Video Game Deathmatch Is Coming!

As you probably know, our video game deathmatch for best game of 2011 is in full flower. We're down to the final four, and we need to you to vote to help us decide which games will fight it out in the ultimate showdown.

To try and sway your opinion, G4TV social media coordinator and Defender of Hyrule, Antonio Hernandez and I have destroyed our friendship over whether Skyward Sword is a better game than Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. Read on to see how the two of us nerds duke it out in a battle of epic proportions.

STEVE: This battle is surprising. The new Zelda and Skyrim are nearly tied for votes. I think people must be confusing the titles or something. Just to make it clear: SkyRIM is the massive, deeply awesome RPG that’s practically a way-of-life. SkyWARD Sword is the latest entry in a gaming franchise that was good in the mid 90s, but has been coasting since then. I mean, I get it that fans of Ocarina of Time are coming out in droves to vote for the latest Zelda game, but come on, people: Skyward Sword is hardly even in the same class as Skyrim, and if it wasn’t for the nostalgia factor, and the intense loyalty of Nintendo fanboys, it would have been knocked out in the first round.

We've been spoiled by the latest and greatest graphics, sound direction, and innovations in gaming. Don't get me wrong. I love seeing exactly where my bullet entered that poor sap's head and being able to see the exit wound. Who doesn't? I also love being fully immersed in some of the most gorgeous environments I've seen this side of Okami. But as many of you may already know, I've got it bad for the retro aesthetic. Maybe I was born with it. Maybe it's Maybelline. Either way, I know I appreciate any title that takes us back to the classics, the days of 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit art. The systems I grew up with. These games put their own unique modern spin on what otherwise resemble games from our childhood, and these five are some of the best examples that represent the essence of retro meeting today's generation of gaming.

Jamestown

Jamestown: Legend of the Lost Colony

This indie offering from Final Form Games is a surprisingly deep side-scrolling shooter with lush, colorful environments and plenty of spunk. Its 16-bit art style is of course the main reason for its inclusion in this list. Just look at it! The manic shooter presents an alternate steampunk history where Mars is actually a British colony, contested by the Martians and the Spanish. It's a little far-fetched, that's for sure, but that's definitely part of its charm. Its pixel-perfect 2D art and sweeping soundtrack work in harmony to ensure Jamestown remains firmly lodged in your memory as one of the best modern examples of retro gaming out there. And just think – this is all from an independent studio.

Xenoblade Chronicles Coming To America As A GameStop Exclusive

Xenoblade, the fantastic Wii RPG from Monolith Soft is finally coming to America on April 3, 2012!  The weird part is that the game will be a GameStop store exclusive title, which is kind of strange since that might hurt its sales.

Xenoblade originally only came out in Japan and later made its way to PAL regions, making American gamers angry enough to start up a huge petition called Operation Rainfall (which got over 10,000 signatures) to get acclaimed Nintendo titles like Xenoblade to come over to the states. As a huge RPG fan myself, I imported the title (damn my impatience!) and I honestly think that it's one of the best RPGs, maybe one of the best games, of this generation. At the time it was a shame that it didn't originally come out in the US, but now we'll all get to play it which is great.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword has been eagerly anticpated by Zelda fans since the release of Twilight Princess in 2006. Five years later Skyward Sword is being released, consequently it will be the last Zelda game for the Wii console. The game follows a similar pattern as all Zelda games, think lots of temples and an impending evil force. Link must once again answer the call of destiny and don those sexy green clothes.

What kind of Game is it?

Skyward Sword is an action-adventure game with RPG elements, like all Zelda games in the series. The hero of the game is Link, a student who dreams of becoming a knight of Skyloft. Since the game starts in a floating city, flying mechanics become important.

Who Developed it?

Zelda: SS was developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development. Located in Kyoto, Japan, Nintendo EAD has some impressive leaders like Shigeru Miyamoto. They're best known for Mario, Zelda and Star Fox games. In the past, this studio has worked on The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
