Hitman Absolution

Square Enix has announced an interesting kind of multiplayer for Hitman: Absolution. The game will feature "Contracts," where gamers can create and share assassination challenges with other players.

Hitman: Absolution players pick weapons and disguises, then head into one of the game's single-player levels. They then tag up to three targets, and friends have to enter the level and complete it as fast as possible.  Think of it as a game of "horse," but with murder. The reward for each contract depends on the player's speed and whether or not they've satisfied certain conditions.

Since a web video is worth eight thousand words when describing a new game mode, click "Read More" and check out Hitman: Absolution's contract mode.

Assassin's Creed 3 Comic-Con 2012 Panel: Five Things We Learned About Ubisoft's Latest Adventure

The announcement that Assassin's Creed 3 will feature naval combat came at E3 2012, and since then, we've been dying to get our sweaty hands on it. Dem ships, man!

Jake "Hornswaggler" Gaskill was the lucky guy who got to play it. He swabbed the poop deck in his Assassin's Creed 3 Naval Combat Preview. Here's a taste of how the controls work:

"I assumed control of the mighty ship and immediately got to work learning the ins and outs of the controls (Sadly, there’s no way to dual stab two ships passing next to you). The ship has three speeds, each one determined by the position of the ship’s sails. Full gets you to top speed but limits your maneuverability, half sacrifices speed for better handling, and full stop improves your aiming but makes you much more vulnerable to attacks since you’re at a dead stop."

As a huge fan of unique games and the films of Stanley Kubrick, it's my obligation to point out this amazing Routine trailer. It reminds me of some unholy combination of Portal, Silent Hill and 2001: A Space Odyssey. These are three of my favorite things, so I can't wait to see if the finished game from developer Lunar Software lives up to my huge expectations. I'm pulling for you guys.

Check out the trailer:

Routine Gamescom 2012 Teaser Trailer »

The official game description: "Routine is a first person horror exploration game set on an abandoned Moon base. Your job is to find enough data to uncover the truth behind the strange disappearance of everyone stationed on the Lunar Research Station."  There are no health-packs, no HUD, and no multiple lives -- perma-death is in place.

Yeah, I could be into that.

It comes out next year for PC and Mac.

If you weren't totally on-board with Sony's survival/horror game The Last Of Us, the just released trailer below from Gamescom 2012 should put you over the edge. This thing is intense, from the plaintive soundtrack from Hank Williams Sr., to the gritty hand-to-hand combat, to the real sense of menace on hand, to the end of the world vibe. Click play to see what I mean.

CES 2011: The Sony Keynote

Sony's presentation at this year's Gamescom show was top notch. Five new games were announced, and a ton of cool stuff was shown off from games we already knew about, but the announcement of "Cross Buy" is among the more interesting initiatives mentioned, and might be just the thing Sony needs to boost sales of the Vita.

Cross Buy works like this: Buying certain games on one system will give you the game on the other system for free. The first two titles announced are PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault. These games will be packaged with both the PS3 and the Vita version of the games in the same box.

I'm not sure if that is enough to get reluctant gamers to purchase a Vita, but it's definitely a good start.

Puppeteer Gamescom 2012 Trailer »

Sony has announced another exclusive PS3 game, Puppeteer.

The Move-enabled game takes place in "The theater of the strange and fantastic," and follows the story of a headless puppet-boy. Luckily, the boy can replace his head with different objects in the enviroment in order to progress. The heads give him different powers, and the game features a unique mechanic where the character doesn't really move, but the scenery changes around him.

Rain Announcement Trailer »

At Gamescom 2012 today, Sony announced a brand new IP, Rain, a PSN game with an intriguing concept and a cool look.

Developed by Japan Studio, Rain (working title) tells the story of a world that is invisible, except when it rains. Gameplay is art-platformer. You play as little boy who can only be seen when he's wet, so when it's raining hard, you get the full picture, but when it's not raining, you might see yourself only as footsteps in puddles.

Until Dawn Announced For PS3 -- Survive Your Own Horror Movie

Until Dawn has just been announced for the PS3. The game plays like an interactive horror film. You will play as seven characters, all good looking young adults, so you know they're probably going to die. The goal of the game is to survive until dawn, but thanks to an isolated location, an exciting script and a dark secret, survival won't be easy.

The reveal trailer for Until Dawn looked like a modern day horror film. A group of teens, or young adults, head up to a cabin to get away, and let's just say something goes terribly wrong. The final scene is a young woman in her underwear being violently pulled back into the house.

Until Dawn will feature PS Move support but that feature was not demoed on the Sony stage during Gamescom 2012.

Killzone Mercenary Announcement Trailer »

Sony has announced Killzone Mercenary for the PS Vita. They promise this title will deliver a FPS experience that simply would not be possible on any other platform.

Killzone Mercenary was announced during Sony's Gamescom 2012 press conference. The game was debuted with a live action trailer, showing a hostile world where mercenaries fight the battles soldiers never could. A few seconds of gameplay was shown. In it, a mercenary took out targets with motion controlled maneuvers. Each kill earned the player money, money, money.

No other details for Killzone Mercenary were announced.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale "Event of the Year" Trailer »

Sony's upcoming brawler, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, will feature Dante, Sackboy, Spike, and Ratchet & Clank as playable characters. The announcement comes from Sony's Gamescom 2012 press conference.

Ratchet and Clank make sense for the PlayStation fighting game but I was surprised by the announcement of Dante. He's the main character in Devil May Cry: DMC from Capcom.

Note: If we play PlayStation All-Stars together, I call dibs on Sackboy.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale will be released on November 20, 2012.

Tearaway Announcement Trailer »

Media Molequle and Sony, the people who brought you LittleBigPlanet, just unveiled a brand new game. Tearaway is a platformer that uses the unique controls of the Vita to deliver a new kind of puzzle-platformer. No word yet on a release window.

Tearaway involves you "teaming up" with a character called Iota, who lives in a paper world. You have to help him escape, and you do that by doing things like "poking" through the back of the screen, blowing on the screen, and otherwise using the new control scheme of the PS Vita in innovative ways. It's hard to explain, but easy to understand once you see it.

Gamescom, the European game show, is in full swing, everyone, and it's Sony's time to take the stage. Sony's Gamescom 2012 press conference is streaming live, beginning at 10 AM PST, and you can check it out right here.
