The Road to E3 2011: Nintendo Report Card

With one newly launched platform (the 3DS), and a mysterious new console on the way (which is set for a grand unveiling at the show), Nintendo has a particularly exciting E3 2011 ahead. It’s been a good year for the publisher, though sales of the ultra-successful Wii are slowing down after a stellar five-and-a-half year run – creating fertile ground for a successor. The 3DS, still technically in its “launch window”, has plenty to prove, and the prospect of several juicy new titles in favorite franchises like Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid and even good old Kid Icarus is whetting appetites left and right.

But enough about the future – let’s now dial things back one year and see how the big N fared at E3 2010.

3DS

Nintendo has announced they will be opening 3DS hot spots in Best Buy stores across the country. The hotspot's main purpose will be to demo SpotPass to customers. 1,000 Best Buys will be launching their 3DS wifi zones on June 7. The hotspot kiosks will also offer customers additional content like 3D trailers.

Do people bring their 3DS with them when they go shopping? I wonder how many customers will have their 3DS on them to take advantage of SpotPass.

Is That An Xbox 360 Slim In Your Pocket...

Along with some fun box art pictures a bunch of new details have surfaced around the new gorgeously designed Rayman title, Rayman Origins. The title was originally slated as a downloadable game, but according to the June issue of Game Informer, the heavily stylized platformer has been developed into a full title much to the joy of fans. Origins is being designed by Michael Ancel who has worked on previous Rayman titles and Beyond Good & Evil.

E3 2010 Ubisoft Press Conference: Rayman: Origins »

The game sounds really interesting, integrating new ideas to platformers like "I Dare You" challenges where you'll wager whether or not you can complete complex tasks. You'll also to be able to collect Lums (yay Lums) and then spend them to get more power ups and health. Rayman Origins will also feature up to four-player multiplayer.

Rayman Origins is currently scheduled for a holiday 2011 release for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and the Nintendo DS.

Green Lantern

We can all agree that generally movies don't translate too well in to videogames, but for once we might be wrong. Kevin Kelly recently got his hands on Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters, the videogame based off the Green Lantern movie, and seemed pleasantly surprised by the story and combat. Green Lantern the videogame will take place after the events in the movie and take place on the Green Lanterns' home planet of Oa.

"Obviously, the heart of Green Lantern are the willpower based attacks, which are meant to be an extension of his will. Anything he can think of, he can create via the ring’s power. In the game, these take the form of hard light constructs, and range from giant baseball bats, to Gatling guns, to mech-styled power armor. You summon these by pulling on the left or right triggers, which pulls up a four-button map representing which constructs you have assigned to each of the buttons for each trigger."

To read even more about Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters be sure to check out the rest of Kevin's hands-on preview.

Need the info on possible future hardware releases? He's your guy. Wondering about what the PlayStation Network outage might mean long-term for Sony? That's a softball. Kingdom Hearts 3 release date? He's probably not going to be able to field that one.

We'll think up some more questions, in addition to those, but we want your queries as well. This is Feedback after all, where we want to put you in the picture. Just hit us in the comments below, and look for your question to be read on-air next week!

Need For Speed: The Run Release Date AnnouncedThis morning, Electronic Arts announced Need for Speed: The Run, a racing game planned for a release on November 15 on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PC and Nintendo DS. Promising a "heart-pounding cross-country race from San Francisco to New York," Need for Speed: The Run aims to "take the action racing genre to new heights with stunning visuals and car physics that hug the road even at top speeds all built around a gripping storyline."

“This is the year that Need for Speed goes to the next level,” said Jason DeLong, Executive Producer at EA. “We think that Need for Speed The Run is going to surprise people with its intense, thrilling story and big action feel. But the game would be nothing without hot cars and crazy-fast chases. So that is what we’re delivering -- explosive racing that will have players flirting with disaster at 200-miles an hour.”

Below the cut, please enjoy the official description of the game from the press release, a press release that is heavy on in-your-face verbiage.
