Lollipop Chainsaw

Juliet from Lollipop Chainsaw is my kind of girl. She's blond, loves candy, and can kick zombie butt not just with a chainsaw, but also with cheer attacks, all while having some guy named Nick's head chained to her skirt. If that's not awesome, I don't want to know what is.

She also has a dodge attack where she playfully leapfrogs over the head of an approaching zombie, and she can use that move to set up execution moves as well. The first maxi-boss we encountered during our demo was a punk-rock zombie named Zed, who Juliet calls a "Hot Topic Sales Reject." One rule of thumb for the game is that if a zombie has a name, it means he or she is more powerful. After shoving his menu card aside (nice touch), Zed attacks Juliet with a microphone, and he'll later summon amplifiers that drop down on the stage, threatening to kill Juliet.

Be sure to read our full Lollipop Chainsaw preview from Gamescom 2011.

Binary Domain

In Binary Domain it's your job to command a squad and take out robotic threats in Tokyo circa 2080. One of the newest mechanics announced for SEGA's third person shooter was the consequence system. This system will determine what your squadmates will do based on how much they like you.

"This means they'll do things like come over and revive you if you're downed, offer you cover when you're doing your own thing, and will work together in tandem to follow your directions. The game also has a novel interface that allows you to issue these commands via headset, allowing you to talk directly to your squadmates. "Cover me!" might illicit a "No way," or an "On my way!" depending on what they currently think about you. You can even tell them "I love you," which isn't exactly the sort of thing you'd toss out in the midst of a firefight."

As your squad leader I order you to go and read our entire Binary Domain preview from Gamescom 2011.

At Gamescom 2011 we had the chance to check out the upcoming pseudo-sequel to Warhawk from Lightbox Interactive, Starhawk. Starhawk is a gorgeous futuristic flight sim and third person shooter in one, and this time around Sinan Kubba got to check out just how important the Hawks can be in the new Orbital multiplayer map.

"The Orbital map is made up of a number of floating platforms which are orbiting around the vast brown planet below. There is nothing interconnecting these relatively tiny platforms, so the emphasis is on using the Build & Battle system to spawn the launch pad required to generate the flame-powered Hawks. We also saw how the communication tower, which in the single-player calls AI units to come help, will transform in the multiplayer to a spawn point, and how in Orbital this becomes a fundamental part of establishing a foothold on these island-like platforms."

Batman: Arkham City Challenge Modes

After you spend over 40 hours playing Batman: Arkham City, Rocksteady wanted to include something else to keep fans hooked into the superhero action game with its multiplayer challenge mode. Challenge mode is where you'll get to play as iconic heroes or anti-heroes from the Batman Universe, like Robin, in fun little minigames. Each character has their own strengths and weaknesses, as Kevin Kelly points out in his preview:

"Moving on to the final challenge, Catwoman and Batman both raced from one point in the city to another, although Dax underscored the fact that this is not a mode in the game. Although after watching it, I sure wish it was. Both of them had to move through the city as quickly as they could, finally getting to the top of a Ferris wheel on the edge of the city. This is where Batman pulls ahead, showing off his new Grapple Boost ability that allows him to use the Grapple Gun while gliding to give himself a boost up and over obstacles."

Star Wars: The Old Republic Preview -- Introducing Huttball and Operation Eternity Vault

Star Wars The Old Republic is still currently slated for a 2011 release, but as of PAX last weekend we still don't have a release date. Regardless, at Gamescom 2011 we got a glimpse at BioWare's MMO masterpiece once again, and got to go in depth with the game's PVP and raid mechanics with Huttball and Operation Eternity Vault.

First there was the reveal of a new PVP warzone called Huttball. It was presented like a mix between American football and Rollerball, with players using their powers, however violent or devastating, to attain victory. The idea: grab an energy ball and pass and run it over the opposition’s outside line to score a goal. Curiously, at least to those more invested in the Star Wars canon than your author, the teams were mixed, meaning Siths could be paired against each other, as could Jedis.

Be sure to read our entire Star Wars: The Old Republic preview from Gamescom 2011 to learn more about Operation Eternity Vault, the end game level 50 raid.

Borderlands 2 is like that coy girl you had a crush on during high school. You kept wanting to know about her, but frustratingly you'd only learn that "She really loves Hanson" from her friends at lunch. Which got you nowhere. Wait, what am I talking about? Oh yeah, Borderlands 2. Well, we got to check out the game in Germany, and we learned quite a few things. One of which, you'll be happy to learn, is that Gearbox wants this to be "a true sequel" and not just a content dump.

"Gearbox's Steve Gibson explained that it's great when people want more of a game, but often developers just pack a bunch of new levels together, put a 2 on the box, and call it a sequel. To him, that feels more like a glorified expansion, and internally they refer to games like that as "content dumps." Gearbox didn't want B2 to be any sort of a dump, so they've spent a lot of time making sure it feels like a sequel. They're calling it a "true 2.0," which means they've revamped everything in the game from the UI, to the co-op, to the gun system. They've been working on it since 2009, and it's a "truly ambitious sequel."

Check out the rest of our experience in my hands-off Borderlands 2 preview (literally, they played it five feet in front of me!) from gamescom, and start the nearly eternal wait for the game to come out.
