You probably don't remember The Last Starfighter, but it was an awesomely cool sci-fi movie from the 80's about a kid recruited to save the universe by playing a videogame. Well, there are rumors of a sequel, tentatively titled Son of the Starfighter, and those rumors are gaining steam, with a production company putting the film on its slate, and a rumored appearance by Lance Guest, who played the teen in the first movie.

We could not be happier about this development. The first movie was a whole lot of fun, and, with the advances in technical film making prowess since the 80's, a sequel could be really cool. Obviously, we will have more news as it comes, but you should see the original. It's cheesy, but it's awesome.

Clearly Namco has never read the Nintendo style guide. If they did, they would know that Nintendo is insistent upon using the word Wii correctly.

The guide reads, in part, "It is simply Wii, not Nintendo Wii... The name works best at the beginning of declarative statements." So why then does Namco declare an all-inclusive trip of winter fun without using Wii? It is a question that may never be answered.

Regardless of Wii or We, We Ski is the newest game from the publisher. It's got the Wiimote and nunchuk support for carving those nice lines in the powdery slopes. It's got Mii support, allowing you to get some air with your own customized avatar. And it's got four-player multiplayer so you can watch as your friends go flying through the fence during the downhill.

Most important, however, is the fact that We Ski will make use of the Wii balance board that comes with Wii Fit, making it one of the first third party games to use the peripheral. Namco promises a large, snowy mountain for players to explore, complete with different skiing disciplines like moguls and slalom.

The game will be out this Spring; just make sure you save some I's and call it by its correct title. Click the banner for more images.

ABC Might Pick Up 'Scrubs'

It was one of the saddest casualties of the writers strike. The veteran comedy Scrubs, which was in its 7th and final season on NBC, was sort of unceremoniously dealt with, and would never film nor air a final episode, limping off the air after all of this time. However, it looks like Scrubs might have some new life on ABC, who might steal the show from NBC, for an 18-episode commitment next season.

Further making this good news is the fact that all of the stars would be under contract for an 8th season, including indie darling Zach Braff, who signed a pretty hefty contract extension just a year ago. So, there's no official word on Scrubs yet, but ABC might just give it the sendoff that fans would want.

The world needs more Family Guy, or so it has been determined by the powers-that-be, who are readying a spinoff by the name of Cleveland, which would feature wacky neighbor Cleveland Brown who hilariously has bathtub accidents fairly often on the show.

Yes. We need more Family Guy. Just what we need. American culture hasnt quite hit it's low-water mark. Why not add some more Family Guy to the mix? See how well it worked with American Dad? Personally, I would prefer The Sorrow and the Pity: The Series to a Family Guy spinoff, but have at it.

(Anti)Energy Drink

With energy drinks all the rage these days, leave it to the syrup-slurping people of Houston, Texas to come up with the Drank, the anti-energy drink!

There’s no indication on the website as to what goes into the lethargic cocktail (hopefully not the same cough syrup that killed UGK’s Pimp C recently!), but it comes out officially on September 15 and is sure to get you to slooooooow down.

Incidentally, their motto is, “The game has changed, it's time to get low.”

I’m not sure what that means, but I dig it!

(Thanks to nahright for the tip.)

Of course, Wii Sports had baseball, and it was kind of fun, but 2K has something completely different in mind with their Major League Baseball 2K8 for the Wii. The experience is about to get all kinds of immersive, and baseball fans are going to be spitting their sunflower seeds when they see what's in the hopper here.

What new functionality? Glad you asked, rook. Of course you can pitch and hit the way you'd think, but fielding also gets an upgrade, and there's a thing called "smart throw" technology that allows you to flick the Wiimote to the right base and the throw will get there. Also, you can chug along the basepaths by moving the nunchuck and the remote faster and faster. Sure, you'll be winded, but think of the baserunning!

We can not wait. Bring it on, baseball season!

Eskil Steenberg is a gifted, and, obviously, prodigious programmer and designer of videogames. He's making a game called Love all by himself, and it's something of a mini MMO, combined with an FPS, which has to be a nightmare of a pile of work for one man. However, Steenberg isn't content to make just the rudiments of a game, no. He's got to overachieve and make it look really good.

And, that it does. It's kind of gorgeous, actually. It's sort of impressionist in the way that Okami was for the PlayStation 2, and all of the screens that we've seen are art unto themselves. We can't speak gameplay, because there isn't any of yet, but, it's definitely ambitious, and we home that Steenberg pulls it off.
