Wii U's Online Service Won't Require A Subscription

TVii functionality won't be coming to the Wii U until December 2012, Nintendo confirms in a morning press release. The same goes for video on demand services like Netflix and Hulu, which the media alert notes will be supported by the new console "in the coming weeks."

The actual console arrives in stores this weekend, on November 18, 2012, in two models: the Basic package with 8GB of internal storage ($299.99) and the Deluxe package, which includes a 32GB hard drive, a copy of Nintendo Land, and a handful of other packed in extras ($349.99).

NintendoLand Overview: It's An HD Mario Party

If you're getting a WiiU, the first game you'll probably fire up is NintendoLand. Much like its predecessor Wii Sports, NintendoLand is the free game that is bundled the WiiU, Nintendo's late entry into the HD console marketplace. A collection of 12 mini-games, NintendoLand features a theme park shell to give some context to the smattering of activities Nintendo wants to use to introduce you to its newest family member.

The theme park concept is not a terrible idea. There are much worse ways to frame mini-games, I suppose, and you can run around the park with your Miis and unlock little prizes here and there. There's a little Master of Ceremonies named Monita who is your guide through the park and instructs you on how to play all of the games. She's cute. I especially like her little bow tie. That makes me think of an important point: NintendoLand looks great. The HD does wonders for the trademark Nintendo graphics.

One of the big question marks that continues to circle Nintendo's Wii U console concerns how online features work, and a newly released video is meant to set the record straight. Features such as the eShop, web browser, and MiiVerse social gaming network are discussed in detail as the clock ticks down toward the Wii U's November 18, 2012 release.

Much of the running time is spent looking at MiiVerse, offering information that fans have been asking for since the console was announced. The particulars of maintaining a network of friends still aren't clear, but a main thrust of MiiVerse appears to be its Twitter-like forums interface that allows people to post and share game-specific comments, complete with screenshots, hand doodles, and whatever else.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 touches down in stores today, giving fans their first chance to check out the game's theme song, which was co-composed by video game music vet Jack Wall and Nine Inch Nails bossman Trent Reznor. You can give it a listen yourself up top if you haven't had a chance to check it out inside the game yet (via Kotaku).

I'm thinking that those who appreciate Reznor's work as a musician will take to this new track immediately. The piano-heavy instrumental is overflowing with minor keys and big crescendos, and it feels very much like one of Reznor's quieter, more reflective Nine Inch Nails tracks. Even if the game isn't your thing, the music is well worth checking out.

Our First Achievements Ever

Microsoft used some form of dark magic to make gamers care about meaningless points earned via Achievements and Sony eventually followed suit with Trophies, but Nintendo is bucking that trend on the Wii U. Although the 3DS handheld offers very Cheevo-like Accomplishments, that feature won't be transferred over to the new console when it hits stores on November 18, 2012.

The news comes from 5th Cell co-founder and Scribblenauts Unlimited creative director Jeremiah Slaczka, who wrote on NeoGAF that "it is up to the developer to include [achievements] or not" (via GamesRadar). Slaczka went on to say that the upcoming Scribblenauts features its own cheevo-like challenges that earn you "Global Starite Shards." He also admits that Nintendo's gameplan could change in the future. Just don't expect to go hunting for Accomplishments at launch.

VIDEO PREVIEW: Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is in stores tomorrow, and Treyarch is letting fans know what sort of behavior won't be tolerated online. The developer posted the game's official rules of online conduct on its forums and -- surprise, surprise! -- you're going to get in trouble if you act like an asshat online.

Not only are the rules basically identical to what we've seen in previous Call of Duty games, they're also pretty much common sense to anyone who is capable of measuring such things. Don't be nasty to people, don't try to break the game for the purposes of cheating, don't use modded devices, and don't pirate the software.

The lone newcomer to the rules and regulations prohibits "offensive live streams or unauthorized live stream content," since live streaming is a feature of the new game. Again though, nothing unexpected.

Nintendo Wii U Release Date And Price Revealed

Like the 3DS launch earlier this year, Nintendo is coming to New York City to celebrate the release of the Wii U console with a midnight event at the Nintendo World Store. Nintendo of America's Reggie Fils-Aime will be there once again to hype waiting fans, preside over tchotchke giveaways, and ring up the first Wii U sale in the United States. Probably to this guy.

The event starts at 6pm on November 17, 2012 and runs until the new console is officially released at midnight, at which point those waiting in line will be able to purchase their Wii U on a first-come, first-served basis. Nintendo is also taking advantage of the positive press opp to do some good in the world, selling New York-themed T-shirts bearing Mario's image at the event, with all proceeds from those sales being donated to the American Red Cross in support of ongoing Superstorm Sandy relief efforts.

In the Wii U unboxing video below, Nintendo's Satoru Iwata presides over the greatest unboxing video in the history of the genre. Seriously, if they gave out academy awards for films about taking consumer products out of boxes, this one would sweep, for writing, sound design, best supporting actress in a comedy, and best picture.

Iwata adorable formality and the slick Nintendo product itself will do more than any advertising campaign could. Seriously. Check it out:

Mass Effect 3's Weapons Will Be Getting Help From DICE

Add one more title to the list of launch day games available for the Wii U: Mass Effect 3. BioWare's trilogy-capping action/RPG comes to Nintendo's newest console on November 18, 2012, the same day the hardware launches, the studio confirms.

For its Wii U premiere, Mass Effect 3 will pack in both the From Ashes and Extended Cut DLC as well as three previously released multiplayer packs: Rebellion, Resurgence, and Earth. Also included on the disc is an updated version of the Genesis comic, which allows players to catch up on the series and make choices from the first two games that then carry over into their ME3 playthrough.

The new Assassin's Creed 3 commercial is a bit blockier than the other offerings we've seen so far. Featuring a Team America vibe, the clip, which will show during Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, features a marionette version of assassin Connor Kenway facing off against a group of red coats, showing off "new weapons", "skills" and "enemies" you'll face in AC3.  Do you prefer the puppets or gameplay?
