Grand Theft Auto IV

Probably the most anticipated game of the year, Grand Theft Auto IV is making news all the time, four months away from its release. Today comes word that there are new details about the layout and playability of Liberty City, and some new screenshots to boot.

Check the details:

  • The cell you saw in the trailer appears to be a big part of the game. Instead of buying weapons at Ammu-Nation you can call "Little Jakob", a caribbean weapon dealer, who will provide you with guns.
  • There is a menswear store called "Perseus"
  • The "Tw@ Café" internet Café from GTA III is back. You can surf the Internet from every computer in the game.
  • You will be able to use taxis to get around. You can watch the drive from the ego-perspective or you can skip the whole thing by pressing the proper button.
  • Every crime committed increases the wanted level. As soon as you reach a certain level a search area appears on the radar. If you escape from such an area without being spotted by pedestrians/cops, the wanted level falls back. If you are spotted by a witness, the area changes to the place where you were last spotted.

Usually, we skip "special editions" of videogames: Sure, we like playing, but we don't need to make a big deal about it. The Grand Theft Auto 4 special edition, however, will find its way into our home, one way or another. We think it will look classy on our bookshelf.

It will be presented in a customized Grand Theft Auto metal safety deposit box. The box will contain:

• An exclusive Rockstar keychain for the safety deposit box keys

• Completing the collection is a limited edition Rockstar duffel bag

With a new board behind the company’s steering wheel, Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two decided to make a detour with their organizational structure. Gamespot reports that Take-two announced today the first details of their restructuring plan to maximize the company’s profits.

According to Gamespot, the restructuring would result into four primary aspects:

  • To consolidate the company’s marketing, sales and operational functions based on what they do rather than where they are in order.
  • Label and studio staff (human resources, legal, IT) would have to now report directly to the corporate level to increase accountability.
  • Management, marketing, and business development operations of 2K Games and 2K Sports will be consolidated on the West Coast.
  • The company’s third-party PC distribution business will be folded into its North American sales operations.

Unfortunately, employee layoffs will also be part of the restructuring. Company CEO Ben Feder said in a statement:

"While the decisions we are announcing today were difficult and will unfortunately require employee layoffs, we believe these necessary actions will improve the financial and operational performance of Take-Two, leading to greater value for our shareholders."

However, despite the major changes in the company, Grand Theft Auto IV was reconfirmed for an October 16 release by executives during a conference call. This announcement will nullify any previous speculations of the game being delayed this year. Feder said he expects Grand Theft Auto IV to have a ‘beneficial impact’ on Playstation 3 sales.

Another major company change, another set of employee lay-offs. It’s a cruel world out there, but at least we’ll get some GTA IV this year to release some tension…

GameSpot: Take-Two Restructuring, Not Delaying GTA 4

The “Under New Management” sign above the door at Take-Two Interactive may well prove propitious for shareholders, but if Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter is to be believed, the new regime’s corporate clean-up efforts could impact impatient gamers in a big way this Fall.

Pachter has said that the publisher will announce at its Q2 earnings call June 11 that, among other significant changes at the company, it will delay the release of Grand Theft Auto IV by a couple of weeks.

So...what do you think? Is the $89.99 edition of GTA 4 worth it or a rip-off?

The info on Grand Theft Auto 4 keeps coming up "awesome." This info is from the U.K.'s Official Xbox Magazine by way of GTA4.net.

  • According to the magazine, GTA IV is currently 66% complete.
  • When Niko pulls out a pistol, a crosshair with a simple black cross within a circle shows up on the screen. This could be an indication of manual aiming being available in the game.
  • Niko will be able to climb and descend exterior fire escapes and some meetings will take place high in the office buildings of skyscrapers. It's said that from on top of them you'll be able to throw people off.
  • Hand to hand combat is also being reworked on for GTA IV, and will feel "much more natural" than before.
  • "Fun ridiculous" weapons is said to be in the game, because R* is not going too "naturalistic".
  • One of the radio stations includes an "Eastern European-sounding" dancing station.
  • Players will be able to change their camera views whilst in a car according to their needs. This however is said to still being experimented on, and that Rockstar want to give better control and "immediacy" to players.

No doubt this will start a morning flame-fest. Today's topic of discussion and derision: The possibility that Grand Theft Auto 4 will be gimped out due to the technical limitations of the Xbox 360.

Rockstar games' creative vice president Dan Houser was asked: "On PS3 you've got a guarantee that every machine is going to have a hard-drive and, with Blu-ray, you've got plenty of storage, whereas on Xbox 360 there's no guarantee of a hard-drive and you're working with the DVD format. Does that create limitations?" He says: "Yep."

Got that, peeps?

"To be honest with you we haven't solved all those riddles yet." Houser continued. "Both [The PS3 and the 360] have their own particular pleasures and pains."

Since eagerly awaited Grand Theft Auto 4 is slated for release on both systems, does this mean everyone gets a gimped version of the game? Or will it mean that there are big differences between the versions on each system? Time, as they say, will tell.

Computerandvideogames.com: Xbox 360 is limiting GTA IV, says Rockstar

How much would you give to be Andrew Reiner? No, he's not a famous hip and/or hop star like Bushwick Bill. He's a writer for Game Informer magazine and happens to be the one press guy in the entire world who has sat down and play an early build of Grand Theft Auto 4.

Here are some pertinent details he dropped about the upcoming title:

  • There are no planes. But helicopters are "one means" of flying in the game.
  • Main character can climb telephone poles.
  • There are girlfriends.
  • "In terms of scale, it definitely feels more like a realistic city."
  • The expanded content that Rockstar is planning through Xbox Live may offer new areas to explore.maybe a fifth borough to Liberty City.
  • the game's length "should be comparable" to all the other GTA games

Anyway, read the whole thing yourself here:

GTA4.net: Game Informer's GTA IV Q&A - the answers are in!

The trailer for Grand Theft Auto 4 is only a few minuutes long, but it has resulted in hundreds of hours of speculation. Each frame of the teaser for the upcoming PS3 and 360 game has been poured over like the pages of a holy tome. Check it out yourself:

The editors of some of the top gaming magazines and websites took a look at it and posted their speculations here.

My observations on the trailer: The time-lapse photography of Liberty City in the trailer suggest that the passage of time may be one of the major themes of the game. I'm hoping (and speculating) that GTA 4 may take place over a long period of time, and that time might be a key component to game play.

Imagine if building your crime empire took 30 years, and during that time, you could watch whole neighborhoods grow, flourish and die, with your actions affecting their development. That way, the game could have the epic scope we expect from a GTA game without a huge geographic area, and the too-big map of the last game.

If I turn out to be right, I will declare myself winning psychic of the internet.

The mysteries behind the GTA IV trailer are unraveling! Everyone waited with baited breath for the trailer, hoping that it would answer a myriad of questions and put the rampant speculation to rest. Instead, it only worked the online gaming community into an even bigger feeding frenzy.

There were new questions being asked, questions no one had definite answers to. Who is that new guy? Where’s he from? Is that New York or Liberty City? Today, thanks to an in depth preview of GTA IV in the latest issue of GameInformer, we have the definitive answer to at least one of those questions.
