Air Car by 2010?

Posted February 22, 2008 - By bleahy

Gasoline is expensive, but air is free! At least, for now... That will all change when our cars run on air and the evil air companies arise to form an empire that hoards this precious gas.

Zero Pollution Motors wants us all to drive cars that run entirely on air. They have no harmful emissions and probably top out at 15 mph.

They hope to release the vehicle in 2009 or 2010. Hybrids will become a thing of the past. Yuppies will all be driving these air cars and your hybrid won't be green enough.

Check out a video of this car in action hosted by a friendly Aussie after the jump.

Honda Has New Hybrid Tech

Posted February 20, 2008 - By bleahy

Honda is working on making their hybrid engines even better and one way they are doing this is through heat-harnessing.

The idea is to take heat from the exhaust of the engine and capture it like a Pokemon and use it to heat water, which turns into steam, which evolves into Charizard, which powers the electric engine.

The current increase in efficiency is only at 3.8% at 62 mph so they aren't quite ready to incorporate the technology into the production line yet, but onward and upward.

Blind Want Noisier Hybrid Cars

Posted February 20, 2008 - By bleahy

Hybrid cars are great for the environment (or at least your wallet), but they are ridiculously quiet when running only on the electric engine.

This is dangerous for blind pedestrians who rely on the noise that cars make to stay safe. Blind advocates are lobbying legislators to pass regulations requiring that hybrids be outfitted with a noise-making solution to help keep the blind and other pedestrians safe.

They hope that there is good solution to the problem that doesn't have "cars going down the street beeping like those little carts do in the airport," said Michael Gosse, president of the National Federation of Blind of Maryland. "I think that would be pretty annoying."

We agree.

Tesla Making Gas-Electric Hybrid

Posted February 4, 2008 - By jrmylmb

Would you pay $80,000 for a car that could only go 200 miles in one trip? The answer to that should be no, which is why Tesla, the company fronted by spaceman Elon Musk, is going to be introducing an REV (range extended vehicle) at a lower MSRP to compliment their pricey roadster.

Telsa was originally going to target the all electric auto model but as our dependence on gas and the combustion it provides becomes more apparent, the economy of a company that only sells battery powereds that don't go very far looks grim.

So, its ok to sell out your ideals if your ideals might screw your company into nothing. Still, the Whitestar is pretty dopalicious and TheFeed will be purchasing one for each of its writers after work today.

Toyota announced Sunday night at the North American International Auto Show that it will build its first plug-in hybrid by 2010.

In fact, the auto manufactuer is planning on developing a new hybrid-electric car specifically for its Lexus division as well as another new hybrid for the Toyota brand, and will unveil both at the 2009 Detroit show.

Toyota, already the world’s leader in sales of hybrid-electric vehicles, says the plug-in hybrids will run on lithium-ion batteries, instead of the nickel-metal hydride batteries that power its Prius and other Toyota models. Plug-ins can be recharged externally, from an ordinary power outlet, as opposed to the battery being recharged via power generated by its wheels like regular hybrids.

Poor people and bargain hunters rejoice: Indian car makers at Tata Motors have unveiled a $2,500 car. The People's Car features a two-cylinder engine, roomy interior, gets 54 MPGH (highway) and looks like this:

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony at the 9th Auto Expo in New Delhi, Mr. Ratan N. Tata said:

"I observed families riding on two-wheelers - the father driving the scooter, his young kid standing in front of him, his wife seated behind him holding a little baby. It led me to wonder whether one could conceive of a safe, affordable, all-weather form of transport for such a family. Tata Motors' engineers and designers gave their all for about four years to realise this goal. Today, we indeed have a People's Car, which is affordable and yet built to meet safety requirements and emission norms, to be fuel efficient and low on emissions. We are happy to present the People's Car to India and we hope it brings the joy, pride and utility of owning a car to many families who need personal mobility."

No word yet on whether a U.S. release is forthcoming. Let's hope so, though. I mean, look at that monstrosity!

