New Apple Patent Similar to Wii-mote

Posted by Ty Colfax - Monday, May 12, 2008 12:20 PM

Apple has filed for a patent that is shockingly similar to the Nintendo patent on their Wii-mote. It's unclear what the final use of the patent will be, and its common knowledge that giant companies, especially Apple patent all kinds of technology and developments, just so that other companies can't grab an upperhand on the big guy.

There are also references to videogame applications in the patent application, so who knows.

Leaked AT&T Memo Hints at 3G iPhone

Posted by Brian Leahy - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 1:03 PM

Similar to a memo that was leaked last year, a new internal AT&T memo could point to an upcoming 3G iPhone launch. The memo calls for employees to avoid taking vacations between June 15 and July 12 and refers to "an exciting Summer Promotional Launch."

Remember, the first iPhone launched on June 29th.

The word "promotional" could also give credit to the rumor of a $200 iPhone discounted through AT&T.

Blizzard Opens Digital Download Store

Posted by Brian Leahy - Tuesday, May 06, 2008 10:20 AM

Blizzard has just gotten into the digital distribution game with their updated online store. Currently available for online purchase are:

  • StarCraft Anthology (includes the original game and Brood War)
  • WarCraft III
  • WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne

Available shortly will be Diablo II and Diablo II: Lord of Destruction. None of Blizzard's games older than StarCraft are currently available this way and any game that never had a CD-Key will not be available. No Diablo, sorry.

What's most interesting about this new store is that gamers can register and account and link their original CD-Keys from their retail copy and get access to the digital download version (both PC & Mac). I tried this with StarCraft and after a 30-minute download using Blizzard's Updater program, the game installed.

You'll need to enter the CD-Key as usual, but the website stores the key for access from anywhere. The best part of the whole process is that the game is already patched to the most recent version.

Go ahead and register because it'll also enter you into a Beta Key Lottery for upcoming Blizzard games. We're assuming this means StarCraft II and World of WarCraft: Wrath of the Lich King.

Posted by Brian Leahy - Friday, April 04, 2008 11:07 AM

Social networking is a big thing, no doubt, but now it's gonna get exclusive. Sure, anyone can join Facebook or MySpace, but to join net4mac, you'll need a Mac.

It runs through an application so unless you're running OSX you won't be able to join.

Get going and network with other Mac-heads.

iPhone Pwnage Tool Released

Posted by Brian Leahy - Thursday, April 03, 2008 3:05 PM

The Pwnage Tool has been released. The software, which only runs on Intel Macs for the moment, will hack an iPhone and install an unlocked version of the beta 2.0 firmware, which supports applications.

You'll need to track down a copy of the beta 2.0 firmware and we can't help you with that. That's illegal-style.

All AT&T Smartphones Going 3G (iPhone)?

Posted by Brian Leahy - Thursday, April 03, 2008 1:32 PM

AT&T Mobility CEO dropped some hints that the iPhone 3G dream might be true after all. He made a statement that all of AT&T's smartphones would be 3G within the coming months.

This certainly jives with rumors of a 3G iPhone on the horizon.

The question is when and how mad will I be when I have to buy a new one...

iPhone users: Would you be pissed if a 3G iPhone dropped in the next few months?

Non-iPhone users: Would you finally go iPhone with 3G?

Apple Disputes GreenNYC Apple-Shaped Logo

Posted by Brian Leahy - Thursday, April 03, 2008 10:45 AM

Apple isn't taking too kindly to the logo for New York City's GreenNYC campaign. It's Apple shaped and Steve Jobs ain't having it.

The trademark was filed for by the city and Apple (and anyone else) was given the customary 30 days to dispute the application.

Apple did. Can Apple beat NYC?! We demand a cage match. Do you think the logos are similar enough for Apple to have a case? It's too bad they have to fight a good cause. (P.S.: go GCycle!)

Apple Sued over "Millions of Colors"

Posted by Brian Leahy - Tuesday, April 01, 2008 10:52 AM

As much as it seems like an April Fools Day joke, this one appears to be real. A woman is suing Apple because according to her the 20" iMac cannot display millions of colors as Apple claims.

She points to only 252,144 possible colors on that particular model of iMac. Really? This will probably go about as well as every other suit against Apple.

We don't think you're getting your money, Chandra Sanders.

In other news, I'm suing Skittles for failing to let me taste an actual rainbow.

Adobe Bringing Flash to iPhone Anyway?

Posted by Brian Leahy - Wednesday, March 19, 2008 10:03 AM

Steve Jobs doesn't think Flash is ready for the iPhone, but it might show up anyway. Adobe has looked at the iPhone SDK and thinks that they "can develop an iPhone Flash player [themselves]."

This could be great if it runs well as Flash is just about everywhere on the internets and if done right it would allow for the full experience of the interwebs that Apple likes to say it offers on their device.

Time will tell if the Flash player runs in Mobile Safari or as a separate application.

Google Thinks Android Will Crush iPhone

Posted by Brian Leahy - Friday, March 14, 2008 5:38 PM

Apple certainly has the spotlight right now with their recent iPhone SDK release, but Google isn't going to let them hog all the attention.

Rich Miner, who is the group manager of mobile platforms at Google, said, "Once you have devices out there from Motorola, HTC, Samsung, and so on, there's a much larger potential market on Android than for the iPhone."

"It's great that people are finally building tools so all of these third-party applications can be built and get out there, (but) there are things I saw people doing with the first version of the Android SDK that it seems like you can't do with the iPhone - at least at the moment," he said.

Let's examine this.

iPhone 2.0 Beta Firmware Cracked Already

Posted by Brian Leahy - Wednesday, March 12, 2008 12:24 PM

That was quick. Less than a week after the beta version of the 2.0 iPhone firmware was released to developers, it has been cracked and unlocked.

The unlocked firmware will run newly developed official apps, previously developed unofficial apps, and operate on other carriers like T-Mobile. This is good news for those hackers who don't want to follow Apple's lead on this.

Maybe Apple will release a beta of 2.0.1 that will disable this hack, but you can bet by the time it releases to the public it won't work anymore.

iPhone SDK Very Downloaded

Posted by Brian Leahy - Wednesday, March 12, 2008 9:39 AM

We knew the iPhone SDK was going to be huge, but apparently over 100,000 people have already downloaded the toolset.

These eager developers (or uber-nerds that like that download SDKs just to have them) are hoping to code the applications that will take the iPhone to the next level.

Gaming companies like EA and SEGA have already pledged support and even showed off versions of Spore and Super Monkey Ball at Apple's announcement event.

Unfortunately, we all still have to wait until June to get our hands on these apps.

Press release after the cut.

iPhone SDK Has Some Limits

Posted by Brian Leahy - Tuesday, March 11, 2008 10:54 AM

Apple has put some limits on what coders can do with the iPhone SDK and on the surface it appears like a move to block competition.

Steve Jobs announced that Voice-over-IP would not be supported over EDGE and only function over Wi-Fi. We don't see this is as a blocking issue, but more of a move to prevent a slow application. We can't even imagine trying to do VoIP over the iPhone's last-gen data connection.

Java and a few other programming languages got blocked, but do we really need Java on the iPhone?

This isn't really an antitrust or net neutrality issue because the iPhone is Apple's product and is a closed platform. Critics who are arguing for an open one should ask themselves if Sony would let people run Xbox Live Arcade games on the PS3.

What do you think? Should Apple let people do whatever they want with the iPhone SDK?
