Borderlands 2 Celebrates Halloween With SHiFT Costume Codes

Gearbox Software will be celebrating Halloween today with SHiFT codes that will unlock unique character customization skins for your Borderlands 2 characters (via Joystiq). Tune into the Gearbox Twitter and/or Facebook pages starting NOW and keep your eyes out for codes.

SHiFT is a feature built into Borderlands 2 that has so far allowed Gearbox to mass-distribute codes for unlockable Golden Keys. It also monitors player data behind the scenes. The service is still in its infancy, but things like Golden Key codes and now this Halloween promotion certainly seem to demonstrate the developer's commitment to harnessing what SHiFT can do.

Assassin's Creed 3 Video Review »

Assassin's Creed 3 is the final chapter in the story of Desmond Miles, the once-reluctant assassin, who with the help of his ancestors and the animus may be the key to saving the world. Did I mention this game takes place during the American Revolution? It's a lot to take in but if Assassin's Creed 3 delivers, it will be the ultimate conclusion to a thrilling story.

If you're worried, let Morgan Webb ease you off that ledge before you jump into a pile of hay. This game delivers and then some. Find out why in our Assassin's Creed 3 Review.

"This game has a ridiculous amount of content. There are whole portions of the game and major mechanics that I haven’t even mentioned here. There are endless collectables that you actually want to collect, like peg leg trinkets that open up pirate-style searches for hidden treasure. There are hidden forts that need to be liberated, chests that need to be looted, and citizens that need to be saved. There are missions to liberate zones in both New York and Boston that eventually let you recruit new assassins to your cause. You then send these assassins on missions of their own, or just use one of their many modes, such as ambush, bodyguard, or marksman, to make your own life easier. The naval and land based missions are all replayable with additional objectives for full synchronization. There are multiple groups that each offer side challenges, such as a hunt for Bigfoot. If you want to unlock fast travel locations, you’re going to need to explore the extensive underground tunnels. Just when you think you’ve done everything, you find more fully voiced missions, more things to collect, and more bad guys to kill."

For all the reasons you need to check out AC3, read our full Assassin's Creed 3 Review.

In the Assassin's Creed 3 story preview below, Jessica Chobot chats with AC3's Lead Writer, Corey May, about what's going on in the series now that Desmond and crew have reached the final temple. They also discuss Assassin Creed 3's new assassin, Connor Kenway, and how they managed to maintain historical accuracy within such an action-packed game.

Warner Bros. Interactive and Monolith have announced a new "MOBA Mastery" video tutorial series which will help gamers become more familiar the genre and the upcoming MOBA Guardians of Middle-earth. In the first video from the series, "Basics," you'll get an idea of how the map is laid out in Guardians of Middle-earth, learn about towers, creeps/soldiers, and about attacking the other team's base. The video is short and sweet, but does a great job of succinctly explaining your objectives and how the overall game works.

Assassin's Creed 3

Assassin's Creed 3 is out now in the U.S. for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. One of the biggest blockbuster titles of the year, Assassin's Creed 3 is the historical action-adventure game that puts players in the shoes of a new assassin, Connor Kenway, during the American Revolution from 1753 through 1783.

Throughout the game, which also wraps up Desmond Miles' story in the present day setting, Connor will interact with many historical figures. George Washington and Benjamin Franklin, to name a few. Places like colonial New York and Boston will also be fully explorable, as well as the entire American Frontier.

“Assassin’s Creed III is Ubisoft’s biggest launch ever and the most ambitious game in our history. Today, we delivered on the vision the team had three years ago thanks to the tremendous talent and hard work of the many Ubisoft studios involved,” said Yves Guillemot, chief executive officer, Ubisoft.  “They have refined the core tenets of the franchise while also implementing brand new experiences, such as naval combat, that will captivate returning fans and newcomers to the Assassin’s Creed universe.”

Here are a few links that will help you decide whether or not you should pick up Assassin's Creed 3 this week.

The walking dead

WARNING: Spoilers follow.

Like its comic book and television show counterparts, Telltale’s The Walking Dead video game tells a story about the living disguised as a story about the dead. Yes, zombies are cool, and blowing their heads off is even cooler, but after a while their rascally man-eating antics can get a bit predictable.

Instead, what fascinates most about The Walking Dead is seeing just how Lee Everett and his often-dysfunctional band of survivors carry on in the face of the apocalypse. The video game adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s acclaimed comic books is a grim, death-filled, and often depressing tale, but every so often it flashes signs of what it means to truly be alive. Sometimes, it shows that the world needs to crumble around us in order to understand what’s most important. Yeah, it’s pretty deep.

So, with that philosophy in mind, we’ve done some soul-searching and gathered together five life lessons that anyone can take away from The Walking Dead. Keep your Kleenex handy; this could get emotional.

