Aliens: Infestation Arrives In The US On October 11

I've been carrying a torch for Aliens: Infestation for awhile now. As you should too, as the Nintendo DS game mashes the Aliens franchise together with a unique take on Metroidvania gameplay.

Death in the game is permanent for whichever Marine bites the dust, but there are 20 individual soldiers in the game (19 are playable), some of whom need to be found and added to your squad. WayForward Technologies put a lot of effort into creating backstories for each of these characters, a process explored in a new dev diary.

This news falls squarely into a little category I like to call "awesome." Remember the scene from Aliens in which Lance Henriksen scares the crap out of a dopey Bill Paxton by stabbing between his fingers with a knife? No need, it's right up top. Well that's going to be in Sega and Wayforward Technologies' upcoming Aliens: Infestation for Nintendo DS, out October 11.

The knife trick will be featured as a touchscreen minigame in the Metroidvania-styled Aliens outing, not to be confused with the Aliens: Colonial Marines console (and PC) game from Gearbox, which should be coming next year. The news comes from TinyCartridge, which spotted the reveal in the latest issue of Official Nintendo Magazine.

LEGO Harry Potter Years 5-7 Release Date Announced

Warner Bros. has announced the release date of LEGO Harry Potter Years 5-7. The end of the adorable yet more mature version of the Potter story is coming out for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PSP, DS, and Nintendo 3DS on November 15.

The game will whisk you away to familiar locations from books 5-7 Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince and The Deathly Hallows, including Grimmauld Place, the Ministry of Magic and Godric's Hollow. If you want to check out the game early on the PlayStation 3, The Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 Blu-ray combo pack will come with a demo on November 11.

There are few games out there that are as charming (ha, get it?) as LEGO Harry Potter. I love every single thing about the first one in the series, LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4, and can't wait to get my hands on this one. I love seeing how the story plays out in LEGOs, and I can't wait to collect all the studs. Will you be picking up LEGO Harry Potter Years 5-7?

How To Become A Video Game Journalist

Want to be a video game journalist? I'll let you in on a little secret. Even professional video game journalists don't know how to define “video game journalist,” because we do so many different things. We're reviewers, critics, previewers, live event reporters, bloggers, interviewers, and columnists. If you want the gig full-time, you should be prepared to write all of the above.

Most outlets have plenty of established writers to fulfill those roles, so it can be difficult to break in writing this sort of material unless you already have connections. There's one kind of games writing that's always in demand, however: features. If you can consistently write solid, well-researched features with unique angles, you will find work in this business, and once you have a reputation as a dependable feature writer, it's just a matter of waiting for the right position to open up.

So rather than give you vague advice about how to do the whole job, that no one is able to define in the first place, I'm going to tell you how to get into writing features. If you can jump that hurdle, you'll be well on your way.

world ends with you nekuAccording to a report from Siliconera, Neku from the amazing Nintendo DS title The World Ends With You will be featured in the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. That is so freaking awesome!

Up until now Kingdom Hearts has only included characters from the Final Fantasy series and Disney characters, so to see the development team stepping out and expanding to other amazing Square Enix games is very welcome. Like Kingdom Hearts, TWEWY was also conceptualized by Tetsuya Nomura, so it's not too much of a step outside of their comfort zone.

We're not sure to what length Neku will be included in the game, but from what Siliconera played in their Tokyo Game Show demo you'll meet Neku in Traverse Town with Sora as he's trying to find his old buddy Riku.

I'm pretty excited to hear this unexpected news! What other surprises do you think Kingdom Hearts 3D will hold, and what other characters would you like to see?

There aren't many things you can count on in this troubled world. One thing that remains consistent time and time again is a little webshow we like to call "Feedback." We like to call it that mainly because that's what it is called. Feedback is my constant. We have to go back!

This episode, the Feedback dream team is in the house to learn you something fierce. Adam "Syndicate" Sessler welcomes Blair "Crown of Thorns" Herter, Steve "The Bangles" Johnson, and Nikole "Third-Person" Zivalich.

This week, G4 is trying to get you a job in the gaming industry with G4 University. The panel discusses how they got their starts at G4.

...And now for something completely different: Let's talk about taxes! Actually, we decided to talk about ways video game companies can get out of paying their taxes. It's a jolly good discussion, and you may learn something. News was rounded out with a potential new segment: Nintend-Oh-No!, a chance for us to reflect on the weird choices Nintendo makes, like the Circle Pad.

We had two Games of the Week on this episode, Dead Island and Warhammer 40K: Space Marine. Both games fell short of being amazing titles, but for different reasons.

I know what you're thinking, "There's way too much content in this episode. I don't know if I can handle it!" Now little Timmy, (I assume you're all named Timmy) it's true there is more content in this episode than some may be able to fathom. But if the weak don't make it, so be it.

Feedback -- Dead Island & Warhammer 40K: Space Marine Impressions »

The AUDIO MP3 of this episode of FEEDBACK is available here: Right-click and Save.

If you're one of the elite, the chosen, the hardcore, who can handle an episode of this magnitude then I urge you to fight on and leave a comment.

That most erudite and learned of video game heroes, Professor Layton, is coming back on September 30, and will be bringing his most puzzling adventure yet when Professor Layton and the Last Specter comes out for the Nintendo DS.

"What does it look like?" you're probably asking. Well, all you need do is take a look at the video below for an answer to that important question. The video comes via the Tokyo Game Show!

Game design at Northeastern University

I’m going to start this article with a full disclosure – I am a faculty member at Northeastern University in Boston, with a couple of years of teaching interactive narrative and game design courses under my belt. Don’t scream “OMG Bias!” in panic, though – this is no vapid sales pitch. Instead, consider this a tour through the program, with a guide who just happens to know the ins and outs reasonably well.

G4U: Northeastern's Video Game Program

The Basics

Game Design is offered as a core curriculum in the master’s program at Northeastern’s College of Professional studies. The school offers a 12-month certificate program in Game Design and a Master’s of Professional Studies in Digital Media with a concentration in Game Design, if you want the specifics and wordy titles. What this means in plain English is that you can opt for the quicker certificate if you are simply looking to brush up on skills or learn an aspect of development that’s new to you, or you can go for the full degree program for the in-depth educational experience (encompassing core classes, specialty classes, and a thesis component) and the resume-sweetening power of a master’s degree. It’s up to you.

DSi XL

Nintendo has announced they will be offering a metallic rose colored DSi XL beginning on September 18. I'm not really sure why you would want the DSi XL since its suggested retail price is the same as the 3DS' price. If for some reason you do want a pink DSi XL: Soon child, soon.

Aliens: Infestation Arrives In The US On October 11

It would have been easy to overlook, given all the Borderlands 2 talk that was happening, but Gearbox Software boss Randy Pitchford confirmed a release date for the Nintendo DS game Aliens: Infestation at PAX over the weekend. October 11 in the US and a week and a half earlier in Europe, on September 30.

Aliens: Infestation is quite a bit different from the squad-based shooter that is Aliens: Colonial Marines, but it sounds like a good fit for the DS, combining a "Metroidvania" style of play and exploration with the Aliens license. The game was developed by WayForward Technologies, in partnership with Gearbox.
