Battleship Video Game Announced

A Battleship video game is coming, gamers, so prepare thyself! Developed by Double Helix Games for the Nintendo DS, 3DS, 360, PS3 and Wii, Battleship is inspired by the the well-known kids' game as well as the movie version of the well known kids' game. It is a "seek and find" adventure that is aimed as a stand-alone story from the motion picture. The idea is to provide a "blend of strategic naval command and first-person action gameplay."

“We’re geared up for an outrageous sea and land conflict with the all new Battleshipvideogame,” said David Oxford, Activision Publishing.  “Inspired by the film’s exciting action and stunning backdrop, the game is next-gen naval warfare that thrusts players into the middle of humanity’s last stand against an unfamiliar menace.”

I'm still puzzled about what exactly what the plot of the movie is going to be. Just the title for the movie doesn't make sense to me at all "Battleship"... really I saw a couple aircraft carriers in the trailer so they're going to call it Battleship?! The people who did the CG for Transformers who are supposedly doing it for this movie are probably just doing their thing and moving on while raking in what money they can from this failure.

When I first saw the trailer I honestly...

Battlefield 3

While Battlefield 3 didn't outsell its rival Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the game has done very, very well for parent company Electronic Arts. According to EA, Battlefield 3 sold over 10 million copies. That's not copies-shipped, either. That's copies sold.  Soccer simulation FIFA 2012 also topped 10 million in sales, and Madden NFL 2012 sold over 5 million copies.

The good news comes by way of EA's quarterly financial results. Overall, it's been a really good quarter for the company. They boast:

"We recorded our highest operating cash flow in 31 quarters and grew segment share in both Europe and North America," said Eric Brown, Chief Financial Officer. "Third quarter non-GAAP digital revenue grew 79% year-over year, and we achieved our goal of generating over $1 billion in non-GAAP digital revenue on a trailing-twelve-month basis."

That's another way of saying, "Cha-CHING."

Nintendo Reveals Nintendo Network

During an investor presentation held last night, Nintendo's Satoru Iwata gave the world a glimpse of what we can expect from the Wii U when it launches later this year. One of the most interesting pieces of news concerns Nintendo's online plans: The revelation of The Nintendo Network, Nintendo's online platform.

The Nintendo Network seems planned as a fully functional online hub, like the PSN and Xbox Live. It will allow "competitions and communication among users, as well as the sales of digital content." On the Wii U, you'll have personal user accounts, too.

If people are shocked about what nintendo is doing there idiots. Nintendo is famous for take huge innovation before any one else,(example: joysticks) then other companies use what nintendo did and make it better, no matter how you look at Wii U is a good thing for everyone. If it does well then great for nintendo, and sony and Microsoft because they can take it and make it better like the playstation move and kinect, If it does bad than they know to not try it, thats how video games word...

LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes Is Coming This Summer

We all knew that this would be official before long. Too much seemingly hard evidence has surfaced pointing to a second LEGO Batman game for it not to be a Thing. And Warner Interactive has now confirmed it. LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes is coming to a gaming platform near you this summer, a press release reveals. That means: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, Windows PC, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita. No WonderSwan though. Sorry all.

The DC Super Heroes subtitle means that you're seeing more than just familiar faces from TT Games' previous Batman release. Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and Lex Luthor are all confirmed. Who else would you like to see? I'm casting my vote now for the Wonder Twins.

Batman: Arkham City

All the awards shows and fan polls in the world can tell you one thing, but video game rental service GameFly offers what is perhaps one of the best barometers for what actual people were actually playing over the course of a given year. Today the company releases its top 10 GameQ lists for 2011, with the rankings based on how frequently each title appeared in users' "I want to rent this next" lineup.

The top-requested game across all platforms is WB Games' Batman: Arkham City, followed by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Dead Island in the two and three spots, respectively. Skyrim, G4's own Game of the Year, is ranked seventh, likely because anyone who wanted it recognized the timesink involved and just bought the thing. Arkham is also the top game on the Xbox 360 list, but it's number two on the PlayStation 3 list, behind Uncharted 3 (of course).

Hit the jump for the full platform-by-platform breakdown, also including GameQ rankings for the Wii, 3DS and DS platforms.

So I can see that Arkham City's obnoxious online pass for offline content really paid off for them.

(Disclaimer: I loved Arkham City and bought it new, but the whole Catwoman set-up is asinine.)

Kid Icarus Uprising Developers Testing Online Multiplayer

With the end of 2011 now clearly in sight, Nintendo is looking to get gamers set for its early 2012 releases. A morning press release runs through a variety of Wii 3DS, DS and eShop release dates and windows for both first- and third-party games, including hotly anticipated titles like Kid Icarus: Uprising.

