XCOM Enemy Unknown

G4's stalwart game previewer Miguel Concepcion has his boots on the ground at Gamescom 2012, and hasw brought back a preview of upcoming RTS XCOM: Enemy Unknown. The game is meant to appeal to fans of the original XCOM series, as well as bring new converts to the XCOM fold.

Here's a little bit of our XCOM: Enemy Unknown preview:

Firaxis could have easily focused on just recreating the classic XCOM gameplay, satisfying the majority of the fans of the original title. Yet the studio also devoted time and resources to load Enemy Unknown's story mode with a ton of cinematics. From Shining Force to the upcoming MechWarrior Tactics, many strategy games feature most of their dramatic moments in brief dramatic cutaways of the battle. With Enemy Unknown, it's easy to notice that Firaxis took a lot of care in crafting its cinematics, even when characters are not in attack phases.

Until Dawn Announced For PS3 -- Survive Your Own Horror Movie

We brought you the Until Dawn intro video earlier in the week, but G4's feature editor Rob "MurderHead" Manuel was on the scene at Gamescom 2012, and was able to check out a bit more of PS3 exclusive, Move controlled survival-horror game Until Dawn.

Here's a little taste of Rob's Until Dawn preview, that gives us some background on the scary enviroment of Until Dawn.

"As you move up the winding, snow-covered road, you'll find more than just snowmen and woodland creatures along the way. As it turns out, this is an old mining town with a history. The young starlets stumble across abandoned mines that might have seen some use recently and other items that might help out your Scooby team to solve the case. As the developer pointed out, you don't need to look for any of these items to experience the story. But if you want to survive, you might want to poke around a bit."

SimCity

Judging from our SimCity preview from Gamescom 2012, the first rule of sim civic planning is: Don't put your water tower near your sewage plant. Leah "Corgi" Jackson got her hands on SimCity at the German game show, and brought back many similar pearls of wisdom.

Enjoy a brief excerpt from Leah's SimCity preview:

"I even had to place a water tower in my city to get my Sims fresh drinking water. One of the developers told me that if I would have put the sewage plant and water tower near one another it would have caused a  chain reaction of epic proportion. Essentially the pollution from the sewage plant would begin seeping in to the water which was being distributed out in to my city. If my Sims drank this poop water, they'd get sick and be unable to work because of it. Personally, I found this scenario to be completely hilarious and genius at the same time."

Borderlands 2

At Gamescom 2012, G4's Eric "EE" Eckstein got his hands-on Borderlands 2's Mechromancer class, and found its robotic pets and high-explosives very enjoyable. If you want an early look into this character class' abilities, weapons and overall playstyle, we've got you covered.

Here's a taste of Eric's Borderlands 2 preview.

"First off, the Mechromancer, a riff on the Necromancer class seen in other games. Borderlands 2’s take has her summoning a ‘pet’ as her action ability, however that pet takes the form of Deathtrap, a devastating robot that rips enemies to shreds and can be upgraded to cause explosive area attacks. While the Mechromancer’s skills are still to be honed, expect to see skill trees dedicated to boost Deathtrap as an offensive weapon, as well as other non-pet skills that yield different gameplay styles."

Army of Two: Devil's Cartel Coming In March 2013

At Gamescom, Rob "Read the effin'" Manuel was lucky enough to play Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel. One of the announcements of the game that came out of the German game show was the game's overkill mode. Here's a description of it, from our Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel preview.

"One of the new additions comes in the form of an overkill system. As the bodies begin to pile up, a bar at the top fills in until you're ready to pull the trigger to activate overkill. Either person can activate it, and you don't need to do it together in order for it to work. You run faster, take less damage, and dish out more pain for a limited time. During my demo, I usually triggered it when things got a little too hot and I needed a little breathing room. A couple of times, a good overkill at the beginning of a new area can easily clear out the enemies as they come barreling out of the door."

Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation

Jake "Tri-Corner" Gaskill like old timey music, cataloging exotic birds and Assassin's Creed 3. Instead of a review of the Louvin Brothers' Satan is Real or a discussion of his once-in-a-lifetime sighting of Micronesian king fisher, Jake has written a a preview of Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation.

The game is handheld, but you might forget that fact if you're not careful. From Jake's Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation preview:

Paddling through the dense bayou swamp, soaking up the atmosphere as we moved into position to attack our targets, it was easy to forget that I was playing a handheld AC game. A few seconds after returning to shore, I had a chance to test out the game’s counter system, thanks to a rather large alligator hanging out on the river bank. Just as the beast lunged at me, I managed to hit counter, causing Aveline to unleash a precision death blow to the gator’s noggin (Trophy suggestion: “Chomp vs. Chop”).

GamesCom 2011: G4 Presents Full Coverage Of The European Game Show

Germany's GamesCom is rife with thievery! Well... maybe not rife... but there's at least one crook there, and he/she has made off with PCs containing builds of developer Larian's Divinity: Dragon Commander and Divinity: Original Sin, forcing the team to rely on backup PCs.

Larian wants their computers back enough to be offering a $5,000 reward for their return, so if you need 5K, head to Germany and start playing sleuth. Seriously, though, if you have any information on the theft, head over to Business Hall 4.2, Booth A-16 to let Larian know.

Hitman Absolution

Square Enix has announced an interesting kind of multiplayer for Hitman: Absolution. The game will feature "Contracts," where gamers can create and share assassination challenges with other players.

Hitman: Absolution players pick weapons and disguises, then head into one of the game's single-player levels. They then tag up to three targets, and friends have to enter the level and complete it as fast as possible.  Think of it as a game of "horse," but with murder. The reward for each contract depends on the player's speed and whether or not they've satisfied certain conditions.

Since a web video is worth eight thousand words when describing a new game mode, click "Read More" and check out Hitman: Absolution's contract mode.
