topped the Evil Empire (aka the Yankees) 6-1 thanks to the hot bat of Chase Utley and the sick pitching of Cliff Lee. And while you probably didn't know who was going to win the game going into it, I already knew the Phillies had it in the bag. In fact, the Phillies are going to end up winning the whole shebang, four games to three, and Utley is going to be the MVP...

OK. So I don't actually know if that last bit is going to happen (even though I hope it does). But the developers of MLB 09: The Show -- the best baseball game ever made, and I really mean that -- recently simulated the World Series in their game, and those previously mentioned statistics were among the results. Here is the full summary of the series that played out in the game:

  • Game 1: Phillies, 12-3
  • Game 2: Yankees, 5-4 (10 innings)
  • Game 3: Phillies, 6-1
  • Game 4: Phillies, 6-3
  • Game 5: Yankees, 9-1
  • Game 6: Yankees, 6-1
  • Game 7: Phillies, 8-2

Hey! Who doesn't love soccer?! Most of America, that's who! I kid, I kid, but seriously...the World Cup qualifier is going on right now and they're totally...kicking the ball around and heading it into the goal and running around on the pitch and other things that soccer players do. Oh who am I kidding? I don't know a thing about soccer.

Luckily, our resident soccer guru Sterling McGarvey is an expert and recently, he took a look at FIFA Soccer 10 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. From his review:

By now, it’s no secret that EA has figured out the formula for building a solid soccer sim experience, but as I stave off five consecutive nights of minimal sleep to build a verdict on FIFA Soccer 10, all signs point back to a fateful afternoon in May 2007 when FIFA producers pitched me their ultimate vision: a 10-on-10 virtual World Cup filled with top-notch gamers and their real-life likenesses. With the 2010 World Cup in South Africa just around the corner, EA has laid the groundwork for it to happen, and in doing so, the team has arguably created its most triumphant depiction of the Beautiful Game in some time.

It's October, which means that the baseball playoffs are in full swing. For the next month or so, you'll get to enjoy tense games that run four hours long, feature announcers ranging from enjoyable to to incompetent (I'm looking at you Tim McCarver), and enough talk about the Yankees and Red Sox to make your head explode. If you're like me and tuned out the regular season, but have already jumped right back in, CraveOnline has a guide to get you caught up on what to expect.

  • Just in time for the baseball playoffs, CraveOnline presents their divisional series breakdowns. Well, alright, we're a day late, but you'll live.
  • FilmDrunk's latest forgotten classic is Karate Dog, and you know what, that dog sure can pull off a jumpkick. When someone coined the term "cinematic gold" this is clearly what they were talking about.

Many people don't have the means necessary to purchase a high performance sports car. Of course, TheFeed has that kind of change between its couch cushions, so we own a BMW, a Porsche, 37 Audis and a 1996 Pontiac Transport Minivan just for good measure.

But, for everyone with only 36 Audis in the garage, there's Forza Motorsport 3, exclusively for the Xbox 360. TheFeed's Brian Leahy (himself the proud owner of 45 Audis, 2 Alfa Romeos and a Razor Scooter) has the review:

"Forza Motorsport 3 improves upon Forza 2 in almost every way. It doesn't redefine the genre, but it adds enough to be a solid upgrade for car lovers and simulation enthusiasts. New features like Rewind and Quick Upgrade help lower the barrier of entry for casual players and the new cockpit cam is a much-needed franchise addition."

EA Sports' collegiate hardwood sports franchise comes a knocking for it's biggest year yet with NCAA Basketball 10. Still months away from any hint of March Madness you can start your virtual gaming season off now with the following trailer.

A quick side note, I wonder how much it would cost to hire the announcer for a day to make our mundane walks to lunch way more exciting.

TONIGHT: Kimbo Slice Fights On 'The Ultimate Fighter'

There's a big showdown set for tonight! (Okay, technically, it took place months ago, but we finally get to see it tonight.)

Amid a barrage of media hype, we've known for some time that the infamous Kimbo Slice would be participating in this season of the The Ultimate Fighter reality show, which in actuality, has become THE proving ground of the sport itself, that has generated some of the most successful and highest-ranking MMA fighters in the world. Slice, the Internet Fight King, is sort of a pardox, in that he simultaneously holds reputations as both a tough-as-nails street fighter, AND as a running punchline due to a disastrous loss which may have exposed his lack of professional MMA skill.

It is currently four days from the one year mark of the 2008 EliteXC MMA event that aired live on CBS network television, in which the heavily-promoted main event was to have Slice fight waning MMA legend, Ken Shamrock. However, fate would see it differently, as a last-minute injury forced Shamrock to withdraw, leaving Slice to face semi-obscure former Ultimate Fighter contestant Seth Petruzelli. (Who, after being cut from the UFC in 2007 after losses, was fighting on the undercard of the event.) Kimbo had been knocking out brawlers and greats who were well past their prime, and was being promoted by EliteXC as an unbeatable fighter. Slice SHOULD have ran right through Petrezelli...but he didn't. In fact, it took merely 14 seconds from a trained "average" MMA fighter to knock Slice out cold. The KO was not only a personal embarrassment for Slice, but a financial stigma that the fledgling promotion could not bear, as they quickly folded altogether in the aftermath of the fight.

Kobe Bryant & Derrick Rose Talk NBA 2K10 With Chris Hardwick

Chris Hardwick has got to be the luckiest guy here at G4. Not only does he get to host Web Soup, and contribute to Attack of the Show, but he got to shoot a commercial with the best basketball player in the world, Kobe Bryant, and someone who might soon be able to lay claim to that title, Derrick Rose, to promote NBA 2K10.

Check out this behind-the-scenes footage of that shoot, where Chris, Kobe, and Derrick talk not only about the game, but about such things as Kobe's footwork, who's the best gamer in the NBA, and what mayonnaise-based nickname might be best for Chris. Also, Kobe reveals that there are some moves that he's seen in the game that he'd like to try in real life.

UPDATE: The commercial will premiere on US television tomorrow, October 2nd, but the behind-the-scenes video is here for you now.

NHL 2K10 Wii Review

Last week, Justin Fassino gave us the review for the hockey extravaganza NHL 2K10 on the Xbox 360 and PS3, and he's returned this week with the review for the Wii version of the game:

'For the second year in a row, 2K stands alone on the Wii's frozen pond. This time out, the team at Visual Concepts stepped up their efforts on Nintendo's machine and delivered a fun-but-flawed hockey experience. Outside of several important missteps with the gameplay, NHL 2K10 is a modest success that shows some promise for next year’s outing.'

NHL 2K10 Review

It's fall, which means that the thoughts of children turn naturally to ice, pucks, and goonish defensemen taking each other off the puck with a swift forecheck. In other words, it's hockey time, and Justin Fassino has the review of NHL 2K10:

"Every September, the ice starts to freeze and skates become laced just in time for hockey season. In 2008, EA emerged as the winner over 2K in the yearly battle between the franchises, and this year it’s no different. NHL 2K10 comes up with a good effort, but ultimately doesn’t execute where it counts."