Assassin's Creed 3

Assassin's Creed 3 is freshly in stores, introducing a new American Revolutionary War time period for the series and a whole new set of features and content tweaks to go along with it. New period protagonist Connor Kenway is a half-British, half-Native American nimble, Templar-silencing badass. His fight against the ancient order is a personal one, and it's what drives him to rebuild the assassin's brotherhood in colonial America.

For all of Connor's skills, Assassin's Creed 3 is still a huge game with lots to explore and any number of things vying for your attention. This feature is meant to help you get accustomed to the new face of the series, running through some of the more noteworthy system changes and improvements that you'll be adjusting to. You won't find any spoilers below, so read on for some tips for getting the most out of your Assassin's Creed 3 experience.

A Note About the Introduction

I'm sticking to the no-spoiler policy, but you should know that the first 5-6 hours of the game follow a very specific path. My recommendation is that you stick to the path as closely as possible, ignoring the lure of exploration and resource gathering until the main story arc really kicks into gear. Just hit your mission checkpoints, get your valuable story exposition, and move on to the next bit. If you are still curious, you can check out the first 15 minutes of the game right here. You've been warned.

It's hard to go into any more detail without offering up story spoilers, but suffice to say that it's clear enough why you should stick to the script in the early hours and when it's okay to start veering off. There's just no value in looting every corpse for cash and hunting down all of the synchronization points. When you see it, you'll understand why.

Forza Horizon

Forza Horizon players can now take full advantage of Xbox SmartGlass on their Windows 8 computers. Microsoft launched Windows 8 on October 26, 2012, and official support for the Xbox 360's second screen-oriented SmartGlass feature arrived along with it. Forza Horizon was pegged as one of the early games that would support the new feature, and a newly released Win 8 app allows you to do just that.

The "SmartGlass Experience" for Forza Horizon uses your second screen as a map of the game's open world, complete with the "locations of special items such as smashable upgrade discount signs, new race events, and more," according to the press release. I know that some map content is unavailable until you pay real dollars to unlock it; it's not clear if the SmartGlass map includes that stuff as well.

Although the Forza Horizon support for SmartGlass is exclusive to Win 8 right now, expect to see other platforms added soon as well.

Halo 4 Spartan Ops Season 1 Trailer

Spartan Ops is one of the more adventurous elements that 343 Industries introduces in Halo 4, and a new trailer gives a peek at what to expect from season one of the expansion content. Spartan Ops is a free expansion for all copies of the game that amounts to 10 weeks worth of DLC, with five co-op mini-missions plus one CG cutscene per week.

Microsoft previously revealed that the story in Spartan Ops picks up after the events of Halo 4, with the forces aboard the UNSC Infinity taking on a mix of Covenant and Promethean forces. This new trailer, posted at Halo Waypoint and shared by All Games Beta, gives you a peek at what to expect from the expansion story. Stay tuned for our review of the full game later this week.

Assassin's Creed 3 Comic-Con 2012 Panel: Five Things We Learned About Ubisoft's Latest Adventure

If you nabbed yourself a copy of Assassin's Creed 3 late last night (or later this morning, for all of us who got Sandy'ed last night), then you'll probably find a day-one patch waiting for you as soon as you fire it up. Ubisoft recommends downloading it before diving in -- as if your gaming console of choice would allow you to do any less! -- because of the many fixes it makes.

You can read the full patch notes at Ubi's forums, though beware that you'll see some spoilers there. Nothing huge, mind you, but enough that you might want to just avert your eyes and allow the patch to work its magic. The short, spoiler-free breakdown: things work better now than they did before.

The Mustang you see above is my personal dream Mustang. I designed it using the Mustang Customizer, a little app that will will come to Xbox Live on Tuesday. With it, you can trick out the paint, engine, rims and more for your dream 'stang. Users who download the app will receive items for their Xbox avatar like a Mustang race suit, hat, t-shirt or even a Mustang that will race around their avatar.

Until then, you can check out the Customizer online or download the app for iPad, iPhone, iPod touch and Android mobile, where users have created over 1.3 million custom Mustangs.

Hitman: Absolution does everything possible to immerse you in the dramatic experiences of Agent 47, including putting a huge emphasis on the dynamic audio you'll listen to during your play through. In the video below, Hitman: Absolution Game Director Tore Blystad and Audio Director Thomas Bartschi walk you through the process of creating the title's polished Hollywood-style score.

Hitman: Absolution will be available on November 20 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

Activision saw many nods of approval with its live-action Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 trailer starring Sam Worthington and Jonah Hill, so is it really any surprise that we've now got Robert Downey Jr. popping up in a live-action Black Ops 2 trailer directed by Guy Ritchie? Downey leaves behind his Iron Man armor, but he was at least smart enough to bring a jet to a gunfight.

Only one thing about this trailer confuses me. Horses? Are there horses in Black Ops 2? Or is that part of the trailer just meant to appeal to those who are attracted to blonde women riding horses? If anyone can explain, please do. Otherwise, the wait won't be much longer. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 hits stores on November 13, 2012 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC (and Wii U on November 18!).