During his keynote CES speech, General Motors chief executive Rick Wagoner said that by 2012, half the company's cars will use Flex-fuel energy alternatives.

"All the factors point to a convergence of the automotive and electronics industries that is literally transforming the automobile," he said.

A few hours earlier, General Motors vice president of the research and development centre Lawrence Burns told earth2tech.com that the industry needs to move to new fuel sources like hydrogen cells and ethanol because "the power grid has surplus power that equals 40% of the miles driven in the US."

Iowa resident Jane Hambleton calls herself the "meanest mom on the planet."

And she’s right.

How mean, you ask?

Well, after finding booze in her son's car, she decided to sell the car and share her 19-year-old's misdeed with everyone by placing an ad in the local newspaper that read:

"OLDS 1999 Intrigue. Totally uncool parents who obviously don't love teenage son, selling his car. Only driven for three weeks before snoopy mom who needs to get a life found booze under front seat. $3,700/offer. Call meanest mom on the planet."

French Formula One expert Guy Negre has developed a car engine that runs not on the chemical energy of gasoline, but use Compressed Air Technology, which incorporates bi-energy (compressed air + fuel) to increase their driving range to close to 2000 km with zero pollution in cities and considerably reduced pollution outside urban areas.

In plain talk that means “regular old air is compressed in ultra-strong tanks in the car. Then, that air is released through a couple of pistons in the engine, which drives the wheels.”

General Motors is going full force with its initiative to bring the dream of sci-fi nerds everywhere to life, not the one about making love to green women, the other one about cars that don’t require drivers. It’s been rumored that Rick Wagoner, the CEO of GM, will discuss the driverless car program on Tuesday, during the GM press conference.

Expect testing of the new autos to begin in 2015 for a 2018 release. Also, expect geeks with too much time on their hands to draw comparisons to such film classics as Christine, Herbie, The Love Bug and Transformers.

Pioneer made some bold claims at their press conference this morning and if they deliver, we could see a great line-up of new products in navigation systems, car audio, plasma televisions, and high-end home audio.

  • Pioneer is introducing the AVIC-F500BT, a new navigation system they describe as a "Lifestyle Integration Network Console", which is an in-car and portable unit. The device responds to conversational voice commands and comes loaded with over 10 million points of interest. The AVIC will also seamlessly control different devices like iPods and Bluetooth phones through voice commands.
  • Pioneer believes that the MP3 age has led to too much of a sacrifice in audio quality as many are satisfied with the lossy format. Their new line of single-CD players use a new technology they call "Advanced Sound Receiver" or ASR. This tech will supposedly add the missing data back to a lossy format.

Be sure to hit the jump for exciting information about their concept HDTV's.

Posted December 17, 2007 - By Frank Meyer

Nissan has your back, buddy.

They’ve got it all under control.

No, seriously.

Nissan just invented something called Intelligent Cruise Control for their GPS system, which tells the car slow down for upcoming turns, and then resume a cruising speed once the turn is completed.

So now you’re car is officially smart than you, dumbass! Hahahahahahaha!

The Burnout Paradise demo dropped today and here is the gameplay footage to prove it.

Burnout Paradise Demo Gameplay »

On the eve of introducing the GT-R, their most kickass sports car yet, Nissan and Nissan Motorsports confirmed they will not be sponsoring or officially participating in any motorsports activities in North American.

"It's not all or nothing, we're certainly reviewing it against a larger motorsports strategy, but for 2008 we're taking a pause," said Scott Vazin, Director of Product Communications for Nissan Motor Company. “[But] we'll keep a presence around the world."

Why pull out, so to speak, right before the introduction of the sweet, new whip?

"The GT-R goes on sale in June, so we're a good six months away [and] the company is considering what to do with the GT-R,” added Vazin. “Can we go racing with it? What series could we be in that would be consistent across all markets?"

Actually I can answer that: Seinfeld.
