Halo: Reach

Halo: Reach has a release date. The game will be out worldwide on September 14.

Halo: Reach is the culmination of a decade of Halo, a franchise that has become a global entertainment and pop-culture touchstone,” said Phil Spencer, corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios at Microsoft Corp. in a statement “Just as Halo: Combat Evolved catalysed the success of the original Xbox to define a decade of entertainment, Halo: Reach will push the boundaries for what’s possible in video games and help make 2010 the biggest year in Xbox history.”

Fight Finishes For Last Remaining Halo 2 Gamers

It will forever go down as one of the great epic gaming battles of all time. Years from now children will gather around to listen to the lobby elders tell tale of a devoted band of gaming warriors who refused to let something as trivial as the shutting down of the original Xbox Live service get in the way of their Halo 2 multiplayer and glory. Or someone will just be all, “Remember those dudes who kept playing Halo 2 weeks after Microsoft pulled the plug on Xbox Live? That was cool.”

Either way, it’s a crazy story, and it’s one that has reached its inevitable end as the last remaining player, Apache N4SIR, was kicked offline yesterday morning, bringing a close to the great Halo 2 battle of 2010.

We can't seem to stop talking about Activision lately. Thanks for making so much news lately, guys! The latest move from Activision, however, is the opposite of the Infinity Ward situation; the publisher signed a 10-year publishing deal with Halo developer Bungie. It's another five-man crew this week on Feedback, as Adam Sessler, Andrew Pfister, J.P. Shub, Abbie Heppe and myself head into the studio to discuss this massive partnership, the Halo: Reach beta and much, much more.

Feedback -- Halo: Reach Beta And Activision + Bungie Lovefest Edition »

Oh, video games! Here's what you can expect this week on Feedback...

  • Extensive discussion of Activision and Bungie's teaming, what that means for Halo, speculation about what their next "universe" might be about and its impact on -- wait for it -- Infinity Ward.
  • Activision drops the first trailer for the Treyarch-developed Call of Duty: Black Ops and we're all surprised at how much we're interested in seeing where Treyarch is going with this new one.
  • We all openly wonder who's going to go out and purchase a black Wii.
  • Adam takes some unnecessary, painfully mean jabs at Lost. Plus, we have a character from Lost make a guest appearance. Can you spot him? No, I'm not kidding.
  • J.P. Shub leads the discussion on the ongoing Halo: Reach beta and how Bungie might actually be converting some people who aren't usually into Halo multiplayer (*cough* Abbie).
  • A reader asks if we've considered, god forbid, when we might stop playing video games.

Feedback, where everyone who speaks into the mic becomes temporarily immortal.

X10 Report: Halo: Reach To Be .

Some gamers have been reporting spotty performance from the Halo: Reach multiplayer beta that launched this morning, whether it's slow download times for the beta itself, slow matchmaking, or inaccessible playlists. So far, it looks like the problem was caused by too many gamers overloading the system at once, and not by a bug or error.

New Halo: Reach Screens

The Halo: Reach multiplayer beta is live, right now, and the game has inspired reader SkinnyJr to post:

I think I can say that once this is downloaded all interwebs traffic will come to a halt because no one is going to move from their TV.

You're obviously reading this, and I'm obviously writing it, so the entire internet hasn't shut down, but I gotta ask, how come you're not playing Reach?  I'm not playing it because I'm at work, BTW, although, I'm gonna probably slip into a couple matches later today, and call it "research."

Last Remaining Halo 2 Players Rewarded By Microsoft

You know those hardcore Halo 2 fans who are still playing the game on Xbox Live even though Microsoft shut down the service a few weeks back? Well, in addition to untold amounts of gamer respect, the refusing-to-finish-the-fight-ers have also received a special gift from Microsoft: access to the multiplayer beta for Halo: Reach.

“A small band of a committed few, engaged in a battle against insurmountable odds. It's not Noble team from Halo: Reach, it's the final, passionate few who are still playing Halo 2. We wish them the best in their battle against time. Their tremendous exhibition of courage and commitment makes them ideal candidates for Noble team and therefore we are working to ensure they have everything necessary to participate in the Halo: Reach beta,” Microsoft said in a statement to IGN.
