Pax East 2010

Along with heavy coats and spare pens, we're bringing along a few expectations to PAX East 2012. There will be big games to get our hands on, a few new titles we've never seen before, and we're bringing you along for the ride. Before we wake up way too early for that plane to Boston later this week, we first wanted to share with you some of the games we're excited about seeing at this year's big convention.

Jake Gaskill - G4TV.com Previews Editor

It’s that time of year again! And yes, I’m referring to my annual April tradition of doing everything exactly the same way that I do everything for the other 11 months of the year. I have a feeling this year will be especially similar to previous years, so naturally I’m pretty excited. The only major monkey in the proverbial wrench this year is that I will be attending PAX East for the frist time (“frist” is how I misspell “first” during Jake’s Crazy April-Timed Placeholder Name Event).

At the moment, some of the indies I’ll be making a beeline for when we touch in Boston are, in no particular order: Dust: An Elysian Tail (the hand drawn animation looks absolutely stunning), Super Time Force (because it looks bat-crap crazy), Kairo (sort of in that Portal/Dear Esther-ish vein of moody first-person exploration), The Showdown Effect (since the idea of mashing up every 80s/90s action hero flick is just crazy enough to work), and whatever the Twisted Pixel folks have in the hopper, just to name a few.

Robot Entertainment will be bringing its just-announced Orcs Must Die! 2 to Boston, MA from April 6-8 for PAX East 2012, offering players their first opportunity to sample the newly added co-op feature. The announcement press release touts a number of other elements as well, such as a more flexible spellbook, a new upgrade system, and an all-new campaign set after the events of the first game.

The Orcs Must Die! 2 campaign will be fully playable in single player as well as in co-op, with players stepping into the shoes of either the War Mage or the newly added Sorceress, who specializes in mind control and magic. The game's official website mentions a summer 2012 release for PC, though a tweet from Major Nelson on the announcement (not to mention the previous game's XBLA release) strongly suggests that the sequel is coming to XBLA as well.

Pax East 2010

With PAX East almost upon us, let’s take a look at some of the big games and the things you need to know before we head out to the land of Red Socks and Irrational Studios. Every year, this spin-off of the main convention seems to get bigger. Companies like Sega, 2K Games, and even Nintendo will don their wool mitts as they bring their heavy hitters to the plate as we get a peek of what makes 2012 such an incredible year for gaming.

Don’t forget that some of the biggest games at the show will come from the smallest developers. Spotlighting indie games has always been a proud PAX tradition. The cold winds of the east bring out some of the greatest games to hit the mobile screen when PAX East presents the Boston Indie Showcase. Six developers show off the greatest games you need to get your thumbs on. Why wait? The future is only a download away.

But the most important thing at PAX East this year will be you – the fans. (Also Bioshock Infinite, but we can get into that later.) With a convention of this magnitude open to the public, now will be the first time developers will see with their own eyes the fans finally get their hands on so many long awaited titles. From late night board game sessions to panels with your favorite developers, PAX East brings only the greatest to the players. We’re just here to plan out what you want to see – and to remind to bring your mittens.

Pax East 2010

Some of you might have received e-mail updates yesterday about Penny Arcade Expo East. If you didn't, here's the big news: the dates for next year's Boston-based PAX East have been officially set for April 6-8. The more religious Jewish and Christian folk among you will notice immediately that there's a pretty big conflict here.

The dates for PAX East conflict with Passover, which starts on April 6, and Easter, which falls on April 8, a fact the show's organizers are well aware of. An update on the PAX website offers a brief explanation.

"It wasn't our first choice by any means, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but we're working with the city to hopefully prevent it from happening again." If that's not enough to satisfy you, Penny Arcade's Robert Khoo offers a more complete one on the Penny Arcade forums (thanks to Wired's Jason Schreier for the link!).
