Tokyo Game Show 2012

Need for speed most wanted

Chances are, you'll never be involved in a high speed pursuit in real life, but if you are, you should totally drive a Volvo and throw all your money out the window like those guys in Los Angeles did a few weeks ago. That's just a little free advice from your friends here at TheFeed.

Anyway, getting back to the business at hand, videogames are all about wish fulfillment, and when it comes to high speed chases, no one does it better than the Need for Speed franchise.

Our own Jake Gaskill got some hands-on time with the game all the way in Tokyo, Japan home of drifting and ramen. Here's some of what he had to say in his Need for Speed Most Wanted Hands-On Preview

"The last event was a long jump competition over a highway. Two giant dirt mounts sit on either side of the overpass, and you have a set amount of time to pull off the biggest jump you can. What’s particularly hilarious about this challenge is that it’s already hard enough to clear the overpass (as evidenced by the car after car sent careening into the air after smashing into its side), but because everyone is trying to jump at the same time, you end up getting into some spectacular aerial collisions."

earth defense forces 4

Earth Defense Forces 4 features all the insanely huge bugs you could ever hope for. At Tokyo Game Show 2012, Nikole Zivalich swallowed her fear of the creepy crawlies and took on spiders the size of Cadillac Escalades. Here's a snippet from her Earth Defense Forces 4 preview:

I immediately jumped into a city full of tall skyscrapers, each connected by an intricate web. Spiders the size of six Cadillac Escalades called each web home. These spiders were indiscriminately grabbing civilians and soldiers alike, pulling them up into their webs. A quick cutscene showed a new character to the game, a female with a jetback and mech-wings, trapped in sticky lair of some menacing spider. "Have no fear, damsel! I'm here to save you!"

To find out how you're going to have to take these pests out, check our full Earth Defense Forces 4 preview from Tokyo Game Show 2012.

monster hunter 4

Monster Hunter 4 was one of the biggest draws of Tokyo Game Shows 2012. The action role-playing game brings the hugely popular series to the Nintendo 3DS and Nikole Zivalich got to see it in action. Here's a piece of her Monster Hunter 4 preview:

The 15 minute demo consisted of 10 small points on a map. They ranged from grass fields with docile dinosaur-like beasts, to a barren, rocky summit with bones and dirt. The farther I moved along the map, the more aggressive the baddies became. Enemies were mainly creatures resembling raptors and other dinosaurs. Mini-boss creatures also appeared to have been modeled after dinosaurs, but these were larger and much harder to take down.

Resident Evil: Damnation Behind-The-Scenes Panel From Tokyo Game Show 2012

Resident Evil: Damnation, or Biohazard Damnation as it is known in Japan, is a feature length horror film based on the video game series. RE: Damnation boasts some of the most realistic graphics and animation available today. We've seen this tech used in video game cutscene to offer emotional, story-driving scenes but now we're seeing it being used to power an entire film.

During Tokyo Game Show 2012, Resident Evil: Damnation's director, Makoto Kamiya and producer, Hiroyuki Kobayashi, treated con-goers to some behind-the-scenes footage from the film. To generate realistic human emotions and movements, mocap tech was used. If you can't picture what mocap tech is imagine a bunch of actors in tight black suits with little silver balls over them. This tech ensures each action is documented in the computer for the animators to use.

tekken tag tournament 2

While Tekken Tag Tournament 2 may already be out for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the Wii U edition promises to add new features while bringing a Nintendo flare to the fighting game. At Tokyo Game Show 2012, Jake "Mushroom" Gaskill got to preview Tekken Tag Tournament 2 for the Wii U and took note of its new Mushroom Battle Mode and World Tekken Federation features. From his Tekken Tag Tournament 2 preview:

"In terms of actual content, Namco has incorporated quite a bit of Nintendo fandom into the game. First, there’s the Wii U exclusive Mushroom Battle mode, which not only features character growing/shrinking mushrooms and energizing stars, but also includes a remixed version of the Super Mario Bros. theme song and the energy star theme whenever a character picks it up. The sound effects of the pickups are also here. There are also classic outfits that various characters can wear. Namco has yet to confirm all of the Nintendo characters included in the game, but during my session, I saw Mario, Luigi, Samus, Zelda, and Fox."

resident evil vs

Resident Evil Vs. is a smartphone game that puts gamers in to the shoes of Resident Evil characters and has them face off against waves of human enemies. Nikole Zivalich got to test the game out at Tokyo Game Show 2012 and brought back a preview. Here's a snippet:

"When I wasn't running into the wall, I was chasing down baddies. Men in riot gear, a blond Wekser-esque man (it may have been) made up most of the enemies chasing me. Using the bullet icon to take out my foes proved to be a bit of a challenge at first but I eventually got that hang of it. Getting the hang of it happened at around the time I discovered the RPG, so I think that helped."

SE only mentioned a Japanese 2013 release for the ReMIX so far, but considering how much Westerners love Kingdom Hearts I'm guessing it will be here soon.
