Portal 2 Alternate Storyline Revealed During Valve Panel at PAX 2012

Remember at the end of Portal 2 when the companion cube get spat out at Chell’s feet in the middle of that generic cornfield? Well, until relatively late into development, that cube was going to be a turret…as in, married…to Chell. “What?!” you no doubt just said out loud to yourself, preferably around a bunch of strangers who are now looking at you with curious yet slightly terrified eyes. I know, crazy right?

During their PAX Prime 2012 panel, Valve writers Chet Faliszek and Erik Wolpaw revealed that the team had developed an entire subplot where Chell did in fact get married to a turret. Remnants of this subplot can still be seen in the game, specifically in the name of the disproportionally larger turret you might have spotted in the game, which is “the Turret Wife.”

At Pax 2012 today, legendary game designer Hideo Kojima showed off a big chunk of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. The game is open world, with vehicles, but with a stealth twist. Kojima said MGS: Ground Zeroes is not Metal Gear Solid 5; it's a "prologue."

Prologue or not, the game looks amazing. Built on the Fox Engine, the demo level shown featured a long cut-scene (naturally) that transitioned seamlessly to in-engine gameplay footage. According to Kojima, the lushly detailed demo gameplay we saw is not for next-gen systems. This is how it will look on your PS3 or 360. Although Kojima pointed out that the game is scalable to next-gen systems.

Torchlight 2 Hands-On Preview

Torchlight 2 is the kind of dungeon crawler that lets you plan out every single move you make, pick the right spells, or just lets you destroy everything in sight. For all of those gamers out there you like the taste of steel, the Berserker class lets you take on the world with little more than a couple of swords and one bad attitude.

News: Torchlight 2 Comes Out On PC September 20

We got our hands on the game at PAX Prime 2012 along with one class that doesn’t know the meaning of the word “caution.”

All of the Berserker's abilities made the class seem like a rabid dog that could absolutely crush anything that came near her. Our Berserker's main ability was Eviscerate, which caused her to tear in to enemies and make them bleed for a few lingering seconds. Hersecondary attack, Wolfstrike, allowed our Berserker to lunge at multiple enemies and deal damage to them. I preferred Wolfstrike to Eviscerate, but that's not all our Berserker had to offer.

To find out what else the Berserker can dish out, make sure you check out our hands-on preview of Torchlight 2.

Insomniac CEO Ted Price Explains Why His Studio's Going Multiplatform

PAX Prime 12 began in a strangely fitting venue: Seattle's opulent Paramount theater. Built in 1928, The Paramount was created as a showcase for the then cutting-edge creative technology of movies. Since the 20s, the theater has hosted some of the most important musical artists of the 20th century. At PAX, the Paramount's stage is a showcase for a new kind of artist working in the current cutting edge creative technology of video game. Ted Price, the founder and CEO of Insomniac games, started PAX 2012 with a speech geared toward encouraging creativity, and judging by the reaction of the nearly 3,000 gamers in attendance, the man knows his audience well.

"We are all creators," Price told the assembled Pax-faithful. "Playing video games is creating...Every time you start a Call of Duty match, it's like a blank canvas-- but you're painting with bullets," he said.

God of War: Ascension "Maegara" Character Preview »

Sony Santa Monica revealed the next major enemies that legendary angry dude Kratos will be facing off in God of War: Ascension during its PAX Prime 2012 panel: the Three Furies.

These three terrifying ladies are responsible for holding the bond for Kratos’ life, so you can imagine them being none too pleased with his decision to reject the slavery he agreed to and do his own hacky-slashy thing. As a result, these ferocious foes are on the warpath, and their primary target is Kratos.

We saw one of the three Furies in action in a super short teaser trailer shown during the panel, and her name is Megaera. This arachnid-esque beast sports an extra set of long, spidery legs attached to her back that let her move with deadly speed while also giving her a significant height advantage. She’s also quite adept at picking dudes up with one leg and tearing them apart with another, all while having enough free hands for some killer juggling or face pummeling; which suits her, since she is very much interested in introducing her many fists to Kratos' ever-smug mug. Sony Santa Monica is keeping the other two Furies close to its chest for the time being.

Whether these enemies will appear as singular bosses or throughout the campaign as simply an enemy class remains to be seen, but at least we have our first clear sense of who/what Kratos will be directing his unrelenting and ever brooding fury towards when Ascension releases in 2013.

Fuse Announced By Insomniac's Ted Price

Insomniac's Ted Price announced a new IP called Fuse. The announcement was accompanied by a lone screenshot during his PAX Prime 2012 keynote. A countdown clock has since popped up at FuseGame.com. We expect more will be revealed in 11 days, 16 hours, 14 minutes and 7 seconds, 6 seconds, 5 seconds, you get the idea.

After the keynote, Game Informer ran an article confirming Fuse was actually Overstrike. The four-player co-op game was announced at E3 2011 but has been MIA since. Fuse is also a four-player co-op game, but no other details have been announced. We'll know for sure next week!

Tekken Tag Tournament 2’s World Tekken Federation online service will be available for free to all players when the game launches on September 11, Namco Bandai announced today.

The service provides players with detailed stat tracking on every aspect of their performance, not unlike what Call of Duty Elite members receive, albeit free of charge. In addition to personal stat analysis, the WTF lets players create teams (i.e. clans), set goals, and participate in online tournaments and challenges. Did I mention it's free?

We recently had a chance to see the service in action, but you'll have to wait until next week to hear more. Trust me, if you're a fighting game fan, you won't want to miss it.

Press Start

There’s often just too damn much to do and see at PAX Prime. Regardless of what you choose to do on any given night, you’re sure to miss out on something awesome that happened at another party or event.

Fortunately, there’s one show everyone is sure to love. Press Start, a first year art show curated and mostly organized by Valve artists Andrew Wilson and Eric Kirchmer, features mixed media art from over thirty renowned video game artists. The show opens on the opening day of PAX so I called up the curators and asked them to paint me a picture of what we can expect at the show. (PUNS!)

Both passionate artists outside the realm of video games, Wilson and Kirchmer wanted an opportunity to invite other like-minded industry artists to share each other’s works. Their close proximity to the PAX (Valve is located less than 15 miles away from the Washington State Convention Center) allowed them the perfect opportunity to bring artists and gamers together to enjoy fine art.
