A US-based organization has launched FuelCard.org to help drivers save money on gas by giving folks a gas discount card to a popular, nationwide gas station chain where they will buy al their gas from now on. Card holders get a 10-20 cent discount per gallon. The effort is influenced by a recently launched program in the UK. When President George Bush got wind of the program he commented, "Over my dead body." More on this as it develops...

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says that making electronic stability control (ESC) a standard feature in US cars could reduce auto deaths by up to a third, which would result in 11,000 fewer fatalities per year. The institute's numbers show that otherwise identical vehicles have a 43 percent reduction in fatal crashes when equipped with ESC. Not only were single-vehicle crashes reduced, but so were high-speed multiple-car collisions.

Volkwagen's product chief Wolfgang Bernhard has hinted that the VW Direct Shift Gearbox/S-Tronic twin clutch gearbox will replace all VW conventional automatics in the future, including transverse-mount Audis, Skodas, Seats, and VWs. Apparently, VW is having a issues dealing with longitudinal applications at the moment. Pooping birds watch out! BMW is working on a new type of paint that will make washing and waxing a thing of the past. The technology was first introduced on the BMW M Coupe in Frankfurt last year, but it's gonna take a while before it hits the streets as the paint is still being tested to measure its resistance to such common irritants as tree sap to tar to fingerprints. "It is a big technical challenge," says Timo Gobel, project manager for the Coupe. "There are many changes necessary, from the factory paintshop to caring for the finish. We have no idea yet on how we will be able to repair it."

Toyota Camry is the most sold car in the US, or so says the influential J.D. Power Initial Quality Study, who also deemed it the best mid-sized car. The big loser was the Toyota Prius hybrid, which didn't even place among the top three in the compact-car segment despite topping the list last year. Toyota said it is working on improving the way it explains high-tech features to new customers, which hopefully will improve customer satisfaction. I guess they'll get rid of last year's slogan, "Look, it's got a bunch of cool sh*t, okay! Get off my back!"

For the fourth straight year, GM's luxury Cadillac Escalade topped the list of late-model vehicles most coveted by thieves, according to an analysis of theft claims in 2005 by the insurance industry. The results showed the Escalade represented the most theft insurance claims at more than 13 per 1,000 vehicles in 2005. It also had the most expensive claims at $17,913. Pickups have become more popular among car thieves as their sales have grown, as evident by Ford's F-250/350, Dodge Ram 1500 quad, and Sebring four-door sedan large pickup trucks making the top five too.

Auto Express magazine has revealed plans for a turbocharged 100mpg-plus successor to the Prius. Toyota believes the car will combine economy, low emissions and performance at an affordable price. They'll use a lean-burn 1.8-litre turbo engine, and upgrade the THS-II hybrid system with efficient lithium ion batteries, which will allow the electric motor to deliver greater performance because the cells recharge quickly and hold more power for longer. Toyota is considering a plug-in system, similar to that used on the Amberjac Projects Prius to further improve efficiency. The socket allows drivers to top up the battery when it's parked.

Hold onto your vitamins, folks--Scientology is going NASCAR. Everyone's favorite steal-your-friends-and-suck-the-fun-out-of-them?religion based on?aliens from outer space?is sponsoring a racing team that will tour the circuit.

Now, when you go to a race, you'll have to take a stress test and pay $296 for a workbook before you can actually watch the cars go around the track. Then, they'll make you pay more money to sit in a sauna and walk on a treadmill instead of going to Las Vegas with your friends after the race is over.

Ignite your potential? More like ignite your idiocy.

Apparently, the star of the new Transformers movie will be a Chevy Camaro concept car.

Bumblebee is going to start out as a 70's Camaro (otherwise known as a bitchin' Camaro), and transform (hence the title of the movie) into a 2008/2009 edition Camaro.

I'm not even sure what that's going to?be like. Will cars hover by then? Will be be eating all of our food in pill form? Will there still be hangovers from the end of the Bush administration?

Talk about the future!

In Japan, Toyota Motor Corp. announced it is recalling more than 565,000 vehicles across nine models to replace faulty parts that could cause drivers to lose control of the steering wheel. Opps. Among the 565,756 recalled cars are Wish, Isis, Prius, Corolla, Corolla Runx, Corolla Fielder, Corolla Spacio, Allex and Ractis models made between September 2002 and November 2005. It isn't clear if the recall affected cars sold outside Japan, but one can only hope. Oops, I mean, that would be terrible, sad news.

General Motors Corp. is recalling over 30,000 2005 and 2006 model-year Chevrolet Corvettes coupes after customers complained that the roof flew off while driving the $45,000 sports car.