Pit will reclaim his bow and arrow in Uprising on March 23, 2012, bringing yet another classic Nintendo character to the 3DS platform. Also confirmed is a February 7 release date and $19.99 price tag for the Circle Pad, the 3DS attachment that adds a second analog nub and additional shoulder buttons. It's confirmed to be compatible with both Metal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater (Q1 release) and Resident Evil: Revelations (2/7 release).

On the Wii side, Nintendo notably confirmed release dates for Rhythm Heaven Fever and Mario Party 9, for 2/13 and 3/11, respectively. Those are the highlights; you can see the full list over on Nintendo's website. Bear in mind that dates and titles both are subject to change.

Modern Warfare 3 Cover Art Revealed?

Unsurprisingly, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim topped the video game sales charts in November, according to the NPD analysis group. MW3, from Publisher Activision Blizzard, sold $775 million in its first five days on the market so it's not too surprising that they came in at the number one spot. Battlefield 3, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, and Just Dance 3 rounded out the top five.

According to the NPD Analysis group, “This November marks the best November on record for sales of new physical content.  November 2008 was previously the best November on record.” They went on to mention that, “In one month, Elder Scrolls 5:  Skyrim is just about half a million units shy of matching Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion in lifetime sales.  Its first month performance was a five-fold increase over Oblivion’s first month sales," and they attributed the high sales to "outstanding review scores" like the our own Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim review.

To check out the rest of November's Top 10 check after the break.

Chrono Trigger Receives An ESRB Rating For The Wii

Here's a friendly public service announcement for those among you who love awesome things. Chrono Trigger, which ranks among the MOST awesome things for gamers, is now available for download in the iOS App Store, for iPhone and iPod Touch.

It's the Nintendo DS version of the SNES classic, which means you get some bonus areas to plow through in addition to the main game. Square Enix is using its typical "arm and a leg" pricing for App Store releases, with a $9.99 price tag on Chrono. That said, if you've never before played this excellent game and you happen to have an iPhone or iPod Touch then you really ought to just go ahead and -- brace yourselves -- pull the trigger.

Nintendo head Shigeru Miyamoto said in an interview with Wired that he is interested in retiring from his current position and stepping into another role at Nintendo. Nintendo, on the other hand, says everything for old Shiggy will be staying pretty much the same. So who should you believe? As always, you should believe Adam Sessler.

In this special, collectors edition of Sessler's Soapbox, Adam discusses this whole "retirement" thing and the culture of Nintendo. Click it, won't you?

In statements made to G4tv.com, Wired magazine has defended its reporting of the “stepping down” of Nintendo visionary Shigeru Miyamoto, as presented in a recent interview.

The interview sent tremors through the gaming world and financial markets when Miyamoto said that he was retiring from his current position as head of Nintendo’s game design department and changing his role within the company in order to focus on creating smaller games than his most recent titles. Nintendo responded to the interview with a statement that seems to contradict Miyamoto’s words, saying, “Video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto's role at Nintendo is not changing.”

We spoke to Wired editor Chris Kohler who confirmed that Miyamoto’s statements were reported accurately. “Miyamoto’s comments as presented in our story are exactly what Miyamoto said, and presented with the full context of his remarks,” Kohler said. “We are absolutely standing by those statements as reported.”

So now they're blaming Nintendo's translator?

This is why I don't believe everything I read online at first.

And Wired don't forget, I would say you don't make news, more like Troll news to me. Afford a Japanese Translator and assume that your responsable for your mistake.

One last thing: Your argument is invalid.

We've been spoiled by the latest and greatest graphics, sound direction, and innovations in gaming. Don't get me wrong. I love seeing exactly where my bullet entered that poor sap's head and being able to see the exit wound. Who doesn't? I also love being fully immersed in some of the most gorgeous environments I've seen this side of Okami. But as many of you may already know, I've got it bad for the retro aesthetic. Maybe I was born with it. Maybe it's Maybelline. Either way, I know I appreciate any title that takes us back to the classics, the days of 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit art. The systems I grew up with. These games put their own unique modern spin on what otherwise resemble games from our childhood, and these five are some of the best examples that represent the essence of retro meeting today's generation of gaming.

Jamestown

Jamestown: Legend of the Lost Colony

This indie offering from Final Form Games is a surprisingly deep side-scrolling shooter with lush, colorful environments and plenty of spunk. Its 16-bit art style is of course the main reason for its inclusion in this list. Just look at it! The manic shooter presents an alternate steampunk history where Mars is actually a British colony, contested by the Martians and the Spanish. It's a little far-fetched, that's for sure, but that's definitely part of its charm. Its pixel-perfect 2D art and sweeping soundtrack work in harmony to ensure Jamestown remains firmly lodged in your memory as one of the best modern examples of retro gaming out there. And just think – this is all from an independent studio.
